Review on Taiwan’s LED Industry in 2008
By Angel Chiou

nfluenced by the global economic turmoil, players of LED industry are forced to face the dramatic drop of revenue in Q4. Upstream companies were struggling to keep revenue as the same level as that of the previous year, while downstream players would be considered well-done to grow 10%.

The Capricious Market in 2008
Giving a review to the year 2008, the worldwide financial crisis has offset the fast growth rate of the first half year, slowing down

the market development in the photonic industry, representing a growth rate at 6% at USD 367.4 billion. PIDA’s analysts expect a negative growth rate at -3% in 2009. The revenue of Taiwan’s photonics industry in 2008 reached NTD 2010 billion (about USD 64 billion) with a negative growth rate at -4%, but occupied 18% of the global market. It is estimated that the financial crisis would offset the growth rate of certain industries in 2008 and 2009. Not until 2010 would the revenue rise again to the revenue same in 2007.

In such a depressing situation, some Taiwan’s products are still top three in a global ranking in terms of the Share, including LED chips, LED packaging, TFT-LCD materials & components, TFT-LCD panels, digital camera OEM, optical disk drive, optical glass, photovoltaic cell and module. Taiwan’s PV industry as a whole tops No. four worldwide behind Germany, Japan, and China, remaining potential for further growing since it only occupies 9% market in the world. The revenue of Taiwan’s crystalline silicon solar cell and module in 2008, however, has a occupation rate up to 24%, becoming the top three worldwide at first time.

Accent Lighting and Display Backlight Led LED to a Broader Application
Influenced by the economic depression, the scale of Taiwan’s LED epitaxy & packaging industry only reached NTD 82 billion to keep the same level as in 2007, falling short of expectation to reach NTD 100 billion. The revenue of LED epitaxy industry in 2008 slightly shrunk to NTD 32 billion, showing a recession at -4% in comparison of the previous year. The LED packaging industry, on the other hand, remained a slow growth rate at 3% to reach NTD 50 billion.

Comparing with the growth rate over 20% in the past two years, that of 2008 is depressing for companies in the industry. The four major markets of LED application are signal lighting, indicating lighting of electronic products, cell phone backlight, and automotive lighting, last two of which were particularly impacted by the economic turmoil of this time. However, other than the stagnancy in the traditional LED lighting markets, there are chances for LED lighting in new application. For example, LED lighting has comprised middlesized LCD backlighting of netbooks and attempts to into the LCD backlight market of a larger size. Most NB brand companies has given a clear indication to utilize more LED backlighting for large-sized LCD, which is estimated to increase the penetration rate to over 35%. In addition, monitor manufacturers are also showing their interest in applying new backlight source in order to add more value to their products, which would be in favor of LED industry players. Regarding TV backlight application, although there are still unsolved technical problems, the LED application in this area is expanding due to some Korea firms’ strong intention to apply LED into high-level products.

Indoor/ Outdoor Lighting

In the upcoming 3 to 5 years, accent lighting is believed to be an important start for LED to enter the interior lighting market. Since the European Union begins to ban incandescent bulbs in 2009 and the environmental consciousness increases, it is a good chance for LED to penetrate in the lighting market. It is estimated that the penetration rate of LED lighting might reach 1.5% with total revenue of USD 1 billion. In outdoor lighting, because of the government’s

policy to promote green energy, demands from the street light market is predicted to grow and hopefully to reach one million lamps. Therefore, LED application as a whole might slightly grow with luck in 2009. Although the price of LED lighting is still relatively high in comparison to that of the traditional fluorescent variety, its potential in the market and possibility in application still make LED a big drive for Taiwan’s photonic industry.

Brighter Roadway Ahead -

Taiwan LED Alliance Addresses Lighting Standards
Taiwan among the first to establish a complete set of LED lighting measurement standards
By Dan Guo

yeing the huge potential of LED lighting market and encouraging Photonics industry development in Taiwan with the “Green Industries” ideology, Taiwan Government has put lots of effort in promoting LED Lighting technology and creating national standards for LED roadway lighting. In doing so, the Ministry of Economic Affairs has taken several actions to put together strengths from the manufacturers, academia, research institutes and industry associations to jointly improve the competitiveness of Taiwan’s LED lighting industry. In 2007, MOEA announced it will spend NT$ 2 billion (US$ 60.6 million) in the next four years to help develop the LED industry in Taiwan and expect the industry to reach a value of NT$ 540 billion by 2015. Through ambitious investments and industry development plans, the government wishes to push Taiwan’s global market share of LED industry from up to 14 percent in 2010 to 23 percent by 2015, generating a production value of NT$ 540 billion in 2015. The government-financed four-year “Houyi” plan began from 2007 and aimed to develop highpower white-light LED lamps that give off 100-120 lumens per watt while keeping the cost below US$ 5 per 1,000 lumens. The core technology is based on ultraviolet chips that use red, green, and blue

phosphor powders. Leaving the patent issue aside, white light from UV chips delivers much better chromaticity quality than the light emitted from blue chips. Houyi was a mythical Chinese hero who shot down nine of the ten suns that were scorching China in ancient times. It is believed that LEDs will eventually replace most existing light sources, just like Houyi brought down those nine suns.

Taiwan LED Alliance Addresses Lighting Standards
LED standards contribute one of the key factors for Taiwan LED lighting products to be competitive on the international stage. Hence, on the regulation front, a group of LED manufacturers, which includes Optotek, China Electric Manufacturing, Epistar, I-Chiun Precision Industry, Lite-On Technology, Lustrous Technology and Wei Min Industrial, has teamed up to establish the “LED Light Standard and Quality R&D Alliance.” The group aims to develop the first complete LED lighting measurement standard in Taiwan. The alliance plans to develop LED T-bar indoor lamps with 100 lm/W light efficiency and 20,000-hour expected lifetime, LED headlights and LED street lamps, along with quality testing and verification technologies.

For the first stage, this alliance is going to integrate LED lighting industry and the technology industry and to develop the first comprehensive set of LED lighting measurement standards. Presently, the alliance has published, under the guidance of Department of Industrial Technology of MOEA, the drafts of “Fixtures of roadway lighting with light emitting diode lamps”, “Normal aging test for light emitting diode component and module”, “Measurement of thermal resistance for light emitting diode”, “Measurement of optical and electrical for light emitting diode component”, “Measurement of optical and electrical for light emitting diode module”, and “LED modules for general lighting Safety specifications” for solicitation of comments for drafts of national standards. These manufacturers already have much experience on LED integration, packaging and module power supply and lighting products, and other related technical research and development. Therefore, as stated by the MOEA, the key factor for Taiwan LED lighting products to be competitive on the international stage is to establish worldclass LED standards for testing and verification, therefore, when the United States and Japan are

drafting LED industry standards in an attempt to dictate the product specifications, Taiwan government also actively assists in the development of LED lighting industry standards for the domestic industry to establish standardized LED products and helps the industry to provide high reliability of the LED products. In view of the hot applications of LED lighting in recent years, with the support of the Industrial Technology Research Institute, the LED Light Standard and Quality R&D Alliance will combine the institute’s standard-setting experience, the development of domestic LED lighting standards and regulations. In the future, the establish standards will enable domestic LED epi-wafer, packaging and lighting and other technical standards to help manufacturers provide products with top quality. In recent years, other countries such as China, Russia and Korea and other countries also have inputs on the standards related to LED; therefore, it is vital for the LED Light Standard and Quality R&D Alliance to promote and to build Taiwan’s first complete set of LED lighting standard so as to rapidly improve Taiwan’s LED industry’s international competitiveness.

The “Green Industry”
Besides, the push into the LED sector reflects the Ministry of Economic Affairs’ plan to target “green industries,” or those industries that are environmentally friendly. Light-emitting diodes are low-energy consumption light sources. Lower energy requirements help cut dependence on environmentally harmful fossil fuels. This “green industry” goal is outlined in the “Economic Development Vision for 2015” government economic plan. Under this plan, Taiwan government hopes to create a complete industrial chain for the LED industry, ranging from upstream wafer/ chip, midstream LED lighting modules, to downstream lamps. In Taiwan, LED lighting is a major part of energy-conservation efforts and the encouragement of energy-efficient lighting is a national policy. This year, the Bureau of Energy of the Ministry of Economic Affairs implements a roadway lighting demonstration project that sees LED lighting installed on three or four roads. In line with the implementation of this project, the government has asked the Energy and Environment Research Laboratories of the government-backed Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) to draft LED roadway lighting standards and set up an inspection lab. Department of Industrial Technology under

the Ministry of Economic Affairs has finished the installation of LED streetlight demonstration, selecting 228 Memorial Park and surrounding roads to replace the 52 original 250-watt mercury lamps for the 125-watt LED. LED street lamps installed by the Industrial Technology Research Institute specifications counseling firms produced by its brightness, illumination and standards are in compliance with the provisions. Estimated energy efficiency will be as high as 52 percent. In 2009 the Taipei City Government has selected several demonstration areas to replace traditional street lamps with LED street lamps and is scheduled to set up one after another, where Da-an Forest Park, Zhongshan Park are to set up solar panels generating system as well with a project cost of NT$ 1.25 million spent in 2010. In addition, to spur domestic consumption, the government will promote LED lighting samples to the general public, and will change laws to encourage consumers to replace standard lights with LED lights. Finally, the government will establish an international-standard testing and validation platform to assist the industrialization of the industry.

TOSIA to promote LED development in Taiwan

In March 2007, fourteen LED packagers and LED chip makers and the government-sponsored Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) formed the Taiwan Optoelectronic Semiconductor Industry Association (TOSIA). The association highlights the goal of helping foster the development of the island’s LED lighting and LED display industries by developing efficient highpower LED devices. For Taiwan’s lighting manufacturers, the TOSIA is set to bridge the gap between them and the LED manufacturers. The 14 manufacturers are Epistar Corp., Unity Opto Technology Co., Ltd., Opto Tech Corp., Everlight Electronics Co., Ltd., Tyntek Fig.2 LED streetlight demonstration in 228 Memorial Park Courtesy : PIDA Corp., Para Light Electronics Co., Ltd.,

Government Projects Trigger LED Business

n order to reflect the industry’s need to commercialize light-emitting-diode (LED), as well as to put into effect the Energy-Saving and Carbon-Reduction Action Plan, both central and local governments collaborated with a number of industry players announcing in late December last year to set up three exclusive demonstration

areas as to make clear to all on the determination to nurture the industry. The three demonstration areas, located in Taipei city, include 228 Memorial Park, Fuzhou Street, and Nanyiang Street and its neighborhood. In 228 Memorial Park, LED lighting landscape and garden control system PIDA & accessories were adopted to showcase the impressive grand sight down at Kaidagelan Boulevard. Around Fuzhou Street, LED outdoor street bulbs were used to light up the roadway. In the neighborhood of Nanyiang Street and allies around, LED lighting fixtures were designed to beam down on the paving. According to Chii-Ming Yiin, Taiwan’s Minister of Economic Affairs, with years of subsidization from the government as well as advanced technology improvement from the business end, the longanticipated third revolution in lighting field has

arrived. Minister Yiin further noticed that Taiwan’s LED quantity of output tops number one in the world by volume, which is a prop to fuel the industry growth starting 2009 and beyond. What the government can contribute to the development is to draw up a well-arranged plan which includes national standards, enactment of regulations, innovation awards programs, and etc, so the players will never have to be overcautious of disturbance in the rear. In addition, according to Taipei City Government, one of the cities on the island that invest a great deal of money and effort in driving the environmental protection activities, the exclusive demonstration areas play a role of catalyst to call for more effective follow-up to commitments to energy-saving. Mayor Longbing Hao addressed that the global warming is getting worse to cause damage all over the world, which prompts a general awareness for global governments to work out measures to reduce Greenhouse gas (GHG), and

Taipei included. Mayor Hao illustrated the city’s long-term goal by relating several ongoing projects with major industry players. Among all the other projects, LED street light replacement prioritizes. Mayor Hao explained that the government agency in charge is proceeding with 20 major LED players in the supply chain to collect relevant data, hold a succession of seminars to update information and exchange opinions, and forge ahead through the unclear situation. In Mayor Hao’s expectation, more than 140 thousand street incandescent lamps in Taipei city will soon be replaced with power-saving LED-based bulbs. From the above, it is obvious to tell that the newly developed “green gold” technology is on the rapid rise, which is an upward trend for high-tech companies to compete with each other on a new front, as well as a common goal for the worldwide governments to put in more extensive efforts while

they are seeking alternative energy as replacement or a subsidiary role, not only because the commodity price pushed high crazily but also the record-high crude oil price aroused public attention to the knotty problem last year. According to LEDinside, an independent LED industry research institute based in Taiwan, the nation’s streetlight market indicates a potential business opportunity valued at around NT $4050 billion for local LED firms as the government’s determination to spend NT $200-300 million to install LED streetlights on the part of some areas in 2009 for the use of the new light source in streetlight. The research firm further predicted that Taiwan LED firms that specialized in packaging, including Unity Opto Technology Co., Ltd, Bright LED Electronics Corp., and Foxsemicon Integrated Technology Inc., will benefit from the plan. However, given a wide-ranged implementation project that aimed to carry out on time, collaboration

across the industry is the correct path to go. Epistar Corporation, located in the central city of Hsinchu developing and manufacturing high brightness LED products by applying its own proprietary Metal Organic Vapor Phase Epitaxy (MOVPE) technology, and Formosa Epitaxy Incorporation, a Taoyuan-based manufacturer of InGaN LED wafer and chip offering InGaN Blue, Green, and near-UV LED products, were allegedly to participate in the project in terms of LED chip providers. On the packaging side, players that join the project include Lite-On Technology Corp., an LED industry veteran who is the foremost supplier building fully integrated supply chain of LEDs among Taiwanese high-tech heavyweights, along with Alliance Optotek Corporation, a solid state lighting solution provider for lighting industries; China Electric Mfg. Corporation, an own-branded lighting company supplying a full range of products including LED and solar energy lighting system;

Lustrous Technology Ltd, a leading COB packaging technology in the industry, and etc. Aside from these market players who are itching for a try to play a big role in the project, several forces have achieved their original dominance by stealth. For example, Delta Electronics Inc., originally an electronic components and products manufacturer to OEM/ ODM customers and distributors, has gradually shifted its role toward an efficient energy solutions provider by developing solid-state lighting products. In mid January, the company announced that it has completed the development of a full line of advanced energysaving LED lighting products that cover functional as well as indoor and outdoor applications. Although LED lighting now represents only a minor 3% of global lighting market with LED

streetlights taking up an even smaller portion, according to an estimate made by a market research firm, the new bright spot lies in Mainland China, where will become one of the major battle grounds for Taiwan LED lighting makers because the country will highly likely follow Taiwan’s industry standards for LED lighting to draft up its own. In a report, global demand for electric lighting is forecasted to reach US $40 billion in 2012 on annual gains of more than seven percent. Also, the emerging economies of China, India and Russia are expected to be the three fastest growing markets for electric lighting products, in particular China, whose demand for electric lighting upsurges the highest through 2012. Based on the projection, whenever the China local governments take action to launch installation, Taiwanese players will get ready to fight. Nevertheless, with more and more high-tech companies weigh in the LED market to vie for a piece of the pie, there are some dubious voices of a payoff that will come up that soon. A senior manager that didn’t want to be named of Kingbright Elec. Co. Ltd., an LED wafer and chip supplier since founded in 1980, said the tough economy may lag the demand for LED lighting products to penetrate the market starting this year given that they are it is at least ten times expensive than conventional bulbs that are available anytime and anywhere. Besides, fragmented regulations and inadequate luminous efficiency are also major obstacles that handicap the industry to take off.

Among all kinds of lamps, LED lamp is relatively more technologically advanced and environmentally friendly. LED has low working voltage, low energy consumption, high lightemitting efficiency and a long lifespan. LED lamp is now a shiny star in the lighting industry. The usual lifespan of an incandescence lamp is 1000 to 2000 hours, while theoretically that of a LED lamp is 100,000 hours. Moreover, compared

with an incandescence lamp, a LED lamp can save up to 80 percent of the electricity consumed, and compared with a fluorescence lamp, 50 percent. Besides, LEDs can be fitted into different types of lighting fixtures (lamps), creating wide range of applications. When the era of white light illumination comes, the whole industry will enter the phase of rapid development.

The Taiwan government has drafted an energysaving strategy that will totally eliminate the use of incandescent lamps and phase in LED light bulbs by 2012. The government was planning to implement a policy that would prohibit the production of incandescent light bulbs from 2010. By 2012, output would be stopped altogether. Considering that general illumination in Taiwan consumes 26 billion kilowatt-hours per year, once

LED lamps are adopted there will be a saving of up to 41 percent on on current energy consumption. Taiwan government agencies have already begun to phase out the use of incandescent lamps and their use will be entirely forbidden from 2009 in government institutions. The government is also planning to change all traffic lights to LED, requiring a total budget of NT$ 1 billion to NT$2 billion.

LEDs Light Up the World

The Merchandise Mart

Chicago, November 12-14, 2008

There’s a lot of buzz today about solid-state/LED lighting, but what is its role as it relates to architects, lighting designers, business owners or utilities and municipalities? Based on the considerable vendors who exhibited SSL products at this past LightFair—including a number of quality interior white light fixtures—it may only be a matter of time before LEDs replace conventional incandescent and even fluorescent lighting. But in the interim, it’s safe to say it’s difficult for the average energy efficiency program manager, commercial customer or municipal lighting engineer to gauge what is hype and what is real.

For the first time, you will have the chance, for yourself, to evaluate the pros and cons of this revolutionary and truly disruptive technology by not only hearing about actual applications, but having the opportunity to ask lighting designers and developers specific questions, as well as listen, and be heard, on a variety of successful LED lighting projects that will help meet important environmental goals. Date: November 12-14, 2008.

e make every effort to fix our price at the lowest of all so as to top the all-time highest position among our competitors,” said forthright Randy Cheng, the Taipei Branch Office General Manager of the world’s largest LED-based bulb maker, in an exclusive interview toward the question how the company can make it within just few years. This is as sure as fate when the words that came out of the mouth of one of the C-class executives of the behemoth Neo-Neon Holdings Ltd., a Hong Kong-listed company with a manufacturing base in the south province of Guangdong in China. The giant in the bulb industry has swept most of their rivals away by consistently lowering down cost, one of the most lethal weapons, to earn more orders and customers. According to the company, the production campus they built is roughly 600 thousand square

meters, equivalent to more than 80 standard soccer stadiums, which is well equipped to produce 6 billion bulbs per year. The number is an astonishing quantity of output that accounts for more than half of the worldwide volume. Like most of manufactures located in China, the company recruits more than 20 thousand employees work around the clock to get it done on time to support the objective. Founded in 1979, the originally conventional decorative lighting company has proven to successfully reword a story that a traditional incandescent lamp maker could dish up an old manufacturing-based commercial business in a new form in terms of a compact fluorescent lights (CFL) bulb provider by throwing itself into a brand new research and development phase that it hardly dealt with before. “It was a hard time for all of us in the initial stage, when we were all outsiders to

the high-tech industry with a mind filled up with passion and hopes while none of us knowing slightly how to start with it,” recalled Mr. Cheng. Indeed, it is always a difficult decision for a company to transform itself into whether an R&Dfocused, a commercialoriented or a high-techFig.2 Neo-Neon’s LED street lamp enabled one because the Courtesy : PIDA risk of chaos and panic rule might represent a big threat to shipwreck the company during the transition. However, Neo-Neon made it through by settling a vertical integration along the whole supply chain, from component manufacturing, product design, LED packaging, cutting to moduling. Mr. Cheng placed Fig.3 Neo-Neon’s LED street lamp Courtesy : PIDA emphasis on the point that only through taking complete care of everything can the company learn how to cope with technical problems, materials procurement, as well as lead-time for molding and mass production, etc. Wi t h s e v e r a l y e a r s o f e x p e r i e n c e s i n experimenting and finally mastering the process from upstream, R&D and design for example, to downstream, manufacture and distributing for instance, Neo-Neon gradually created a kingdom of bulb products, which includes LED-based decorative lighting, entertainment lighting and illumination lighting products, offering more than 10 thousand models of lighting products to retail customers and commercial customers in over 80 countries globally. Given an all-round know-how in hand, it was high time for Neo-Neon to grow in strength and to make a raid in the high-tech territory. “We’ve lived up to the true growth represented by organic growth for the core of the company,” said Mr.

Cheng, noting that organic growth indicates how well the management team uses the company’s internal resources to expand profits and margins, as well as to improve the business. The outstanding effect to leverage internal resources therefore played a key role to reflect a substantial effect on the company’s bottom line as the profit jumped. It turned out Neo-Neon has taken out more and more market share loots from competitors within just few years by constantly reducing production cost while enhancing quality to meet customers’ needs. Mr. Cheng said Neo-Neon always aims to trim cost by 20% to 30% every year given that it is dominant in the market, which empowers itself to bargain over the prices with both material suppliers and customers so as to uphold average selling price (ASP) not to decline extraordinarily. According to a local newspaper, Neo-Neon has wiped out up to several thousands of small rivals since launching its full-covered LED-based bulb products, which is “overbearing” as it is usually stated. Facing accusations raised by industry players, Mr. Cheng demonstrated calm and composed because he knows, at the end of the day, what the company is doing is to make more money instead of doing good works. In fact, the expansive executive with a sense of heroic spirit defied that Neo-Neon has every right to act outrageously arrogant. “Our customers were so stunned by the super efficiency we showed them as they usually walked in the factory in the morning with a request and walked out in the evening to catch his flight with the molded sample he wanted at hand,” said Mr. Cheng. For this reason, as huge and efficient that cannot be shaken as Neo-Neon is, the company has its one-of-a-kind philosophy of business. Rather than always being at customers’ beck and call, NeoNeon takes initiative to “take the lead” to get ahead of its customers, which in other words, it commands and customers follow. Mr. Chen cited Ben Fan, Chairman of Neo- Neon, to claim firm on the company’s stance toward doing business with customers. “We know what we can do and how far we can go to serve customers, so we will just tell them ‘you buy or you die’ if they try to pin us

down,” said Mr. Cheng, with confidence in himself. The other immensely powerful weapon that Neo-Neon is highly skilled in edging its competitors toward a cul-de-sac with no way out is the formidable patent network which contains more than 350 patents issued by major countries in the world. The patent network was set up as a result of the strategy debate to pinch off competitors from stealing lucrative invention on an array of products. Neo-Neon is allegedly to come up with an invention every two days, which is not only a method to protect itself but also a strong assault to hammer whoever to compete with the company. Mr. Cheng had no scruples to say the patent network, established by a team of more than 300 engineers based in the manufacturing site, has brought Neo-Neon a great deal of beneficial return over the years. “Every year half of the profit was

generated by new products with impregnable patent to protect them,” said Mr. Cheng, adding that the stronger the patent network is, the more innovative the company can be to outstand in the industry. According to a report released late last year, China’s pan Zhujiang River Triangle Area might start decaying in the coming years due to a weak global demand on almost everything, with roughly one of every ten plants to shut down because no orders from customers. Located in the center of this area, Mr. Cheng has an ambitious goal to drive the company to gain a 5 to 10% growth for 2009. “While the industry reshuffle is about sifting the wheat from the chaff, chances are high for NeoNeon to cement a closer relationship with existing customers and intake new prospects by cutting down more cost and save them more bucks,” said Mr. Cheng.

ED as a future lighting source will be taking off in 2009, and we are likely to play a critical role in the market,” said Shine Lee, a sales manager of Lumenlux Lighting Corp., a professional light-emitting-diode (LED) distributor based in the north city of Taoyuan in Taiwan. Lumenlux was established in January 2006 by its parent company Lumitech Opto Technologies, a Taiwanese distributor engaged in research and development of materials, manufacturing, installation, sale and construction of the LED products that include the LED solid lighting, semiconductor lighting series products through combining solar with LED opto-electrical technology. To cover the industry across the whole spectrum, thus Lumenlux came into being for the Fig.1 Sales Manager of Lumenlux, Mr. Shine Lee purpose of the system integration for Courtesy : PIDA customers. Mr. Lee said both sides cooperate deeply in reflected by the recruitment of a total employee many aspects, such as resource sharing, technology number of less than 20 as of 2008, it has completed research and development and marketing. “We will a couple of outstanding projects over the past two strive together for our companies’ more prosperous years. in three major light source products from LED orders light source, LED decorative light source, to LED display screen. Mr. Lee noted that LED light source is suitable for high-speed fluorescence imaging as well as for a wide range of experiments using various fluorescence probes. Given that characteristic, LED light source is commonly adopted to carry out synchronously several colors to change gradually, or even to form a variety of pictures in an amusement park, large advertisement card, act wall, square street, stage bar, and etc. As for the decorative light source, it only

caught on for use as Christmas lights although LED has been around for a long time. Mr. Lee said one reason is that older LED originally came in only red, and the other problem was a lack of brightness of LED. However, Lumenlux solved the problems successfully and today LED Christmas lights are easily found in all kinds of shapes and sizes. They can blink just like the regular incandescent varieties and come in a wide range of colors. When it comes to LED display screen, Apple Inc.’s big move to unveil its 24-inch LED Cinema Display at 2009 Consumer Electronics Show is

expected more than a boon for Mac laptop users but a mark to exhibit LED power at CES 2009. Mr. Lee also bears great expectation for the market to take a leap because the environmentally friendly “green” electronics has been projected to grow despite a slight decline in overall consumer spending in 2009. “We see a relatively strong demand from new customers who want to seize the opportunity to fly high,” said Mr. Lee. As LED has been put into the spotlight over the past several years due to an energy crunch that took place around the same time to spur the crude oil price to skyrocket, the long-anticipated market is likely to surge in the coming seasons. Thanks to the tremendous energy savings, long life cycle, high color index, photometric design, and etc, LED will be whipping out all over the world. In the U.S., it is predicted that more than half of traditional incandescent lamp will be replaced by compact fluorescent lights (CFL) bulbs, a lighting product requiring 25% of the energy as

incandescent lamp does, while in Japan the trend has been taken place for more than two years. In Taiwan, where LED output accounts for 20% of the world’s total output, the government aims to weed out power-consumption streetlamp to change to LED lamps. Also, in South Korea, the government budgeted US$ 100 million for domestic LED lighting industry. Abiding by the worldwide government’s charter to companies for producing energyefficient appliances, all the industry players have evolved a well-rounded plan to meet the growing demand in the near future, which indicates a positive sign to Lumenlux as it is heading an adjusted direction to reach out to more foreign customers to move more firmly into an unfamiliar territory with a great potential for growth. “Our goal for 2009 is to integrate all of our distributors across the Asia Pacific rim so we will be likely to gain more ground through a significant collaboration,” said Mr. Lee.

anufacturing is a dead end in Taiwan, so we were established just to differentiate ourselves from our industry competitors by taking out as many patents as we can on our product and process design in the first place,” said Carter Chen, General Manager of Helio Optoelectronics Corp. to a PIDA reporter in an exclusive interview. The Taiwan-based fresh force in the lightemitting-diode (LED) industry was a sort of independent character because of its unique strategy to prioritize technology innovation among others, which, in other words, is to cultivate deeply into the most competitive capacity technology applying to the product and process line in terms of a solution provider rather than merely a back-end packaging company. Within two years and half, the technologyfocused company has aggressively applied for up

to 39 design patents regarding LED packaging in a number of different countries, Taiwan, China and the United States included (see table 1). To date, nine of all were issued while the others are still in the legal process to be granted (usually the application takes two years). Moreover, the continuous inventions poured into higher advanced technology development has eventually earned itself a notable reward in November in 2008 from the government, who commended the company for its creation by giving away 2008 Business Startup Award— the Gold Award in Technology-niche Industry Group. “It’s really inspiring to all of us because it proves that what we are doing is of much importance, value as well, in the technology industry,” said Mr. Chen, adding that they believe they are on the right track and will keep concentrated on the patent deployment in the future as intellectual property

first few months after establishment, but it turned out that the relatively small sized new comer then confronted a big challenge to place its orders to manufacturers due to a fully-run capacity at that time. “It took us another few months looking for manufacturing partners to put the product line architecture into their products, so we finally ended up setting up a factory just to retain our advantageous position in today’s global competition,” said Mr. Chen. Helio’s major LED products range widely from thru-hole LED lamp to high power emitter LED, as well as high power Ceramic LED for 10W, 20W, and above. In addition, the LED colors include white, milky white, R, G, B and A. But Helio’s success didn’t come about by accident. Founded in mid August in 2006, Helio was born to be specialized in technology research and development because co-founders Mr. Chen and Antoney Lee, the President, had meant to grow the company as a pure LED integrated circuit (IC) design house given a strong research and development team to support the original objective. According to the company, currently there are 84 employees with a large portion of all going to technology-based engineers, up to as high as 30% among all. Mr. Chen recalled, their impregnable R&D team, mostly derived from Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), a national research organization across multiple industrial technology fields that serves to strengthen the technological competitiveness of Taiwan, had worked out several promising products in the

Mr. Chen said this pioneer of solid state lighting which can be applied in vehicle lighting, monitors, traffic lighting, general lighting and other day-to-day use. The other cutting-edge product Helio has developed rapidly lies in HB LED (high-brightness light-emitting diode) field, which is generally reckoned as a hopeful for the electronics supply chain and is particularly attractive to distributors, as the technology will require full-system approaches from suppliers and manufacturers. Despite the gloomy economy ahead, Mr. Chen said the demand as far as he can see is still slightly increasing due to the worldwide governments’ effort to carry out major infrastructure projects to boost the economic growth. “We are expanding our manufacturing capacity so as to gorge more orders to produce different chip packaging to fulfill the customer needs,” noted Mr. Chen, stressing that it was contributed by the valuable business partners
