Nicole Lopez October 3, 2013 WRD 103 Editorial on English Language Policies English has become one of the

most common languages not just in the United States but internationally, too. It seems as if English has become a trend since almost everyone wants to learn the language. To me, I believe English is important to learn but it is not vital. Being a citizen of the United States, I personally do not believe in making English the official language of this country. I have always seen the United States as a country with great diversity. Most people that reside in the United Sates were or are immigrants from all around the globe. Every individual came to this country to express him or herself whether it was through work or sharing their culture. My grandparents, from both sides of my family, all emigrated from Mexico to provide a better future for their children and they did. Once I spoke to them and asked them if they ever had felt like they did not fit in or if they just had a struggle they just could not over come. My grandparents told me they were okay financially, but they were not okay socially. They said this because English, at the time, was the main language spoken in the United States. My grandparents decided to make the situation better by learning the English language to make the adjusting easier; they do not have speak the most fluent English, but they do have enough knowledge with the language to get around the city and speak for themselves. My grandparents experience proves that learning the English language is not impossible. However, people come to the United States to avoid complications back in their native lands. I feel immigrants lives are much more

complicated when they arrive in America because no one understands them, and they do not comprehend well either. This is one of my main reasons why English should not be made the official language of the United States. Over the years, education all over the world has improved immensely. Third world countries, wealthy countries, and other countries have implied English into their students curriculum at school. This has been very helpful because children that are currently immigrating or those who are foreign exchange students will have an easy time transitioning to American lifestyle since English they have built up an English vocabulary. However, this is why English should not be the official language because the United States should be welcoming to these students and their families, too.
