5.1

Ballast Water Planning

When to exchange ballast water

The need and extent of exchange of ballast water will be decided by the requirements of the next port(s) of arrival. It is important to refer to the Plan B of the Ballast Water Management Plan for this purpose. The ballast water exchange must be done to satisfy the more stringent of the requirements given in Plan A and Plan B. Due regard shall be given to the safety considerations prior and during such exchange.

5.2

Warnings concerning ballast water uptakes

5.2.1 Certain Port states may notify the ship by whatever means possible, of areas under their jurisdiction, where the ships should not uptake ballast water due to known conditions which may result in the uptake of harmful aquatic organisms and pathogens or are near sewage outfalls etc. The Master and/or the Ballast water Management Officer shall clearly receive the co-ordinates of such areas. 5.2.2 The uptake of ballast water should be minimized and, where practicable, avoided in areas and situations such as: 5.2.2.1 areas identified by the port state in connection with advice as mentioned above (port state may inform local agents and / or the ships of areas where the uptake of ballast water should be minimized or avoided); 5.2.2.2 in darkness when bottom-dwelling organisms may rise up in the water column; 5.2.2.3 in very shallow waters; or 5.2.2.4 the water is stirred up by propellers or dredging. 5.2.2.5 near sewage outfalls. 5.2.2.6 areas where toxic algae blooms are occurring. 5.2.3 In case ballast has been taken in under such circumstances, the Master shall ensure that this ballast is exchanged as far away from nearest land as possible and in as deep waters as possible.
