Singing
g to. mys'frf ti:ie dt:t'rrcien-
American School, I found
that they were many! The particu-
lar one that I thought to be rather
important was the lack of singing.
This can hardly be called a school
subject but it might mean more fun
for the student. I have noticed that
in this High School there is no sing
ing done except when preparing for
a great occasion like Christmas or
something like it.
If you have ever been in a school
in tht United States, you must know
that the k ' enestjoy in school is de-
. rived from learning and singing all
the well-known high school and
college songs.
. These .songs are remiders, after
have graduated from school;
they bring back many memo
des ofyourtime spent there. lknow
that in this particular High School
we have little time for the different
subjects and much less for singing.
But couldn't something be done? I
think that if the program were to
. be revised and a minute or two ta.
ken fr Jm each period, we could at
ieast get ten minutes for singing.
Of course, ten minutes is not very
much time., but, I am sure that we
all want some singing however lit-
tle it may be.

On the sixteenth of December,

During the first part of the even-

had arrived. After that time had
passed, they all gathered around
the lovely Ghristmas tree, to receive
the joke presents which everyone
had 'brought and given over to one
of the hostesses when they made
their first appearance. Some real
pre<"ents were also given out as well
as the joke presents. -
All the Rresents were partially
opened by one of the teachers so
that everyone could see what was
given and a lso not to have
anyone's feellings hurt.

A:s a mattet of fact, the rumor
goes around that: report cards orr
t he whole are not as they should
be, that there is room for much im-

Too large a nurpber of cards go
forth bearing P's - signs of failurt>:
Why should anyone be failing? Stu-
dents whose cards bear P's are
deficient in mentality, health, or
education, for it is a fac t that the
averege normal child can earry
the five high .school subjects with-
out a special tax on his or her
health or brains. In our High
School, where classes are small and
there is no lack . of individual at-
tention from the teacher, we have
not the excuse to offer that we did
too much interest n outltide
and not enough intere!'t in school
work That is where the truble
really lies - in the ack of interest,
rather of enthusiasm for the school
work There are too may who
h ave the ''pleasure first, study

may who come to school when thev
have no other place to go. We
cannot expect to maintain a high
standard in the American High
School, unless the indi vidual seu:
dents h-ave high standan:is and high
ideals.
