This document describes only U4.0, U4.1 and U4.2 hardware configurations and equipping. Hardware configurations and equipping for previous releases are described in Hardware Configuration Manual for Multimedia Gateway U3C and Hardware Configuration Manual for Multimedia Gateway U3A and U3B.

1.2.1
Each equipment cabinet has space for four subracks, cabinet-specific power distribution panels (CPD120-A) and subrack-specific cooling equipment (FTRA-B). All of these are pre-installed, along with the intracabinet cables. In new deliveries, plug-in units can also be installed before delivery, or optionally on site. TBU and PD30 units are always equipped to all subracks in all three equipment cabinets. The subracks are numbered 1 to 4 from top to bottom. In order to give clear instructions on where each functional unit is installed, these subrack index numbers are used throughout this document. The subrack index numbers are presented in the figure below.

The CAMA equipment cabinet is included in all MGW configurations. The first two subracks of CAMA are intended for essential functions. CAMA and the mandatory functional units constitute the MGW base module, which is described in section Base Module (CAMA). The two lower subracks of CAMA (subracks 3 and 4), as well as all the subracks of CAMB and CAMC (subracks 5 to 12), are empty apart from the PD30 and TBU units. These 10 subracks are reserved for capacity expansions, and they are equipped depending on the capacity needed, according to the chosen configuration and the equipping principles explained further in this document. Empty plug-in unit positions in subracks are covered with cover plates.
1.2.2
Cabling cabinets
Cabling cabinets are optional, and their use depends on the chosen configuration. When cabling cabinets are used, there has to be one cabling cabinet for each equipment cabinet. The cabling cabinet panels are index numbered from 0 to 11, from top to bottom. The MGW features standard cabling cabinet types and TDM E1/T1 cabling cabinet types. The cabling cabinet options are described in section Cabling cabinet sales items .

Special configuration. Interdependency of NPS1P/NPS1, NPGEP and MXU units The maximum number of NPS1P/NPS1 or NPGEP units in CAMC depends on the equipping of MXUs in CAMC subrack 3 and 4. This is because MXUs and NPS1P/NPS1 or NPGEP units in CAMC use the same SFU ports. If MXU 22-23 in CAMC subrack 4 are equipped, NPS1(P) 6-7 or NPGEP 8-9 in CAMC subrack 1-2 cannot be equipped If MXU 20-21 in CAMC subrack 3 are equipped, NPS1(P) 8-9 or NPGEP 10-11 in CAMC subrack 3-4 cannot be equipped

NIWU (IW16P1A) provides the MGW's E1/T1 TDM with A/Ater interfaces. NIP1 (NI16P1A) provides the MGW's ATM over TDM interfaces using IMA. Both units contain E1/T1 interfaces and they are used in the NIWU/NIP1 subracks. An MGW that includes NIWU/NIP1 subracks must have a minimum of two NIWU or NIP1 units. The number of NIP1 units can be up to 30. The number of NIWU units can be up to 30 in ANSI balanced and ETSI unbalanced configurations without cabling cabinets, and up to 60 in ETSI balanced configurations without cabling cabinets. With standard cabling cabinets, there can be up to 60 NIWU units, and with TDM E1/T1 cabling cabinets up to 90 NIWU units in ETSI balanced, ETSI unbalanced and ANSI balanced configurations.
g IWS1E/T and NIWU/NIP1 units can never be equipped in the same subrack at the
same time. NIP1 units are equipped in index order, lowest index first. There can be at most three NIP1 units in a subrack. NIWU units are equipped after NIP1 units, subrack by subrack. There can be at most three, six or nine NIWUs in a subrack, depending on the chosen configuration. BIE1T-A, BIE1T and BIE1C

Back interface units BIE1T-A, BIE1T and BIE1C are used in configurations that do not include cabling cabinets. The back interface units are located at the rear of the equipment cabinet, directly behind the NIWU or NIP1 units that they serve. BIE1T-A is a back interface unit for E1 balanced interfaces, with eight RJ-45 connectors, two E1 interfaces via each RJ-45 connector. This panel is used in ETSI configurations. BIE1T is a back interface unit for T1 balanced interfaces, with 16 pieces of RJ-45 connectors for 16 physical PDH lines. This panel is used in ANSI configurations. BIE1C is a back interface unit for E1 unbalanced interfaces, with 32 pieces of SMB connectors for 16 physical PDH lines. This panel is used in ETSI configurations.

There can be up to 3 NIP1 units in a subrack. NIWU units are equipped after NIP1 units, subrack by subrack. Depending on the cabling cabinet configuration, there may be up to 3, 6 or 9 NIWUs in a subrack. The subracks and positions of the NIWU units are specified in the table below. The IW1S1A unit provides STM-1/VC-12 (63 PCM) and OC-3/VC-11 (84 PCM) interfaces and a direct interface to SDH/SONET transmission equipment. An MGW which has IWS1E/T subracks must have a minimum of two IWS1 units. The number of IWS1 units can be expanded up to 40 pieces. IWS1E/T and NIWU/NIP1 units can never be equipped in the same subrack at the same time. IWS1E/T units cannot be equipped in a subrack without an MXU pair. Equipping in U4.0/U4.1: IWS1E/T units can be equipped in index order from slot 1 to 3, which allows the maximum number of TCU/CDSP-Ds in the same subrack (a total of three IWS1E/T units and nine TCUs). Alternatively, a fourth IWS1E/T unit can be equipped to slot 4 in index order, which reduces the maximum number of TCU/CDSP-Ds in this subrack (a total of four IWS1E/T units, seven TCUs, and slot 5 left empty). Equipping in U4.2: IWS1E/T units can be equipped in index order from slot 1 to 4 (a total of four IWS1E/T, the maximum number of TCU/CDSP-DT is five).

The network interface NPGEP, interface 2x1000Base-T/LX/-SX (NP2GE/-A) provides the MGW's IP interfaces for userplane and signalling traffic. The Optical single mode SFP tranceiver module is delivered by defaut with NP2GE/-A plug-in unit. The MMF SX connector requires SFP transceiver modules, which need to be ordererd separately. The unit provides two optical or electrical 1 GB Ethernet interfaces. Only one interface type may be used at a time (2 x gigabit optical or 2 x gigabit electrical). The functional unit name is NPGEP, regardless of the Ethernet interface type used. If NPGEPs are included in the MGW configuration, there must be a minimum of one NPGEP pair. The network interface NPS1P/NPS1 interface ATM STM-1/OC-3 (NP8S1/-A) provides the MGW's high bandwidth STM-1/OC-3 ATM interfaces. The unit may be configured either with 2n equipment protection or without 2n equipment protection. When configured with 2n equipment protection the functional unit name is NPS1P. When configured without 2n equipment protection the functional unit name is NPS1. The NP8S1/-A is a two-slot wide plug-in unit. When the NPS1 units are configured without nominal (2n) redundancy, only units with even index number are installed, and the slots for the odd-indexed units are left empty.
