How Not To Use LinkedIn
Do not use linkedin like you would use facebook. These are two different platforms : one for professional networking and other to stay connected with friends and families. Do not send out invitation for the sake of adding connections. As we all know, while using Facebook or twitter most people just add whoever they want and usually the favor is returned. If you are going to send an invite to connect with someone on linkedin, make sure you create a message that outlines why you are trying to add them. If you start adding people like you do on twitter or facebook there is a chance that you might get blocked. Do not use drunk, excited and other forms of too friendly images as your profile image. Linkedin is a professional networking platform so do what you would do professionally in the real world. Keep your profile image professional looking. Do not share your thoughts and what you are doing as you would on twitter or other platforms. If it relates to your work or something important, go ahead and update the section that says "What are you working on now?" Use this feature wisely to update your status. Updating your profile status couple times a week is more than enough. Do not join groups for the sake of adding one more group logo on your profile page. Join a group only if it relates to your career or interest and only, only if you can devote time to participate and be a valuable member of that group. Do not add application to feed your blog posts on your profile unless the content on your blog is relevant. If you have a profile showing that you are an engineer and are running a political humor blog on the side out of interest, showing your political humor on your professional profile might not be a wise idea. Do not beg for recommendations. If people think you are good they will recommend. If you feel like asking for a recommendation, make sure the person you are asking is a good colleague whose words actually bear some weight when possible employers look at your profile. Don't have your uncle,aunt,mom and dad leave recommendations for you. We are not in high school. Do not brag too much while writing your summary. The whole "I am the sh**" kind of summary might be appropriate for facebook, twitter, myspace, etc. but it's not for LinkedIn. Write a summary of yourself in short but write it in a way you would on a paper resume. Make it look and sound professional. 1. Don’t Start or Be Part of the Rumors You are not in High School! Once everyone knows layoffs are coming the news becomes talk of the office. You see people gathering during lunch hours and even during the work period talking about who might get laid off and who might be able to keep their jobs. Sure, you might be the one to get canned but until you know for a fact assuming the worst isn’t always the solution. Keep your head up and rev up your speed when it comes to getting work done. If someone comes to you with a rumor that someone else might be getting laid off or that you are the one to get canned, politely say that you are either busy or will wait for the names to be announced. Rumors are nothing but an addition to the already burning fire, don’t start the fire or be the fuel to aggravate the heat. 2. Get In The Loop and Start Networking Remember the guy you exchanged business cards with on the subway or while taking a business trip to a different city? Its time to get in touch. Networking is a great way to boost your chances of getting back in the job market should you be the one to get laid off. Not all your contacts or the network you belong to might be in the same field but the same applies to their network as well. There are always possibilities and with a large and influential network your possibilities are even higher. Offline networking is great since it gives you an opportunity to mingle with people personally and face to face. However, do not underestimate the power of online networking. The Internet has become an informational hub and also a networking platform. Make use of it. Stay active on social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn etc. Of course not all people use these platforms for professional purposes but a little professional networking with personal networking is a great way to let others know about yourself and build a good impression among your network. Once again avoid giving too much information to your network, both online and offline. No one needs to know that you might be getting laid off. Keep it to yourself and get your networking skills rolling. Make sure not to use your cubicle as a place to network, offline or online. Do your part in understanding the policy before clearing the clutter both physical and virtual. 5. Don’t Be an Ass Kisser This is almost unavoidable with some people. They hear the company might be laying off and everyone swarm like bees around the boss like he is a honey pot. Avoid being an ass kisser. Your boss is in as much stress as you are. Letting people off due to economy and failing business isn’t something people enjoy doing and it causes stress to managers and bosses as well. Anything and everything that shows your skills should be added. Finances, finances, finances : It’s time to talk finances and figure things out with your spouse. Talk about insurance, bills and recurring payments and how you are going to handle them. Set your priorities straight. If you have to choose between mortgage payment and a credit card payment, what would your priority be? Exactly! Talk it over and set it straight. Network, network, network : If you haven’t created accounts on sites such as Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc. get on it right now. Maybe when you landed your first job it wasn’t a need but in todays job search landscape it is a must. Start using them to connect with the known and unknown. Stay in touch : Just cause you were laid off doesn’t mean you have to keep your distance from your ex co-workers. Stay in touch with them. They might start their own business and the first person they will think about is you if you keep connected with them. Also, they can be great references for future employment so keep in touch. You are the one who got laid off remember. Stay positive : Positive thinking leads to positive outcomes. Think negative and negative results will follow you. The job search landscape has changed with emerging social media platforms. Utilize them. Interaction offline is critical, but in this day and age it’s not sufficient. Reach out to others, both online and offline. Worship Your Search For a Job And you better be loyal. Job search in itself is a job and whether you like it or not someone has to do it. Unfortunately, this might be you. If you are searching for job think of it as a job itself. Dedicate yourself towards the goal of finding a job. Make it a religion until you can land a job and once you get the job you want, switch your religion to the job itself rather than the job search. keep worshiping. Always Diversify Your Job Search Everyone wants everybody specialized in a particular field, no doubt about that. But a handyman who can fix plumbing and then nail the shingles on my roof always gets my business over the plumber. Diversify your job search. Don’t always rely on what you know, but think of how that reliance can help you apply your skills towards other things. Ignore The Job Data Numbers. Usually higher the number the better but not in this case. If you recently lost your job you tend to see more people who recently lost theirs as well. This does nothing but causes depression. I am sure it has happened to you, you buy a new car and all of a sudden you see the same model all over the road. Exactly. It has always been there, you just didn’t notice. Ignore the fact that your friend, uncle, aunt and even mother in law is unemployed. It’s about you.

Lose The Negative Attitude Do you find yourself buried under negative feelings? Well, get over it. Negative attitude gives birth to negative outcomes. Positive outcomes are the results of positive attitude. It propels you to do better. It pushes you further. Think positive. You might not have found a job today but what’s the guarantee tomorrow will be the same as today? There isn’t. Think positive. Plan a Schedule, Stick With It I have said it before that you should think of job search as a job itself. sound, it really helps to organize your job search schedule. Anything on a piece of paper (google calendar or whatever) is much better to follow than to simply pull it off of your mind. Create a schedule, a mind map and go with it. it will help you focus and execute much better. Online and Offline Resume I have heard a few people say that there will be a time when there won’t be a need for a resume. All I have to say to them is - you’re wrong! When it comes to employment, there is only one thing that can give a peak into the potential candidate’s skills and experience. Create a resume, dust it off every once in a while. Make sure your resume doesn’t just stay in paper and ink form. Use networking sites such as LinkedIn where you can use your profile as an online resume. Resume will exist, forever. The only thing I can’t guarantee is the paper and ink form. Get on the web and build one out as soon as possible if you haven’t already. Brush On Your Skills Think of a pipe that hasn’t had water flowing through it for couple years. You turn it on and all you can see is rust coming out. That’s you if you don’t brush your skills. Let’s be honest here, sometimes luck does have a big play in our job search. If for some reason you don’t get a job when you expected you would, there is a high probability that you might lose a few golden touches that you had in your field. Keep them brushed. Shine them every once in a while. Your skill is what sells you, can’t let it rust. No way!
