Elements of Good Design
a higher standard. His five standards are: 1) Design is more than meets the eye. He says “it’s as much intellectual and visceral as it is visual.” 2) Design is about communicating benefits. What’s in it for the reader/viewer? 3) Design is not about designers. It’s for your client not for your portfolio! 4) Design is not an ocean; it’s a fishbowl. It’s got to fit your target market. 5) Design is creating something you believe in. He says it’s better to step away from a project than to compromise your values. 10 Principles German industrial designer Dieter Rams, who is often linked with the Braun company, wrote these 10 principles of good design in 1985. 1. Good design is innovative. 2. Good design makes a product useful. 3. Good design is aesthetic. 4. Good design makes a product understandable. 5. Good design is unobtrusive. 6. Good design is honest. 7. Good design is long lasting. 8. Good design is thorough down to the last detail. 9. Good design is environmentally friendly. 10. Good design is as little design as possible. Okay, so what do you think? I’d love to hear from readers about your principles of good design. Send me your thoughts at mikeneer@coreldrawhelp.com

The winners have been announced to Corel’s 2011 International Design Contest, and the entries are outstanding. What comes through clearly is the tremendous originality of the contestants. This is apparent in their style, in their choice of subject, and, I’m sure, even in their definition of what makes good design. Every CorelDRAW user has his or her idea of what is good design, and it may change with the type of project as well. But not everyone is able to state what makes it good; many would say it’s a feeling, a look, which comes through the art and also meets the needs of a customer. I believe it’s a good idea to describe what you do in words; it clarifies and sharpens how you work. So… So that sent me on a search for some good definitions of good design. Here are three different examples; see what you think. Building blocks and big picture Jacci Howard Bear from About .com says good design has two layers – the building blocks and the big picture. Her building blocks include lines, shapes, mass, texture, and color. The big picture, however, includes six principles – balance, proximity/unity, alignment, repetition/ consistency, contrast, and white space. Communication art Chuck Green from ideabook.com Design Store says design is a communication art, and people should follow
