I truly feel there should be a mandatory standard in the design and construction of bunk beds. If one child dies due to unsafe bunk bed design and manufacture this questions whether voluntary standards in the industry are sufficient to protect our children. Due to the fact that there were more than 45 fatalities and over 100,000 injuries from 1990 to 1995, I feel that is overwhelming evidence that mandatory standards must be passed to ensure that this tragedy does not strike another American family.

COMMENT REGARDING ANPR ON BUNK BEDS
Commissioner, 1 am Sting is regard to the advanced notice of rule making pertaining to bunk beds- X truly feel that g,oing forward with the mandatory standard in the design and construction of bunk beds is the only correct action to tieXf even one child’s death is c’aused by nonconfofinance to the voluntary standard, that should be sufficient to tell us as an educated society that the voluntary nature of the standard is not good enough. There were in fact 54 and over 100,000 injuries from 1990 to 1995. This is obviously overwhe!ming evidence that mandatorry standards must be passed to save this nation’s precious chiIdre:n.
deaths

Subject: ANPR for Bunk Beds Date: Sun, 1 Mar 1998 23:35:07, -0500 From: CYWMlOA@prodigy.com (MR JOHN J YOUNG) To: cpsc-os@cpsc.gov
I am in the Through my process of purchasing a bunk bed set for my sons. investigating, I am finding it difficult to find manufacturers that implement safety standards in the construction of the bunk beds. The safety of my children is more important to me than anything. I would also like to see you come up with a specific rating system of bunk beds that are made. I would also like to see the US Consumer Product Safety Commission make their reccomendations of specific manufacturers and their bunk beds. If the public is not fully informed on the safety of a product , how do we know we are making the safest choice for our children?
PLEASE implement MANDATORY rules for bunk bed safety.
