THE FIRST TABLET When in the height heaven was not named, And the earth beneath did not yet bear a name, And the primeval Apsu, who begat them, And chaos, Tiamut, the mother of them both Their waters were mingled together, And no field was formed, no marsh was to be seen; When of the gods none had been called into being, And none bore a name, and no destinies were ordained; Then were created the gods in the midst of heaven, Lahmu and Lahamu were called into being... Ages increased,... Then Ansar and Kisar were created, and over them.... Long were the days, then there came forth..... Anu, their son,... Ansar and Anu... And the god Anu... Nudimmud, whom his fathers, his begetters..... Abounding in all wisdom,...' He was exceeding strong... He had no rival Thus were established and were... the great gods. But Tiamat and Apsu were still in confusion... They were troubled and... In disorder... Apru was not diminished in might... And Tiamat roared... She smote, and their deeds... Their way was evil... Then Apsu, the begetter of the great gods, Cried unto Mummu, his minister, and said unto him: "O Mummu, thou minister that rejoicest my spirit, Come, unto Tiamut let us go! So they went and before Tiamat they lay down, They consulted on a plan with regard to the gods, their sons. Apsu opened his mouth and spake, And unto Tiamut, the glistening one, he addressed the word:

. . Then Ea. . . Let there be lamentation. By day I can not rest. His knees became weak.... and let us lie down again in peace. she spawned monster-serpents. .. . They banded themselves together and at the side of Tiamat they advanced. .. but thou shalt destroy it.." Mummu answered.. and let us lie down again in peace. in.their way. I will. let us lie down in peace. ..... their. Made in addition weapons invincible. They joined their forces and made war....and hostile to the gods was the counsel Mummu gave: Come." Apsu harkened unto him and his countenance grew bright. let us lie down in peace. Ummu-Hubur [Tiamat] who formed all things. They prepared for battle. Lamentation they sat in sorrow ...... But I will destroy their way.. thou didst.. . and said: . .... . he weepeth and sitteth in tribulation... Apsu is laid waste... he spake: . of fear.... thy..!" And Tiamat harkened unto the word of the bright god. She uttered a curse. Since he (Mummu) planned evil against the gods his sons. She raged and cried aloud....... for the gods did she create.... went up and he beheld their muttering..... fuming and raging.. he was afraid...... and Mummu.." When Tiamat heard these words...... .. we shall not lie down in peace. their way is strong.. grievously. and unto Apsu she spake: "What then shall we do? Let their way be made difficult. they gave way beneath him. Then by day shalt thou have rest. who knoweth all that is......... ... ...... they will smite. Because of the evil which their first-born had planned. unto the tempest shalt thou.. and gave counsel unto Apsu.. She. . who were taken captive. the gods in the midst of. by night shalt thou lie down in peace... They were furious..

They are banded together and at the side of Tiamat they advance. To give the battle-signal. Among the gods who were her sons. . They are furious. Unto him she entrusted. and the monster Lahamu. saying: "Let the opening of your mouth quench the Fire-god. "Tiamat our mother hath conceived a hatred for us. She exalted Kingu. thus exalted. and his anger was appeased. saying: Thy command shall not be without avail. The days went by. Tiamat planned evil. And hurricanes. Fierce monster-vipers she clothed with terror. they devise mischief without resting night and day. Ea harkened to this thing. The dominion over all the gods have I entrusted unto him. And mighty tempests. inasmuch as he had given her support. and raging hounds. Be thou exalted. Their bodies reared up and none could withstand their attack. and scorpion-men. He went and. instead of blood. she made them of lofty stature. without fear of the fight. to control the fight. All that Tiamat had plotted he repeated unto him. They bore cruel weapons. let him display his might!" THE SECOND TABLET Tiamat made weighty her handiwork. standing before Ansar.

THE FOURTH TABLET They prepared for him a lordly chamber. their spirit was exalted. saving: Thy command shall not be without avail.' Now Kingu. They ate bread. thy word is Anu! Henceforth not without avail shall be thy command. Thy fate is unequaled. That he may go and fight your strong enemy! Lahmu and Lahamu heard and cried aloud All of the Igigi [The elder gods] wailed bitterly. thy word is Anu! 0 Marduk. In Upsukkinaku seat yourselves joyfully together. She hath given him the Tablets of Destiny on his breast she laid them. irresistible shall be thy command. did they decree the fate. Nudimmud was afraid and turned back. The South wind and the North wind and the East wind and the West wind He brought near to the net. beheld the fulfillment of his word.. Then he set out. But as for the god who began the rebellion. his mighty weapon. The bow and the quiver he hung at his side. .. in his right hand he grasped it. and thy command shall be fulfilled.. To disturb the inward parts of Tiamat. ferocious. He harnessed and yoked unto it four horses. the gift of his father Anu. O Lord. they were flecked with foam. and the tempest. Then the lord raised the thunderbolt.. They rejoiced. . Command now and let the garment vanish. be exalted in thy command.. it shall crush thy foe. speak thou the word.. They give him an invincible weapony which overwhelmeth the foe. thou art our avenger! We give thee sovereignty over the whole world. they followed after him. and swift of pace. the garment reappeared. the seven of them. the storm unequaled for terror. saying. He mounted the chariot. Destructive. and the ring. With overpowering brightness his head was crowned. He sent forth the winds which he bad created.. And speak the word again and let the garment reappear! Then he spake with his mouth.. " Marduk is king!" They bestowed upon him the scepter. On his lips he held .. ." Then set they in their midst a garment. mighty in battle. overwhelming.. To destroy and to create. Sit thou down in might. He slung a spear upon him and fastened it. and. and the throne. He raised the club.... he took his way." After the gods his fathers had decreed for the lord his fate. He set the lightning in front of him. He created the evil wind. and the whirlwind. And the fourfold wind. and they did homage unto him. He made ready the bow. and the wind which had no equal. were their teeth.their first-born they spake: "May thy fate. Again he commanded it. O lord. He made a net to enclose the inward parts of Tiamat..

He took them captive. so that they could not escape. . Then they beheld him. in thy place are they! " Then the lord raised the thunderbolt. And her courage was taken from her.. Let then thy host be equipped. .she lost her reason. The gods his fathers beheld him. He perceived the muttering of Kingu. and turned back. him. her spouse.. His will was destroyed and his motions ceased. . With lips that failed not she uttered rebellious words: "... As Marduk gazed. thou hatest. their fathers. and their sight was troubled. the gods beheld him. the leader. and her mouth she opened wide.. And the gods. who marched by her side. And against Tiamat. her host was scattered. The terrible winds filled her belly. And the lord drew nigh. he broke their weapons.. his mighty weapon.. . and were afraid. . Tiamat uttered wild. But Tiamat. They took to flight to save their lives. Trembled. he gazed upon the inward parts of Tiamat. who marched by his side. When be had slain Tiamat.. thus he sent the word: Thou art become great.. And the evil wind that was behind him he let loose in her face. From their places have they gathered. To the fight they came on. their. She trembled and shook to her very foundations. to the battle they drew nigh. He overcame her and cut off her life. As Tiamat opened her mouth to its full extent. she pronounced her spell.. And the gods of the battle cried out for their weapons. that. he pierced her heart.. And against the gods my fathers thou hast contrived thy wicked plan. He severed her inward parts.. And the gods her helpers. the counselor of the gods. thou hast exalted thyself on high. Thou hast... even as Anu.... his helpers.. He drove in the evil wind. piercing cries. he grasped in his hand. He cast down her body and stood upon it. the gods beheld him. let us join battle! When Tiamat heard these words. he should issue deerees. let thy weapons be girded on! Stand! I and thou. Kingu was troubled in his gait. Beheld their leader's. The lord spread out his net and caught her. who was raging... she turned not her neck. Then advanced Tiamat and Marduk. And thy heart hath prompted thee to call to battle. She recited an incantation. Her might was broken. He seized the spear and burst her belly. Thou hast exalted Kingu to be thy spouse. while as yet she had not shut her lips. But they were surrounded... thy coming as lord of the gods.. She was like one posessed. thou hast followed after evil.

In the midst thereof he fixed the zenith. THE FIFTH TABLET He (Marduk) made the stations for the great gods. He set the station of Bel and Ea along with him. he surveyed the regions thereof. That none might err or go astray. His fathers beheld. He passed through the heavens.. Moreover. who marched at her.. He caused Anu. Then the lord rested. The Moon-god he caused to shine forth. He brought affliction. And he founded E-sara. Them and their opposition he trampled under his feet.. He conquered.. And with his merciless club he smashed her skull. and with the god Dug-ga he counted him. The . The stars. And he made the North wind bear it away into secret places. After he had .. Over the captive gods he strengthened his durance. who had been exalted over them. gazing upon her dead body. He made strong the bolt on the left and on the right. the night he entrusted to him.. And bade them not to let her waters come forth. They received punishment from him. images.. Presents and gifts they brought unto him. the days of the year . their strength he. And the lord stood upon Tiamat's hinder parts. And on the eleven creatures which she had filled with the power of striking terror. be returned. He split her up like a flat fish into two halves. And the lord measured the structure of the Deep. a mansion like unto it. their images. .. whom be bad conquered. He sealed them with a seal and in his own breast he laid them. The mansion E-sara which he created as heaven. he stationed a watchman. and Ea in their districts to inhabit.. He opened great gates on both sides. and they rejoiced and were glad. And had made the arrogant foe even like And had fullv established Ansar's triumph over the enemy And had attained the purpose of Nudimmud.
