Academic Skills: Writing Assignment 1: Sources

Your QUESTION for this assignment You will be emailed a question related to your intended course of study in the first year of your undergraduate degree. The email will be sent only to your University of Manchester email address. You must answer the question you have been sent; you are not allowed to choose another question. If you do not receive a question, please tell your Academic Skills Tutor in the tutorial in Week 2. In this assignment, you will search for relevant sources on your topic. ASSIGNMENT Using a variety of search tools, such as Manchester University Library Search and internet search engines (e.g. Google), you must find FIVE sources of information that give an answer to your question, or contain information that is relevant to the question. The sources of information can be books (printed or e-books), journals, theses, newspapers, websites, online discussion forums etc. (Note: do NOT cite Wikipedia as one of your sources. While Wikipedia is good for background information, the content is open to editing and therefore may be unreliable.)

The FIVE sources should comprise the following: 1. A web source from an ac.uk or edu domain. 2. A web page with the usage rights free to use or share. 3. A source accessed via Search in the University Library on-line. This must be a physical item, and you must give the name of the Library, e.g. Main Library or Joule Library, and the shelf mark. 4. A source accessed via Search in the University Library on-line. This can be an electronic item (e.g. electronic book or journal article) or a physical item. For a physical item, give the name of the Library, e.g. Main Library or Joule Library, and the shelf mark. 5. A source of your own choice (from 1 4 above or elsewhere), but not Wikipedia. GUIDANCE There are two videos that give guidance on how to carry out this assignment. 1. Advanced Google 2.
