Railroads are building new intermodal yards near Chicago, Dalas, and Los Angeles, and some states and the federal government are modifying tunnels and bridges to allow the larger rail cars. Such an approach promises to reduce shipping costs by as much as 30% compared with over the road trucking. Not only are shipping costs reduced, but the shortage of truck drivers is relieved in the process. And many feel that the more traffic we can shift from the highways to rails, the less oil consumption, pollution, and wear and tear on highways we will have. Another innovation in shipping is development of all freight airports. Denver, fort Worth, and Huntsville already have them. Locations in Kentucky, North Carolina, Nebraska, Georgia, Washington, Arkansasn, New York, Ohio, and Florida are considering proposals for the construction of all air freight industrial parks. The concepts is innovative, if not downright revolutionary. At the core of these parks will be factories, score of them, that want supplies and want them fast because of the

emergence of Just in time (JIT) manufacturing. Factories will be surrounded by a web of monorails and electronic vehicle corridors connecting teh factories to an airport with long runways- the gateway of the factories to global markets. The arrangement will be the epitome of JIT manufacturing where conveyors carry parts from airplane to factory floor and finished products back to teh cargo holds of airplanes.
