Brothels are now a common sight in town and the people engaged in various debauchery. Chayong took her own life due to the shame. gathering her courage Elsa subsequently resolved to tell the truth. The twist of fate however can be cruel on the fateful day where Elsa with her childhood friend and disciple Chayong was communing with the supposed apparition in the hill. After that Elsa subsequently found herself unable to heal anyone. 3|Page . she confides this to her mother and later on to the town’s priest however the latter dismissed her claims as delusions. covering the sky of the town of Cupang with darkness. by touching the man’s chest the man was suddenly healed of his ailment. who was at a hill at that time. some superstitious locals panic fearing that divine judgment is at hand amidst the commotion that was happening at the town a panicking desperately looks for her adoptive daughter Elsa.Summary The story starts with an eclipse. they were mercilessly ravaged by “beasts” their pleas of help from the divine fell into deaf ears and their innocence taken. however while Cupang is at the height of its prosperity the dark side of its progress was also revealed. while she was there she apparently saw an apparition of the blessed virgin Mary. Elsa’s first miracle happened in a blink of an eye. with the onset of Elsa’s miraculous healing activities. This very miracle set a chain of events that would change the lives forever of the people of Cupang. Cupang was also rejuvenated from being the barren and sleepy town it used to be to a bustling town due to influx of visitors seeking to be healed by Elsa’s miraculous touch. and the miracles dwells upon the hearts of the people but such revelation was met by tragedy. Returning home dismayed Elsa and her mother comes across with a man on the verge of dying due to a heart attack. that there was no miracle. where. an epidemic of cholera struck the town and in one instant Cupang found itself in the same way as before Elsa became miraculous.

The townsfolk believed that the drought they were having was a curse placed upon the town for ostracizing a sick man years ago. second is the fanaticism of the people in Elsa that they thought of her as the incarnation of a divine personality. Cupang has a dead landscape due to lack of rain as it was believed an effect of the curse. this was demonstrated during an eclipse in which the majority of the town panicked as they thought it was the end of the world. 6|Page . the people in cupang had been in such dry spell for so long which is why the local is stuck in poverty. The air of cupang is filled with superstitions. dead and a sleepy town with mediocre people. a community set in an arid landscape. this change to something more when the miracle happened. Before Elsa’s miracle occurred Cupang was nothing but an insignificant.SETTING The setting of the story is a small town named Cupang. however.
However unbeknownst to all a gun was already aimed at Elsa… Elsa was shot and this caused panic and hysteria among the people leaving may injured. there was miracle yet sin was all around it as various places of “relief” for the body was established.Conflict and Resolution As Cupang progressed some people took it as an opportunity to proliferate various business and enterprises which indeed stimulated the local economy however the mediocre people of Cupang eventually changed for the worse. Mrs. the events of tragedy rapidly pour in. ironically Elsa was not able to save the child of her own followers. the town became a sleazy place. a disease ravaged the town and killed many people including the child of one of the seven apostles. Sepa. Alba proclaimed Elsa as a saint…in which may seemed to be swayed leading to yet another episode of fanaticism among the people of Cupang. gathering her courage she instructed her remaining loyal followers to rally the people of Cupang and finally tell the truth that there was no apparition nor miracle. Not long Cupang experienced the cruel twist of fate. due to an “incident” on the hill Chayong hanged herself because of the shame and Elsa lost her miracle. 7|Page .
who is blamed and banished for her primacy in sin and death. 8|Page . She is put on a glorious pedestal and revered by the townsfolk. The characters of Nimia and Elsa challenge the traditional images of woman designated by patriarchy. Two women. there was no miracle. fire divine. One weaves magic. have mercy O how sacred How serene How benevolent How lovely. It may well be that the missing shades of redemption would have allowed the realization of Elsa and Nimia as women characters in the musical. When she asserts herself and defies this traditional archetype and stands in the fullness of the truth of her own person. the other works miracles. the temptress. But in the universe of Himala. he shall receive the crown of life O Lord.Literary Analysis The mouth of the just shall meditate wisdom And his tongue shall speak judgment Blessed is the man who endureth temptation For once he hath been proven. the temptress and the virgin. have mercy O how sacred How serene How benevolent How lovely. A glimmer of hope for women can be seen in Himala's "rule-breaking" approach. a brazen symbol of machismo. she is made to revert and be as she was. As Elsa prophesied in the musical’s riveting denouement--"walang himala" . she is exterminated by a bullet. O lily of purity O Lord. This particular Latin verse perfectly describes Elsa and in contrast her childhood friend and complete opposite the town’s harlot Nimia.. a prostitute. fire divine. When she breaks away from this mold and commits herself to life. Nimia is made to fit the mold. miracles for the flourishing of women remain elusive. She leaves Cupang exactly as she arrived.. O lily of purity. Elsa is made to fit the mold of the virgin.
