 Recertification

Continuing education requirements
The continuing education that building officials are required to obtain is important to your future. In December 2005, two Certified Building Officials lost their certifications for failing to submit their continuing education or for failing the examination after their certification expired. Each person certified as a Building Official in the State of Minnesota is responsible to obtain continuing education through any of the programs approved under Minnesota Rules 1301.1000 and submit an application for renewal as required by Minnesota Statutes 16B.65 subd. 7. This statute also requires that “each application for renewal must be accompanied by proof of satisfactory completion of minimum continuing education requirements and the certification renewal fee established by the commissioner.” As a courtesy, Building Codes and Standards sends a renewal notice to each certified person about 120 days before expiration. However, each person is responsible for timely submission of their application regardless of the renewal notice. You can make your application for renewal easier by placing all of your certificates for continuing education in a file so you can make copies of them to submit with your application. Please make sure that all the information you include on your application is accurate, if not, your application may be returned. To avoid delays, please double check you have including: • copies of all certificates for training recorded. • a signed Continuing Education Summary Report. • the $20 application fee. • the proper amount of postage on the envelope. • notifying Building Codes and Standards about address changes.
