Dear Members of Congress, For two weeks, we’ve seen the impact of the shutdown of the federal government spread and threaten Americans who are young and old, rich and poor, living in nearly every community across our country. In a little more than a day, over 1,000 people stood alongside those impacted by the shutdown to ask you to find a compromise that advances the common good. The text of our petition to you, as our elected representatives, is as follows: We, the undersigned, call on Congress to end the government shutdown NOW. This shutdown hurts all Americans; seniors will see “Meals on Wheels” cut, preschoolers will be turned away from Head Start, and public servants will be without pay as bills pile up. Important programs like the Women, Infant, and Children program, Supportive Services for Veteran Families, and refugee resettlement programs provide much-needed assistance that vulnerable populations count on as they seek self-sufficiency and a better life. Congress’ inability to compromise has had a real impact on those that need it most. The government shutdown needs to end now before the situation gets worse. We ask you to consider the poor, the homeless, those doing their best to put food on the table for their families. Our agencies will continue to do our best to meet the needs of those struggling to get by, but we cannot do it alone. A prolonged government shutdown will prevent those we serve from achieving the stability they need to reach self-sufficiency and fulfill their full potential. With 46 million Americans living below the federal poverty line, now is not the time to refuse to compromise. The Catholic Charities movement calls on you to pursue compromise and a spirit of good will and public service in doing what’s best for the nation by ending the shutdown of the federal government. Sincerely, Father Larry Snyder President Catholic Charities USA
