Loctite® cleaners and degreasers are highly effective and are
available in both aqueous and solvent-based formulations.
When choosing a cleaner or degreaser, the major factors to
consider are dry time, residue, odor, and substrate compatibility.
Residue is a particularly important concern because if there
is any secondary processing of the part, e.g., painting or
bonding, a residue could interfere with that process. Substrate
compatibility is a common concern when dealing with plastics
and solvent-based cleaners. The following chart will help
you to select the appropriate cleaner for your application.

thread sealing FINDING THE RIGHT THREAD SEALANT

When choosing a thread sealant, there are several factors that FOR THE APPLICATION
need to be considered. The single most important question is
substrate. Are you dealing with plastic threads, metal threads, What are the benefits of using thread sealants?
or a combination of both? Plastic threads usually require a Thread sealants provide tight seals between joints, can withstand

a sealant, it is important to consider all of the factors. The
following chart will help guide you through your choices. What is galling?
Galling occurs when metals weld together due to lack of lubrication
or ineffective lubrication during assembly. Without proper
lubrication, mating surfaces wear against each other and result in
“welding” or seizure. Sealants containing PTFE increase lubricity,
reduce galling, and enable easier assembly and disassembly.

Are there any thread sealants available that are compatible

with systems in oxygen rich environments?
Loctite® Thread Seal Tape with PTFE is the only thread
sealing product that is compatible with systems in oxygen
rich environments.

Why is the “squeeze-out” material around the joint not cured?

In order for anaerobic material to cure, there has to be two mating
metal surfaces. Any excess material that squeezes from the
assembly can simply be wiped away.

Why use a solvent-based sealant on plastic fittings?

Anaerobic sealants work when they harden in the absence of air

Is there a threadlocker for high temperature applications?

Yes, Henkel has threadlockers for applications below 300°F (150ºC) and between 300°F (150ºC) to 650°F (343ºC).

The Source Answers your qUESTIONS

One example is Loctite® 2422™, a medium strength product for temperatures up to 650°F (343ºC).
Other high temperature products can be found in the Properties Chart.
Are there products that work well on oily parts?
There are several Loctite® products with oil-cutting capabilities. These include Loctite® 243™, 246™, 266™ and
294™ threadlockers. Use the Properties Chart to choose the one that is right for your application.
What do I do when I have a blind hole application?
The application method for blind hole assemblies requires that the product be applied to both parts. If the product
is applied to the fastener only, air pressure will force the liquid threadlocker to escape as you torque down.
Do you have a product for inactive metals?
L octite® 2760™ (high strength) threadlocker enables the assembly of inactive metals without the need to use a primer.
These products are ideal for use on metals such as stainless steel, zinc, magnesium, black oxide, cadmium, anodized
aluminum, passivated titanium, and others.
How much time is needed for the adhesive to cure?
Most anaerobic adhesives attain full cure in around 24 hours but will fixture in less time. For cure speed
of the various products, refer to the Properties Chart or to the Technical Data Sheets (TDS).
Can I use threadlockers on plastic threads?
For plastic fasteners, only use Loctite® 425™ Assure™ Instant Adhesive, a surface curing threadlocker.
When should I use a primer?
Primers help speed the curing process for faster return to service. For this reason, they can be used in any
application but are most often used on less active metal surfaces. Alternatively, the use of Loctite® 2760™
primerless product provides a fast cure on inactive surfaces.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT THREADLOCKER FOR YOUR APPLICATION

How do I decide which threadlocker to use?
Loctite® threadlockers are available in many grades to satisfy a wide range of applications. To make
grade selection easy, the grades are color-coded to help you identify one threadlocker from the other.

Low Strength – Purple color, removable with hand tools, good for adjustment screws,
calibration screws, meters and gauges, and for fasteners up to 1/4" in diameter. HELPFUL HINTS

Medium Strength – Blue color, removable with hand tools, good for machine tools and presses,
pumps and compressors, mounting bolts, gearboxes, and for fasteners up to 3/4" in diameter.

high Strength – Red color, for permanent assemblies, heavy equipment, suspension bolts, motor
and pump mounts, bearing cap bolts and studs, and for fasteners up to 1" and larger in diameter.

wicking – Green color, removable with heat and hand tools, for pre-assembled fasteners,
instrumentation screws, electrical connectors, carburetors and fasteners up to 1/2" in diameter.

Non-Liquids – Loctite® 2033™ is a gel formulation. Loctite® QuickStix™ 248™ (medium strength)
and Loctite® QuickStix™ 268™ (high strength) are semisolid threadlocker sticks.
