6. “Bon Homme” son of Annah karsay (b. 1852) 7. “Way-ge-nar-wah-minish-tah-gos” (b. 1822) 8. “Sas Swaine” Poitras (b. 1823) Henry “Sus-swain” Chasseur Poitras was born in August of 1823, the son of Henry Poitras Sr. (b. 1794) and Marie George (b. 1807), the daughter of Frederick George and Josephte. Henry Jr. married Catherine Fagnant, the daughter of Jean Baptiste Fagnant and Josephte Monet dit Belhumeur in 1851 at St. Joseph. The couple had nine children. Henry, his wife and their nine children are shown as receiving Turtle Mountain Band annuities in 1868 onward. They also appear on the Turtle Mountain Band census counts. In 1893, they have three adopted daughters living with them; Philomene Ladeux(11); Marie Ladeux (6) and Deimi Anna Ladeux (3). Henry was a counselor for Chiefs Little Shell II and III. 9. “Kug-kay-dway-wash-kung” William Davis (b. 1823) William “Kug-kaydway-wash-kung” Davis (b. 1823) is listed on the 1850 Pembina census as a hunter as family #116. William is shown as age 26, his wife Marie Vallee as age 20 and their son William as age six. William was born at Red River, the son of Jean Baptiste Davis and Betsy Josette, La Saulteuse. Josephte was Josephte Mijakammikijikok (Mezhekamakuikok) who was first married to fur trader Alexandre Wilkie. Thus William Davis and Jean Baptiste Wilkie were halfbrothers. They moved to Pembina in the late1840s. He married Marie Enno Heneault, then Marie Vallée at Pembina in 1862. William was also a counsellor for chiefs Little Shell II and III. William was a signatory to Riel’s August 20, 1880 petition to Major General N.A. Miles requesting support for the Montana Half-Breeds. He and his brother Jean Baptiste Jr. were both members of the Turtle Mountain Band. He signed the 1878 Cypress Hills petition for a Metis Reserve. Their son Louis Davis (b. 1869) became one of the members of the Turtle Mountain Police in the early 1900s. William Davis was a noted leader of the buffalo hunt. 10. “Paydway-walsh-kum” Louis Lenoir son of “Muhkudaybodtees.” (1861-1943) Louis was born on June 11, 1861, the son of Jean Baptiste Lenoir and Marie Isaac, the daughter of Martin Isaac and Magdeleine Roy. Louis married Emelie Poitras, the daughter of Charles Poitras and Marie Breland. He was also known as “Pah-dway-we-dug.” The couple had nine children. Louis was a band counselor for Little Shell III. His father, Jean Baptiste Lenoir, received Metis Scrip under the 1873 “Old Crossing”Treaty with the Pembina and Red Lake Chippewa. Jean Baptiste was a captain of Little Shell’s soldiers and President of the Council of Chief Little Shell sometime before the reserve was formed in 1882. Jean Baptiste was the brother-in-law to Louis Godon Sr. 11. “Boin-ence” Jean Baptiste Davis (b. 1822) Jean Baptiste “Boin-ence” Davis was born in 1822 at St. Boniface, the son of Jean Baptiste Davis (b. 1877) and

Josephte (Saulteaux/Chippewa). Josephte was Josephte Mijakammikijikok (Mezhekamakuikok) who was first married to fur trader Alexandre Wilkie. Thus Jean Baptiste Davis and Jean Baptiste Wilkie were half-brothers. Jean Baptiste Davis married Julie Desnomme, the daughter of Pierre Desnomme sometime before 1838. This family appears in the 1850 Pembina census as family # 115. He was a counselor and Headman to Chief Little Shell. He signed the Augustin Brabant Metis petition from Lake Qu’Appelle, on 11 th September 1874. Baptiste Davis signed as a witness to Treaty Four at Qu’Appelle in 1876. He also signed the 1878 Cypress Hills petition for a Metis Reserve. 12. “Kar-yence” Joseph Delorme, a son of “Auguhk-quay” (b. 1838) Joseph “Karyence” Delorme was born in March 1838, the son of Joseph Aughuhk-quay” Delorme and Isabelle Gourneau. Isabelle was the daughter of Joseph Grenon and Angelique Folle-Avoine (Wild-Rice). Joseph Jr. married Angelique Gingras, the daughter of Metis Trader Antoine Gingras and Scholatique Trottier on May 20, 1864. The couple had twelve children. Joseph Sr. had been a counselor to Chiefs Little Shell II and III and Kar-yence in turn was a counselor to Chief Little Shell III. Joseph Aughuhk-quay Delorme Sr. received annuities and scrip (Half Breed Scrip # 218) under the 1863 Red Lake and Pembina Treaties of 1863. In 1868 he took annuities for himself, two women and six children under Little Shell’s Band and in 1867 took annuities for himself, one woman and six children under Wayke-ge-ke-zhick’s Band. Joseph Jr. received annuities and scrip (Half Breed Scrip # 239) under the 1863 Red Lake and Pembina Treaties of 1863. In 1868 ha took annuities for himself, one woman and two children under Way-ke-ge-ke-zhick’s Band. His wife is listed as Angeline Courchene aka Gingras. 13. “Sharlo” Charles Bottineau (b. 1824) Charles “Sharlo” Bottineau was the son of an Ojibway mother, Margaret Mah Je Gwoz Since or Ah-dik-Songab (Clear Sky), and a French-Canadian hunter father, Charles Joseph Bottineau. In 1787, Charles Joseph Bottineau came into the Northwest Territory Chippewa country with other French fur traders. Between 1803-1808, Charles Sr. was a voyageur and hunter with Alexander Henry in the Pembina area.“Sharlo” married Francoise Parenteau, the daughter of Pierre Parenteau and Josephte Laurent circa December 26, 1850 at St. Paul. They adopted an Indian child, Hyacinthe Villeneuve. Pierre Bottineau, the famous Metis guide and interpreter was Sharlo’s younger brother. “Sharlo” worked in a trading post partnership with Charles Grant at St.Joseph’s. “Sharlo” was a counselor to Chief Little Shell II and Little Shell III. 14. “Ossa-otit” Francois Desmarais (b. 1837-38) Francois was the son of Francois Demarais dit Demonay (b. 1800) and Margaret Denarrah. His father (b. 1810) was the son of Jean Baptiste Desmarais and Louise (Chippewa). His mother was the daughter of Joseph Rochon and Josephte Ducharme. Joseph married Adelaide Gesson dit Jannot, the couple had an adopted daughter Marguerite and a son Joseph born 1859 on the plains between Oak Lake and Turtle Mountain. Joseph and his wife were enumerated on reserve at Turtle Mountain in the band census of 1889. Joseph was a counselor for Chiefs Little Shell II and III. Counselor Alex Ahkee-win-nini Jannott is his brother-in-law. 19. “Bayriss” Corbet Grant (b. 1835) Charles “Bay-riss” Cuthbert Grant was born on December 28, 1835 at St. Francois Xavier, the son of Cuthbert Grant and Marie McGillis. He was the son of Cuthbert Grant of “Battle of Seven Oaks” fame and the founder of Grantown later St. Francois Xavier. Corbet married Marie Gingras, the daughter of trader Antoine Gingras and Scholatique Trottier on August 28, 1860 at St. Joseph’s. They had nine children. Marie (b. 1862)married Henri Poitras; Justine (b. 1865) married Joseph E. Marion; William (b. 1872)married Mary Petronile Monette; James (b. 1877) married Rosalie Monet; and Charles (b.1837) married Mary Vitaline Dumont. Boniface. Marie was the daughter of Thomas Gray from St. Regis Reservation and Marie Nippising dit Sawan. Antoine married Olivine Catherine Davis (18321920) in 1851. Catherine was born in St. Boniface in 1832, the daughter of Jean Baptiste Davis and Josephte (Chippewa). Josephte was Josephte Mijakammikijikok (Mezhekamakuikok) who was first married to fur trader Alexandre Wilkie. Catherine was the sister of Metis leader William “Kug-kaydway-wash-kung” Davis (b. 1823). Heneault was also a counselor for Chief Little Shell III. His sons Antoine Jr. and Alexandre were two of the Metis who were involved in the 1878 Cypress Hills Petition for a reserve in Canada. Antoine died on November 29, 1913. 21. “Jean Batees” Gorin (Champagne) (b. 1831) Jean Baptiste Champagne was born in February 1831 at Pembina, the son of Emmanuel Beaugrand dit Champagne and Marguerite Larocque. His older brother Emmanuel Jr. (b.1823) was a founder of the village of Batoche. Because Emmanuel participated as a member of Riel’s Council (Exovedate) at Batoche during the 1885 Resistance he was arrested on May 19, 1884 and on August 14, 1885 at Regina; he pled guilty and received a conditional discharge for his part in the 1885 Resistance. Jean Baptiste received Half Breed Scrip (#463) under the Red Lake and Pembina Band Treaty of 1863. Jean Baptiste first married Isabelle Parisien, the daughter of Jean Baptiste Parisien and Charlotte Nolin, on March 10, 1856 at Pembina. They had five children. Next he was married to Elize Laverdure, the daughter of Joseph Laverdure and Therese Villebrun in 1870. Elize and Jean Baptiste had nine children. Last, he married Madeleine Vallee in 1884. Jean Baptiste was a buffalo hunter and the family lived across the plains when not at Turtle Mountain they were at; Devils Lake, St. Francois Xavier, Lebret, Fort Qu’Appelle, Wood Mountain and Cypress Hills.
