Be a blessing to someone throughout the month of October. We plan to share blessings given/received on November 3rd in Sunday School “Do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others” (Philippians 2:4)

A grandfather had never flown. Eager to see his new granddaughter he called about flight times. “How long will it take to fly to London?” The operator was busy and said politely “Just a minute, please” The man hung up the phone astonished. ”Wow, that’s fast!” Our world has never been more busy and connected. Businesses are spending millions on satellites, cell phones, cameras that put us in touch. Yet I talk to people each week that tell me they are disconnected. Some are lonely by foolish choices, but mostly long for connection to others. They don’t want you to move in with them, but would enjoy a non-demanding but caring person in their life. Our fast moving lives have caused havoc on relationships. Yet the Bible is clear we were made for relationships. One of God’s first observations “It is not good for man to be alone.” Why is that so? Because we were created in the image of God. God is love. We are made to love. And to love, you got to have somebody to love. Encouraging relationships are the major component of our church Sunday School small groups. Sure, we teach the Bible and always will. But if that’s all we do, you might as well go online or watch a DVD. The real strength is in the relationship that you build. The loss of Ed Bowman is still being absorbed, but there is one principle I observed in all his ministry. He sought to bring people together for encouragement. In small Sunday School classes people studied and prayed together. In Food Service – people ate, talked laughed together. Senior Adults – They travelled together, sang together served together, they even played cards together (I pretended I didn’t see that one). The idea for the best program our church ever did came from Ed. He suggested “Better Together” as our fall Sunday School theme several years ago. Ed so believed in the importance of Christians being together, that he exhausted himself with effort after effort. He told me several times that he would rather “burn out than rust out. Well, he did better than either of those. He “served out” his life. In the Bible, God described our spiritual connection in several ways. We are like a building (Ephesians 2). We are a body (Romans 12). We are a family (1 Timothy 3:15) and there are others: a vine and a bride. Connection will continue to be a major focus at Eastmont. Your staff will make every effort to keep us connected as the Bible teaches. Why? Because we are better together. The “1001 Blessings” program was developed by Ed in order to connect us to others through blessings. Ed would not say he taught us anything sensational. He would humbly say I just encouraged you to do what the Bible said do: work together, walk together, worship together, witness together. By the way, Sunday, November 3, is our 1001 Blessings celebration in Sunday School. Ed expects you all to be there together in your Sunday School class.
