October 6, 2013 Final Course Leg Descriptions To see these maps in more detail, please visit hopkintonrelay.com and click on the links.
Leg 1 & Leg 4 (Moderate/Difficult some rolling hills, portion of route on dirt trails) A great leg for those looking for some varied terrain this is also the longest leg of the race. You start your run exiting the YMCA property through a wooded trail, then head north on Clinton Street. After proceeding straight through the 4-way stop (course marshals will direct you to move to the right and run with traffic, as there is a sharp blind curve right after the stop sign that you need to avoid). Run straight on Clinton Street (on the right side of the road, running with the traffic). At the end of Clinton Street you will be directed to take a right on to Rt. 135. For you Boston Marathon runners, this should look pretty familiar its the one-mile point of the marathon. A police detail will direct you across Main Street (Rt 135), you will head up Cross St and cross at Frankland Road., After a trio of left turns (about of a mile apart from each other, give or take), you will find yourself at the foot of Hopkinton State Park. Just look for the friendly course marshals to steer you to transition area and your smiling teammates. 4.6 Miles
Leg 2 & Leg 5 (Difficult - the dam leg) If youre the owner of this leg, you get some bragging rights. The leg starts innocently enough with a short flat section as you leave the transition area and run down Dogwood St. You take a left and cross the dam. You take a right on to Wilson Street and before long, youll find yourself on a typical Hopkinton incline that probably doesnt end as quickly as you might want. Of course, what goes up must come down and after a flat stretch, youll encounter a nice downhill and then some rolling hills. But your next challenge awaits at the end of the road, as you turn right to run the first quarter mile of the Boston Marathon course in reverse. If youve ever toed the line on Patriots Day, you know that first segment as a crowded but effortless downhill but today, you get to experience it from a reverse angle. Best advice - just look straight ahead, keep your eye on the doughboy statue (The World War I Memorial statue that proudly stands guard over the Town's center), and crank up that hill. You will run with traffic on 135 and cross at Hayden Rowe. You then follow Hayden Rowe to the High School. 4.0 Miles
Leg 3 & Leg 6 (Easy/Moderate rolling hills, but more down than up, short trail section near end) This leg takes the relay to East Hopkinton, providing the courses first real taste of the towns gorgeous treecovered running routes. After leaving the transition area, the course crosses Hayden Rowe and proceeds north to Pike Street. Pike hits the infamous Ash Street hill that many a local runner has taken the long way around to avoid. Fortunately, though, you get to run DOWN the hill rather than UP. The first downhill is followed by a slight uphill and flat section, and then by another descent. From the bottom of the second hill, its a left turn, and then a mile-long straightaway. While not a major thoroughfare, this is a moderately busy road. PLEASE STAY TO THE LEFT SIDE OF THE ROAD, RUN FACING TRAFFIC, AND EXERCISE CAUTION. After coming to a 4-way stop, you will turn right on Clinton Street, which you will follow for about a mile before keeping left on East Street and finishing at the YMCA.
