2Day!

KEEPING THE COMMITMENT

Todays Safety Thought

What should you do if you are involved in a minor motor vehicle collision on a state freeway or highway? Keep safety first - move vehicles to the side of the road and out of the way of oncoming traffic. If the vehicle cant be moved, call 911. Make sure to turn on hazard lights and set out warning lights, flares of hazard triangles if possible. Exchange information (at a safe location off the roadway): Name, address, phone number, insurance company, policy number, drivers license number and license plate number for the driver and owner of each vehicle.

Visual transformation
For years the long-d istance signature of UMCDF was the towering red iron of the PAS, which was visible from miles away. After the fell ing of the last section of the PAS last Wednesday, the site looks very d ifferent - and much smaller. Of course, the MDB is also shrinking, rather quickly. These views were snapped Thursday northwest (above) and northeast (left) of the plant.

Final EVMS surveillances completed

eres another sign of closure progress UMCDF has completed its final Earned Value Management System (EVMS) surveillances. The surveillances have occurred regularly since the project got started. The EVMS process looked at schedule control, budget control and risk minimization. It also provided a communication forum between the URS team, the Field Office and stakeholders. At this point in the closure process, the EVMS process has served its purpose. The Project Controls team under Toni Harrington and Rosemary Anderson on the FO side oversaw the EVMS surveillances.

Plant Status Recap

A total of 39 truck loads of demolition waste were shipped to the Arlington landfill on Thursday and Friday. Removed the MPF afterburner. Continued removing the remainder of the DUN, MER, and the NW part of the UPA and UMC. Continued knocking out concrete panels at the BSA and second floor observation corridor. Continued size reduction of materials at the north end of the PAS structure. Continued removing concrete pads from the PAS and concrete from the air receiver footers.

Rapid progress
ABOVE, The MPB is mostly gone, with only the l ifts remaining this morning as the sun filters through the exposed BSA on the ground floor. To the right of the MPB l ifts, the MPF afterburner was removed Friday. RIGHT, The last remnants of the PAS blocked the view of the east wall of the MDB last Thursday. BELOW, Demol ition work has exposed considerable rebar to the right of the ECR-B door.

Across the Sites

Anniston: Continued demolition of PFS cooler (filter house/support steel). Continued removal of "nonstructural" MDB exterior items. Continued air tank removal. Continued scrap segregation and hauling. Removed the contents of buildings and emptied property from the lay-down yard. The SDC remains down; however, the goal is to resume SDC processing by 4 October. Tooele: Maintained the plant in preparation for Section-2 HVAC duct head space monitoring, which is planned for Monday. Only two stations out of the 42 require re-sampling via Section-2 testing (due to a sampling flow concern and out-of-control QP recoveries). Performed HVAC Exhaust Duct heat-up procedures for continued duct testing on Monday. Began draining process water from the PAS. Set up potable water hoses and began flushing and draining the NAH tanks and piping. Isolated and removed monitors from the plants CCTV system.

Keep non-food items like pens and fingers out of your mouth. Avoid eating food that has been exposed where people are coughing or sneezing. Consider getting a flu vaccination each year. Avoid crowds or overcrowded areas during periods of epidemic illness. Allow fresh air to enter homes or offices routinely. Open curtains or blinds for at least 20-30 minutes daily sunlight helps purify indoor air. Use throw-away facial tissues. Get 7-8 hours of sleep nightly to keep your immune system strong. Drink 6-8 glasses of water per day, even if in a sedentary job. Increase when performing physical or heat stressful work. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables (fresh if possible), whole grains, and a handful of nuts each day (particularly almonds and walnuts).

UMCDF 2Day!

Useless Fact of the Day The combination of chile peppers and oregano for seasoning has been traced to the ancient Aztecs, but the current blend is said to be the invention of early Texans. Chili powder is typically a blend of dried chiles, garlic powder, red peppers, oregano, and cumin.
