If you could have lunch with any person from history, who would it be and why? Do you watch the news regularly? Why or why not? What comes to mind when you hear the word evil?

For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hopethat the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God. Romans 8:2021

What does the Bible say?

If God is so powerful, why is there so much evil in the world? Its a daunting question, and not one thats answered simply. However, in a day and age when evil acts are broadcast all over the world, its an unavoidable question for Christ followers. Contrary to popular belief, evil actually points to the existence of God. If theres no God, how could evil exist in the rst place? The Bible explains the true root of evil and Gods plan to rescue us from it:

God is good.
This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. 1 John 1:5 For you are not a God who is pleased with wickedness; with you, evil people are not welcome. Psalm 5:4 The Bible presents this vital and simple truth: God has no evil in him, and he takes no pleasure in evil. Anytime were outraged by an evil act in the news, God is even more outraged. The pain and suering that result from evil grieve him. God desires good and rejects evil. What makes it dicult for people to reconcile the existence of God and evil in the world? _______________________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________________

Evil results from disregarding God.

Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. They have become lled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice Romans 1:28,29 Every evil action committed by a person can be traced back to that person disregarding God. People often ask why evil exists if God exists, but people introduced evil into creation. People have free will and we have a choice. If everything good comes from God (James 1:17), then the only other option is evil. Theres no middle ground. Why might people nd it dicult to believe that theres no middle ground, only God and evil? _______________________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________________

Jesus delivers us from evil.

For Christ also suered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit. 1 Peter 3:18 Through Jesuss death and resurrection, the power of evil over our lives is broken. We now have access to God, and the Holy Spirit guides us away from evil. When we turn from evil, we start to participate in the good works God has planned for us. God is working through his Church to rid the world of evil once and for all, moving his creation towards the goodness he intends for it. How do disciples participate with God in ridding the world of evil? _______________________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________________

How To Use This Material

This material is designed for small group discussion. The goal is not to just teach a lesson but to apply truth to our lives. The best preparation for each small groups leader is to have these guides in hand during the Sunday message so they can take notes to prepare for their group meeting. Each weeks lesson is taken from the GODS NOT DEAD book chapter of the same title. Reading that chapter will prepare the leader for a successful group discussion. These materials work best with a group of four to twelve people. Each lesson has four parts: connect, word, application, and prayer: CONNECT (1015 minutes) Most lessons have three warm-up questions provided. Pick the question or questions that will relate best to the group. If you think of a better warm-up question, feel free to use it. A good warm-up question is not controversial, should require no Bible knowledge, and should have no right or wrong answer. Good warm-up questions ask for a persons opinion and experience and should be loosely related to the topic in the word section. Everybody is encouraged to talk during the CONNECT time. WORD (1520 minutes) Each lesson has several key points in bold type followed by scripture, brief comments, questions, and blank lines. Use the extra lines to record additional comments, cross references, illustrations, and other thoughts that might help communicate the point. APPLICATION (1020 minutes) Maturity is not about how much we mark up or read our Bibles, but about how much we obey our Bibles. The goal is for truth to be absorbed into our hearts, not just into our heads. Therefore, personal application is at the very heart of discipleship and spiritual growth. Everybody is encouraged to speak during the personal application time. PRAYER (1020 minutes) The prayer time may begin with some answers to prayers to encourage and build the faith of the group. If your group has eight or more people, it may be a good idea to break into two or three smaller groups during the prayer time. Everyone should be encouraged to participate in the prayer time. Expect God to answer your prayers.
