Solon wants Philippine tourist spots printed on postage stamps
A lawmaker wants to require the printing of postage stamps in different denominations, which depict tourism sites in the Philippines, in support of the drive to arouse international interest in the country’s tourist areas. Rep. Eric Olivarez (1st District, Parañaque City) filed House Bill 2417, mandating the Philippine Postal Service to cause the printing of postage stamps depicting Philippine tourist spots and require that these stamps be affixed on all outgoing mail matter. Olivarez said tourism is one of the anchor industries upon which the national government is relying on to attain the status of a newly industrialized country in Asia. “Tourism authorities in the world concede that the Philippines has an abundance of tourist areas of unspeakable beauty, some of them have been developed and others are already beautiful in their natural state,” Olivarez said. To further accelerate the country’s tourism promotion efforts with its campaign slogan, “It’s more fun in the Philippines,” Olivarez said it is necessary that the country makes known the existence of the famous tourists destinations in the country, arouse the interest of tourists about these areas and whet their appetite about the tourist spots’ extraordinary beauty. This can be done by means of postage stamps affixed on outgoing mail especially to foreign destinations, according to Olivarez. Olivarez said these stamps would depict tourist areas in the country and advertise these beautiful spots to foreign potential tourists without extra cost to the government. “Surely, this could trigger interest for more information about the tourist areas which our Department of Tourism (DOT) and Tourism Promotions Board can provide that would surely attract foreigners to visit the Philippines,” Olivarez said. Under the measure to be known as the “Philippine Tourism Stamp Act of 2013,” the Philippine Postal Corporation shall impose the requirement that the tourism stamps be printed and shall be affixed on all outgoing mail during a certain period of time. PhilPost shall enlist the assistance of the DOT and TPB in the identification, illustration and labeling of the tourist areas to be depicted in the postage stamps. The DOT and the TRB shall assist the Philippine Postal Service in the preparation of posters to be posted in strategic places in the country and in foreign countries in support of the international drive to promote the beauty of the Philippines. Budget allocation for the implementation of this Act shall be taken from the appropriations of the Philippine Postal Service. (30) lvc
