County Jobs now group seek partnerships with local school districts
BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR A new organization is seeking partnerships with local school districts to make current students aware of employment opportunities in manufacturing and other fields that could be facing a shortage of skilled staff in coming years. Thomas E. Hostad, materials manager at Broan-NuTone in Hartford, spoke to the Germantown School Board Sept. 9 on behalf of Washington County Jobs Now, which was formed in April. The group was formed in response to the Washington County Retirement and Departure Intentions Survey Report which was issued in February. That report was prepared for the Germantown, Hartford Area and West Bend Area chambers of commerce in conjunction with Economic Development Washington County, Moraine Park Technical College, UWWashington County and the UW-Extension. According to the report, 17.5 percent of surveyed employees plan to retire within the next five years, 33.9 percent within the next 10 years and 50.9 percent over the next 15 years. The report states that the figures are "a surprising figure considering historical averages assume one-third of the workforce retiring every 15 years." "In recent years there have been a number of economic setbacks that have caused us to wonder if a shortage in labor supply is still plausible. The Washington County findings demonstrate there is not only a major concern for the supply of skilled workers in the future, but that the shortage is here today and will likely remain a critical issue for the foreseeable future," the report stated. Hostad said he hoped to discuss a collaborative relation-

ship with the Germantown School District and large employers in Washington County. Hostad said there is a "growing gap" forming to the point where projections indicate that 15 years from now there could be 13,000 more jobs in Washington County than people to fill those positions. "We are very concerned about that," Hostad said. He said that employers are having difficulty hiring people because job seekers don't have the skills necessary for the positions. He said the organization is hoping to make students aware of the jobs that are available in Washington County while talking with educators about the curriculum and education that would best prepare students for the workforce.

Updating in stages
By Tresa Erickson When a large home improvement project looms, like adding a deck or updating your kitchen or bathroom, it can be overwhelming. As you write out the supply list, you may find yourself thinking of all the other things you would rather be doing. If you aren't careful, those thoughts can take over and the project

moved to the back burner. To avoid this scenario, it may be helpful to look at the project as a series of stages. Say you're updating your kitchen. If you think about everything you have to do from the sanding to the painting to the lighting, you are sure to get overwhelmed and put the kibosh on the whole thing. If, however, you take the time to sit down and stage out the process, you are more likely to proceed with it. So, sit down and make a list of all the tasks that need to be done. Do you plan to change out the lighting? Write that down. Do you plan to paint the walls and

cabinets? Write that down. Do you plan to replace the trim? Write that down. Do you plan to add a backsplash? Write that down. Do you plan to change out the countertops? Write that down. Keep going until you have every task listed. Now, take that list and determine what tasks should occur first. Painting, for example, should probably come before the new trim, lighting, backsplash and countertops. That way, you won't have to worry about spilling paint on any of the new items. Once everything is painted,

...Schedule tasks over a period of time

From page 6
you might want to tackle the trim-your walls and cabinets will then be complete. Next up should be the countertops. Once they're in, you can install the backsplash and the under-the-cabinet lighting. Still feeling overwhelmed? Not to worry. Get out your calendar and schedule each of the tasks, giving yourself plenty of time to complete each. Don't try to paint everything all in one day. It won't happen. Give yourself a weekend to prep and paint the walls and an extra long weekend to tackle the cabinets. Work on one section of the cabinets at time. Do the lower cabinet bases one day, the upper cabinet bases the next and the cabinet doors the day after that. Wrap everything up on the final day with the installation of the doors and new hardware and whatever touchups may be needed. Once you have the tasks scheduled, you can start gathering the supplies and preparing for the work ahead. It is important that you have everything you need to complete each task. Multiple trips to the store will slow progress considerably. It is also important that you commit to the schedule and do your best to stick to it. Veer off too many times or try to do too much at once, and you may never get back on track again. You don't want to spend the next five years of your life working on your kitchen, or worse, stop work altogether and end up with a half-finished kitchen. Motivation, of course, is half the battle. If walls getting painted and new lighting going up is not enough to keep you on track, don't hesitate to try something else. Have some friends over to ooh and ah over what you have completed and cheer you on to the next stages, or treat yourself to a movie or dinner for each task you complete. Do whatever is needed to stay motivated. The more progress you make, the more disciplined you will become and the closer you will get to the kitchen you envisioned. Attacking large home improvement projects in stages can make quick work of them. Give it a shot. You just might get the project done and be free for other pursuits.

...Changes in manufacturing
From page 1
Hostad said that representatives from Washington County Jobs Now has held a few meetings and met with administrators from the largest public school districts in Washington County. All the superintendents at the meeting asked if they could continue to be part of the initiative. "We welcome the insight that they can provide. We think it will provide a great benefit to our work going forward," Hostad said. Hostad added the perception of manufacturing careers "is not the most positive one. Manufacturing has been through some ups and downs in the past 20 years. Many people got frustrated when manufacturing jobs left and went somewhere else in the world. I can tell you many of those are coming back to the US." He added that manufacturing has changed from "big black smokestacks." "One of the things we want to help teachers, staff, parents and young people to understand is that choosing a career in manufacturing doesn't commit a person to standing behind a machine for the next 30 to 35 years, or on an assembly line. There are all sorts of professions you can enter into once you get into a different business," Hostad said. Hostad added that members of Washington County Jobs Now would want to open up their factories to educators and students.

United Way of Washington County kicks off campaign

The United Way of Washington County kicked off its annual campaign Sept. 17 with 61,048 meals for local food pantries. Over 525 volunteers participated in helping to package meals in less than two hours at the campaign kick-off event at Washington County Fair Park. Joyce Garbaciak from Channel 12 News emceed the event. "The first goal we set for the campaign was to mobilize 200-plus volunteers to help with a growing need in Washington Countyhunger," stated Kristin Brandner, United Way Executive Director. "To have more than double the number of volunteers we originally planned to recruit has been inspiring and speaks volumes to the caring residents of our local community." Volunteers as individuals and in teams took on different roles to assemble and box up the macaroni and cheese meal packages which were donated to six food pantries and two homeless shelters. "Hunger is an issue affecting every size community today, both locally and nationally," explained Kris O'Meara who is co-chairing the 2013 United Way Campaign with her husband Dr. Mark O'Meara. "Last year during a peak month in November, 1,098 families received food from the six food pantries in Washington County; over 400 new families utilized services from the Full Shelf Food Pantry in West Bend for the first time. That is why we decided to focus our campaign kickoff in a way that increased awareness about hunger and provided a hands-on project so community members could immediately help." The second goal set for the 2013 campaign is a monetary goal needed to fund the programs and initiatives that address Washington County communities' most critical problems. The 2013 goal announced was $1,350,000, up 12.5% from the $1,200,000 raised last year. With the growing demand for basic need programs, United Way has set a vision to address the root cause of community problems. A new initiative that will focus on employmentjobs with family sustaining wages and work skill trainingwas announced. Over the next few months, United Way will work with community members to define strategies and community programs needed to make lasting changes in this area. "Mark and I support the mission of United Way and its new mobilizing communities' impact model," said Kris O'Meara, campaign co-chair. "We are rolling up our sleeves to be part of the solution and encouraging others to join us. We firmly believe that everyone plays a role in supporting our community." The campaign will run through Dec. 31. To learn more about the needs in Washington County or to make a donation online, go to the United Way website at www.unitedwayofwashingtoncounty.org.

Quality Matters: Which Plans Provide Highest-Quality Health Care? (NewsUSA)Choosing the right health care plan can have a big impact on your quality of life, especially if you're a senior or otherwise Medicare eligible. With the 5-star Special Enrollment Period underway through November, now is the time to consider whether your current plan provides the high-quality care and value of a 5-star Medicare health plan. To help Medicare beneficiaries understand why quality matters and what it means to their health, Kaiser Permanente, which has the most 5-star plans nationwide for 2013, is sharing information about a key area to consider when evaluating a Medicare planpreventive care. "Medicare members should select a plan that is proactive in helping them stay healthy and active as they age. They need to know if their plan does a good job preventing them from getting sick through screenings, vaccines and tests," said Jed Weissberg, M.D., medical director, Kaiser Permanente Medicare plans. "They also need to know how well their plan manages chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes." Kaiser Permanente scores well above the national average in preventive screenings. For example, only one in six traditional Medicare members16 percentused a free preventive service in 2011, according to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. By con-

trast, nearly 90 percent of eligible Kaiser Permanente Medicare members received breast cancer screenings, and nearly 88 percent received colorectal cancer screenings, as reported by the 2012 Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set, commonly known as HEDIS. Ratings matter, because if CMS rates a Medicare health plan 5 out of 5 stars, beneficiaries can feel confident about choosing the highest-quality plan available and join that plan almost any time of year. Learn more about the Medicare Star Quality Ratings and Kaiser Permanente's Medicare plans by visiting kp.org/medicare or by calling 1-855-8175831. Plan performance summary star ratings are assessed by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services each year and may change from one year to the next.
