Import Well Data

Well Data Formats
Numerous types of well information can be loaded into a project. Well locations should be loaded first, followed by directional surveys, if any. All other types of well information can then be added in any order. The format for locations can be Tobin (*.wv2), IHS Energy (*.pid, *.wds), GeoGraphix (*.wbs), Landmark (*.asc), or GeoQuest (*.dat), or Charisma (*.wel). Specify the file type (proper file extension is required) and load the file. Since the vendors format is known, a minimum amount of user input is required. A generic format of columnar ASCII suffices for nearly all types of information. In addition to columnar ASCII, LAS or log files can also be readily loaded. In this section, different types of well data are loaded into a new project. In this tutorial, you learn how to: Import a columnar ASCII file for well locations Import a directional survey Apply a default time depth curve to all wells Bulk load formation tops for all wells using one file.

E X I T

Many of these files can be used to load information into a single well if desired.

IHS Energy Format

The industry standard for well data transfer in the United States is the IHS Energy format. Well data is stored in the IHS 97 format, production data is stored in IHS 98 format. The current versions of the formats are the IHS 97 and IHS298, which have been upgraded from the IHS 97 and IHS 98 formats. If you specify the IHS format, a wizard leads you through the loading process using the same dialog boxes presented in this tutorial, therefore this tutorial does not address the IHS format data separately.

KINGDOM 8.2

Tunnel L
KINGDOM allows transfer of well, fault, horizon, and survey data from a Landmark project to a KINGDOM project through a network connection (tunnel). This tunnel is accessible through Tools > Landmark Tunnel > Import. A wizard guides you through the loading process, therefore this tutorial does not address this tunnel option.

Create New Project

Before beginning this tutorial you need to create a new project. 1. From the KINGDOM Software main menu select Project > Create New Project. 2. Give the project a name and location path. For our purposes we will create a project called Data Importing. 3. The Author Name will be SMT. 4. In the Select Project Database dialog box, select from the options shown in Figure 1. If you are running a 32 Bit operating system, your choices are MS Access 97, MS Access 2000, Access 2003, or MS Access XP, depending upon your local operating system. Note: If you are running a 64 Bit operating system, your Database choices are limited to MS SQL Server and Oracle Project Manager.

Note: When Elevation is selected, KB (Kelly Bushing) elevation is loaded by default as the Elevation Reference. Elevation can be loaded with an elevation reference of DF (Derrick Floor) or GL (Ground Level) if an Elevation Reference column is provided on the import data sheet. If an Elevation Reference other than KB, DF or GL is specified, elevation will be imported as KB nevertheless. 8. Ignore any data to the right of the Completion Type Name in the data file. Import Time-depth Charts

Time-Depth (T-D) curves are named and classified as either Local or Shared. You can import a local T-D curve to each well and also apply a regional T-D curve to all the wells in an area. If desired, several regional T-D charts can be applied to any of the wells in the survey. KINGDOM 8.2

25

Import Time-depth Charts

We have just accomplished the task of importing a time-depth chart to the # 3: <Undefined>: 1111: SMT well. We have specified that the time-depth chart is Local to the well, meaning that the well owns the time-depth chart, or is the source for the time-depth chart. A Local time-depth chart may derive from a check-shot survey that was performed in the borehole, or may derive from a copy of a time-depth chart from another well. Nevertheless, a well becomes the owner of the time-depth chart after it is specified as Local. The subject time-depth chart is also specified as Active, meaning that positioning of objects (such as Formation Tops or Fault Cuts) in the time or depth domain will be based on the conversion values in the Active time-depth chart. A well can have more than one Local time-depth chart, or the well can have a mixture of Local and Shared time-depth charts, but only one of them can be Active at any one time. When an Active time-depth chart is changed, repositioning of objects in the time or depth domain will occur based on conversion values in the new time-depth chart. To expound further on the concept of a Shared time-depth chart, one can say that a time-depth chart or curve that is Shared is also shareable, meaning that the Shared time-depth chart becomes part of a pool of time-depth charts that can be shared or used by other wells. A Shared time-depth chart is not derived from the well to which it is assigned or applied. A Shared timedepth chart is not owned by the well to which it is assigned or applied. A Shared time-depth chart is owned by the project. A Shared time-depth chart is used to make time-to-depth and depth-totime conversions for objects such as Formation Tops or Fault Cuts in the well to which the Shared time-depth chart is assigned or applied.
