ENGAGE

Brainstorm animals. Use different environments the students are familiar with – farm, jungle, sea, countryside
to stimulate ideas. Present other animals. Cover the following in order to prepare students for the exercises:
Ostrich; hippopotamus; otter; budgerigar; elephant; cheetah; parakeet; alligator; penguin; walrus; whale;
kangaroo and gibbon. Use mime, short description or pictures.

Present verbs of movement using mime: run; swim; fly; climb; walk; crawl and jump.

Ask if a whale can swim, kangaroo can jump etc but don’t board any answers yet.

STUDY

Board: A bird fly (Elicit can). Board: A whale fly (Elicit can’t). Elicit 2 more sentences.
Drill all sentences on the board. Pay attention to pronunciation of “t” in can’t. Use 3x3 drilling technique where
appropriate.

Ask the students in pairs to complete the exercises. Demonstrate each exercise before handing it out to
students. Monitor, observe and provide feedback on each exercise. Feedback should be self-correction, peer
correction and teacher correction.

ACTIVATE

“Can and Can’t pelminism” is played with each of the tables cut into separate squares. Divide the group into
pairs. Demonstrate part of the game first. In each pair students place all the pictures face down on the table.
Pictures should be placed on one side and sentences on the other. Each student takes a turn to pick up one
picture and then a sentence. If the sentence matches the picture then the student retains both. The aim of the
game is to obtain as many matching pairs as possible.
