No Debating This Programs Value

No Debating this Programs Value by Corinne Lestch (Daily News 11/19/12) http://goo.gl/PJ9ZQC
It all started because one teacher decided to make debate mandatory in his history class at the Bronx School for Law, Government and Justice. On Monday, four of Erik Fogels students at the Concourse Village school will represent their debate team in a special visit with First Lady Michelle Obama at the White House. It was one of 12 after-school programs to win the 2012 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award, which includes a $10,000 award. speeches by Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, from which she drew inspiration for her own address. Last month, the debate league became a nonprofit with the help of Manhattan-based law firm Brown Rudnick LLP Bronx debate team one of 12 school which assisted them pro bono.

THE NYC URBAN DEBATE LEAGUE ON NEW YORK 1! "Having the chance to represent my peers in accepting this award from the First Lady of the United States in the White House was an experience that I'll never forget," said Starr Arroyo. "It showed me that the power of programs like NYCUDL to change kids' lives is recognized and valued." Starr Arroyo delivered a speech at the White House on how debate has helped her overcome so many obstacles and inspired her to follow in the footsteps of fellow South Bronx high school debater, NYC DEBATE Sonya Sotomayor who became the first Hispanic Supreme Court Justice. According to Starr, "Which is why I love the New York City Urban Debate League. You won't find any activity that makes you think and question so many ideas, read and research so many books, write and speak about the biggest problems in our world, and meet and compete against students across the nation. As President Obama stated in his speech to American students in 2009 "you may not know you could be a President or Supreme Court justice until you joined your school's debate team!" In that event, our students tackled the issue ofUS military intervention in the country of Syria (note - the majority of American adults cannot locate Syria on a map!). In our other event of middle school policy debate our debaters had researched and delivered speeches on expanding public transportation options. Our high school policy debaters also debated the issue of transportation - "The United States federal government should substantially increase its transportation infrastructure investment in the United States." Proposed policies ranged from alternative energy to increasing mass transit options to citywide bicycle programs. Our high school public forum debaters debated election campaign spending law with the recent US Supreme Court decision. The topic was "Resolved: On balance, the Supreme Court decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission harms the election process." Former South Bronx high school debater and now Supreme Court Justice Sonya Sotomayor would not have been prouder and denitely would have met her match!

PUBLIC DEBATE IN QUEENS ON CORRUPTION IN GOVERNMENT

Shout outs to ACORN High School's Tyler Anderson and Bronx School for Law's alumni Betty Mahmud at a community public debate on the topic of "Corruption or Conspiracy" regarding accusations against several local NYC elected ofcials. Betty took the side that such instances show a pattern of corruption in local, state, and national government. Tyler took the side that such charges were less about corruption and more about racial bias in politics. Betty responded that such reasoning was a red herring - a fallacy of awed logic to divert attention from the real problem of corruption. Tyler rebutted that the real problem was the media rush to judgement without trial, without fairness. The debate was passionate on both sides. Indeed, this is one of the most critical debates we are having in NYC politics today. State Senator James Sanders concluded the debate that no matter what our perspectives, that it was imperative that we "exercise our right to think" and public debates are essential in our democracy so that all sides can voice, learn, and grow from public discourse. So thank you Betty and Tyler for your incredible and passionate debate. And also huge shout outs to State Senator Sanders and Chief of Staff Paul Nichols for inviting us. And shout outs to Mr. Paul Nichols who was a high school debater and incredible debater at the public debate!

HELP SUPPORT OUR CITYS GREAT DEBATERS!

Due to my involvement in debate I received a full scholarship to Hamilton College. In the letter they said they were most impressed with my debate achievements and being captain on the debate team! Debate has given me so many skills and knowledge. We learn about things we do not learn in class and we compete against the best in the nation. I would not be valedictorian of my school if it wasnt for debate! - Erika Marte (College Sophomore, 2011 Gates Millennium Scholar - all expenses paid college, graduate, doctorate!)

The New York City Urban Debate League (www.nycdebate.org) was founded to provide free debate education opportunities to all students. All our programs are free for all schools, all students, and all year round! Every day we support schools to provide debate training during school and after school. Every week we have drop in debate centers open to all students to learn from the top debate coaches, computers, books and resources. Every weekend we hold free debate tournaments for all students and send our debaters across the nation including Columbia, Emory, Georgetown, Harvard, and Yale. Every summer we offer summer debate camps from the first day of summer to the last day of summer at top colleges.
"Those 4 years in debate were the educational foundation of everything I did. And I don't mean that in some simple form...I'm saying the finest education I got from any of the institutions I attended, the foundation of my mind that I got during those 4 years of competitive policy debate." - John Sexton, President of New York University

As a result, every year over 95% of our graduating seniors go on to college - many with full and partial scholarships. Principals report that debaters are at the top percentile when it comes to academic scores, attendance, graduation, scholarships, behavior, and leadership. Teachers report that debaters lead the class when it comes to performance, participation, and of course questioning and debating! Parents report that their children love debate, return home discussing current events, and of course try to use their debate skills at home! Students report that they learn college level skills and knowledge that are not traditionally offered in school and have fun debating about current events, and traveling and visiting colleges!
"I was recruited to join a policy debate team. Not the most popular activity to do, I stayed on the team simply because I was afraid of what would become of me if I didn't. With a pregnant best friend at 13 and gangs controlling many Bronx neighborhoods, I thought it was a matter of time until something would go wrong in my life. Through debate, I decided I wanted to go to college at fifteen, and once I wanted it, passion took over.... Debate proved to be the platform of my education. Not only did it build a confident woman in me, it put me in a setting that allowed me to meet remarkable people that have continued to shape my life for the better. I am indebted with the LGJ debate team... - Maribel Vaquez, writing in her successful Fulbright Scholarship application. Maribel was accepted to Franklin and Marshall College on a full scholarship from the Posse Foundation (all college expenses paid)

As the citys most rigorous academic program-we have been honored as one of the nation's top after school programs by every leading education organization in the nation including the White House, National Endowment for the Arts, National Council for the Humanities, the Institute for Museum and Library Services, the President's Committee for the Arts and Humanities and First Lady Michelle Obama as "one of the top arts and humanities based programs in the country."
"Maybe you could be a mayor or a Senator or a Supreme Court Justice, but you might not know that until you join student government or the debate team." - President Barack Obama

We are writing to you to ask for your support. This year over 40 new schools have asked to join the New York City Debate League and have asked for our help in starting their debate programs. Together we can close the achievement gap by providing all students and schools with the most rigorous academic program. All students can be Great Debaters!
