Arcade Fires fourth studio release is an ambitious 75-minute double record that sees the Canadian troupe rejuvenate the tension-lled, call-to-arms grandeur of their back catalogue in a different light. Its lush, long and expertly blends various genres in a fresh and exotic manner, and is a feat partly owed to the recording background of the album. Haitian rara festival music, the 1959 lm Black Orpheus (an adaptation of the Greek myth of Oprheus and Eurydice set against a carnival in Rio de Janerio) and Danish philosopher Soren Kiekegaards essay The Present Age inuenced the song writing and sonic avour of the album. Already screaming an intimidating concept record, James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem/DFA Records) was enlisted as producer and the writing and recording was done at an abandoned Jamaican mansion. Its a mouth full, and on paper it doesnt seem possible. But Arcade Fire have managed to press the reset button without forfeiting their indie strengths or experimental street-cred. A grand risk with an equally grand pay-off. From the seven minute album opener and lead single Reektor, we are thrust into a groove-driven record that ows effortlessly with an indie-dance-hybrid twitch; from textured disco beats and post-punk guitars, to dense synths and spacerock ambience, it owes a few nods to David Bowie (who makes a cameo appearance) and Curtis Mayeld. While the exaggerated emotional weight held their back catalogue,

here the unifying factor is the exotic rhythm section that truly does pop with an infectious shufe. Live recordings of a Haitian carnival are heard at the beginning of Here Comes The Night Time, a standout track that captures the joy in breaking genre conventions, and is an idea revisited throughout the record. On highlight Normal Person, Butler asks Do you like rock and roll music? and replies cause I dont know if I do, right before the albums loudest mosh-worthy guitar breaks through, like a punk version of The Velvet Underground and The Rolling Stones combined. Its a tting statement considering Reektors greatest moments are the warped disco-stutter gone acoustic gem in Its Never Over (Oh Orpheus), the stadium sized Joan Of Ark and the soaring Afterlife complete with brass and choirs. This is Arcade Fire having fun and revelling in a newfound appreciation of music and culture. Reektor bursts with carnival liveliness, and while the pace slows a little on the second disc and a few tracks feel out of place, these are small complaints overshadowed by an album that will richly reward with each listen.

THU 07 NOV
THANKS FOR SHARING
GENERAL RELEASE
With Iron Man 3 having demonstrated that a post-Avengers movie focusing on only one superhero can still be a heck of a lot of fun, it now falls upon Thor: The Dark World to reinforce that point. While this blockbuster never quite reaches the giddy heights of the unexpectedly awesome Iron Man 3, its still a perfectly enjoyable exercise in superheroics, and much more fun to watch than Man of Steel. Advance word promised more of Asgard this time around and, even more so than the rst lm, Thor: The Dark World qualies as a space-bound adventure. There are awesome space ships, aliens (of sorts) and a number of different worlds. The relationship between Thor and Natalie Portmans Jane is re-engaged after having been ignored for The Avengers and it once again provides the emotional thrust of the movie. The lm suffers for the familiarity of its Macgufn - it is yet ANOTHER innitely powerful weapon that could destroy the universe. But the guy who wants to wield it - a dark elf played by Christopher Eccleston - feels relatively original. Tom Hiddlestons Loki is often described as a fan favourite, but I, for one, am getting tired of his smirky shenanigans. Plus the lm fails to come up with anything interesting for Thors band of merry men to do - they were one of the best parts of the rst lm. Director Alan Taylor - a Games of Thrones veteran - doesnt display Thor helmer Kenneth Branaghs talent for creatively-staged action or tilty camera-work, but he steps up to the task of lending everything the requisite gravitas. I felt a little action starved in the rst half, but Thor: The Dark World perks up considerably in the nal third. It may lack the surprise of the rst lm, but Marvel Studios is still making the best superhero movies around.

GOLDINGS FREE DIVE

14 LEEDS ST

Beer is love is the message here. Taking inspiration from the US dive bar, Goldings pays homage to the neighbourhood bars of North America and Europe. With craft beer being the most important ingredient for a night out, Goldings brings together the textures, feel and energy of its central city environment and creates a truly sincere and unique experience. Goldings friendly, highly trained and knowledgeable staff are here to make the most of your visit and make sure you get the most out of your time spent exploring New Zealand and international craft beers. And never fear theres cider and spirits to please all.

THE DOGS BOLLIX

2 NEWTON RD

The Dogs Bollix has been an institution for as long as we can remember. And why is it so great? Well, number one, it has incredible live music shows of some great up and coming Kiwi bands and international hits. Top that off with a beer in your hand and no doubt youll have a swing in your step as the night goes on.

Youve just been crowned Beam Bar Legend for 2013 - how does it feel? Amazing! This competition really challenges you in every aspect of bartending. It has been intense but certainly worth it. What did you do? A lot of hard work and practice. I spent weeks practicing my speech for the presentation round It was my worst round last year and I was determined to prove myself this year. What was your highlight of Beam Bar Legend 2013? There were six rounds in the grand nal, which was spread over a two-day period. Out of the six, round three was my favourite. We all had to create a drink that would match a dish as part of a 6-course degustation menu. We then had to make it 44 times and have it come out at the same time as the dish. This truly challenged us but my favourite part of this round was how all the competitors worked together to help get our drinks out perfect and on time. It was an amazing show of teamwork and sportsmanship. Whats your signature drink and how

TONIC
138 PRINCES ST

do we make it? To Galliano: equal parts (30ml) Galliano Lautentico, Sauza Hornitos and Cinzano Blanco.5ml of Laphroaig stir and then pour over cubed ice into a rocks glass. Garnish with a lemon wheel and Rosemary sprig. Youve just won a prize pack valued at $25,000 which included a trip to a Beam distillery of your choice - where are you going to go and why? The Jim Beam distillery in America I have been to 100s of training sessions and one of my favourites was held by Fred Noe (the current Jim Beam master distiller). I think it would be amazing to see the man in his element! If you have one tip for bartenders wanting to become Beam Bar Legend 2014 - what would it be? Practice and be yourself Beam Bar Legend want your personality to come through as much as your skill. You need to practice a lot so that you can be as comfortable as possible in each round.

Whats your tonic? Theres a wine list to tempt you and an award-winning, locally brewed Emersons to tease you. Theres special releases direct from the brewery, such as Brewers Reserves and seasonal release beers.

CALL OF DUTY IS a legitimate phenomenon; the series - which rst appeared in 2003 - has been smashing records and setting near indomitable sales targets this entire console generation. It is, in other words, something of a big deal. It was with much interest, then, that I sat down with this years iteration: Call of Duty: Ghosts. Within the Call of Duty franchise, there exist other sub-brands, like Modern Warfare or Black Ops. Ghosts, if youre unaware of it, is a brand new entry in the series, and stars a completely new cast of characters. The basic story is that, in the near future, oil runs dry, leading to the collapse of the worlds existing superpowers. The power vacuum that results is swiftly lled by an unexpected sector (a conglomerate of South American nations, essentially) and war is the result. On the brink of being wiped out, a band of American super-soldiers must ght back and save the day. This all plays out in the games singleplayer campaign, which is - as usual - largely forgettable. There are some great set pieces in here, though, with underwater ghts, a great sequence on top of a crazy future-train, the ability to y around in a helicopter (and drive a tank), as well as - believe it or not - levels set in space. Its fun stuff. Where Call of Duty excels is in the multiplayer. Rather than attempt simulation, CoD has always been about delivering killer gameplay - even if that means reality takes a back seat. This is further underlined in Ghosts, with the addition of a number of new multiplayer modes - all of which are more game than sim. One of the recently revealed options is the all-new Extinction mode. Here, solo or with up to three others, you must traverse a destroyed town, placing drills on alien hives while defending said drill from waves of increasingly powerful aliens. Similar in some ways to the Zombies mode that appeared in the Black Ops games, youll need to work with your friends to survive; fortunately you can improve your skills and specialize in certain ways to improve the odds, and the options available

really do make a meaningful difference. Expect this one to be popular once the game is available. In more traditional multiplayer modes, theres still plenty of innovation to keep the experience fresh and interesting. One of the best is Search & Rescue, in which players must alternate between attacking and defending key objectives - much like Search & Destroy in previous Call of Duty games. The twist here is that, like in Kill Conrmed, players drop dog-tag tokens on death. If you collect the token of a fallen teammate, theyll respawn; collect an enemys token, and theyll be forced to sit out the rest of the round. Its a clever twist on the existing mechanics, and results in a much deeper gameplay experience than you might expect. Grind was another of the new modes that I really liked. Similar to a mod for Tribes 2 called Flag Hunters, you collect dog tags from fallen combatants but must bank them in a communal scoring zone for you to earn any points. This ensures that the action is hectic and focused, and signicantly changes the feel from more traditional death match games. Dying when youve got a dozen tags, knowing that banking them would have put you in the lead, is intense. Theres also Hunted (you only have basic guns, but extras spawn in from time to time, creating a whole series of gameplay opportunities), Blitz (entering an opponents goal scores your team a point), and Cranked (you have to keep killing or you die), which helps keep the basic run and gun gameplay feeling fresh throughout. It didnt look particularly next gen (whatever that means) for a PlayStation 4 title, but it sure was a hell of a lot of fun. If you like your Call of Duty, and dont mind the single player not continuing in the innovative vein of Black Ops II, Ghosts is absolutely worthy of your time and attention when it releases this week. Theres even a $10 upgrade option, so you can buy it for your current console now, then get a cheap copy for your next-gen console later. Recommended.

BATMAN: ARKHAM ORIGINS

XBOX 360, PS3
Arkham Origins might be the third in the Arkham series (following on from 2011s Arkham City), but it tells - as the title suggests - a tale from earlier in the caped crusaders career, when Batman was rst emerging from the bat-cave. Combat ows much as it did in previous games and gliding works the same as well; even Gotham itself is the same as it was in Arkham City. Of course, none of the buildings are run down, and the streets arent ooded, but that just makes it cooler. Previous players can come into the game knowing roughly their way around the map, or you can use the Batwing to fast-travel from one side to the other. Nasty villain E. Nigma (wholl be known as the Riddler later, of course) is up to no good, and Black Mask - a sadistic mobster with a mask stuck to his face - has put out a bounty on Batman. Eight of the worlds best assassins have one night to kill the newly emerged hero and net themselves a lot of money. These eight are the bosses youll encounter, and their ghts are much better than the ones from the previous game. Beyond the eight assassins, there are a number of supervillains up to no good in Gotham (at one point, Batman growls why tonight? when he learns of yet another new crime.) The Rogues gallery is much wider this time around, even with repeats like (a much younger looking) Killer Croc and Penguin. You can also play as Deathstroke, if only in the challenge maps. Of course, there are differences too. Batman is angrier. A younger Batman, hes naturally more hotheaded and determined to make a mark. He wants to run out and meet the assassins head on, ignoring the pleas of Alfred (as usual.) Theres a bunch of cool new gadgets that will take veteran players a while to master, but youll soon be attaching bad guys to explosives and being the lethal unseen predator we all know and love. Its got a lot to live up to, and it gets close to delivering on that lofty ambition. While the lack of creepy weirdness the earlier games had harms it, its still well worth a play.

BATTLEFIELD 4
PS4, XBOX 360, XBOX ONE, PC, PS3
I had Grizz dead in my sights, poised with a steady M98B. I was about to place some sugar on the trigger when... I get knifed in the back by NobodyEpicinBed. I watch as he then gets run over by a tank during his celebratory leaping dance. Meanwhile, a heli ies overhead and rains down death on a nearby building, which crumbles into dust, producing a triple kill from those caught unaware inside. Off in the distance, I see a guy parachuting out of a jet, ring an RPG at a rival vehicle on the ground. He nails it and lands effortless next to its burning wreckage... Fans of the Battleeld franchise will know there are countless epic moments like this to be had online. And EAs latest Battleeld 4 extends this to a whole new, chaotic level that is guaranteed to impress now that its nally available. There are a number of factors that make Battleeld one of the best online shooters on the market. While the action is intense, the game also grounds itself with an immersive level of realism that encapsulates the true horror (and adrenaline surge) of being in the middle of a chaotic war-zone. The much touted levolution (a dynamic, destructive physics engine) is in full effect, and it creates a whole new gaming experience with every session. With levolution, anyone playing can drastically alter the environment via a number of ways, such as triggering explosions or turning on switches. For example you could bring down a wall that then opens up new areas of play while restricting others, or block roads with rubble and prevent vehicles from accessing certain areas. Or nullify the effectiveness of vehicles altogether. The extent of this real-time destruction is massive - we saw entire cities being ooded (removing the threat of tanks and causing those on foot to seek higher ground) and huge buildings collapsing onto unwitting combatants below. Battleeld is a multiplayer game at heart. It excels in human-on-human warfare and this latest title perfects the formula. The game also includes a relatively decent single player campaign, which clocks in at around ve hours and offers a number of memorable set-pieces along the way, but most will buy it for the multiplayer and theyll be getting a hell of a deal. Recommended.

EA ENDS RELATIONSHIP WITH TIGER WOODS

EA have released details about whats next in their long-running series of golf games, including the news that it wont be called Tiger Woods PGA Tour XX. In fact, it wont include the Tiger Woods name at all, as the company and the embattled golf champion have parted company. EA SPORTS and Tiger Woods have made a mutual decision to end our partnership, the company explained, which includes Tigers named PGA TOUR golf game. Weve always been big fans of Tiger and we wish him continued success in all his future endeavors. That doesnt mean the end for the series, however - something else the company was keen to stress. Moving forward, EA explained, we will continue to work with the PGA TOUR exclusively to create groundbreaking golng titles and our partnership remains strong. Tiger Woods has been associated with EA Sports golng franchise since Tiger Woods PGA Tour 99, which released in 1998. EA promise to reveal more information about the next game in the series soon.

BLACK REBEL MOTORCYCLE CLUB

ThIS NoVeMber SeeS the return of one of the hippest, dark rock outts to come out of LA. Originally formed in 98 as The Elements, bassist Robert Levin Been and guitarist Peter Hayes (previously of the Brian Jonestown Massacre) envisaged a darkly fuzzed-up, blissed out mess of a pop outt when they created Black Rebel Motorcycle Club in their dying days of high school. The band name comes from Marlon Brandos gang in 1953s The Wild One rival gang, The Beetles, was already taken. With drummer Nick Jago completing the trio they set about creating what Hayes now calls two nasty hard rock albums (referring to B.R.M.C and Take Them On, On Your Own.) We were heavily inuenced by Led Zep back then. Talking to him on the phone at his LA home, Hayes sounds relaxed, possibly too relaxed. I ask him about the early days of the band, tentatively skirt around Beens family tragedy and enquire politely about the bands contribution to Dave Grohls Sound City soundtrack. Early inuences, he yawns, Well maybe The Verve, Sonic Youth, a bit of Dinosaur Jr, The Jesus and Mary Chain. Still hes quick to dismiss all that, reminding me that they also stole sounds from bits of psychedelic rock, space rock and noise pop. The whole conversation is a bit of a tangent. Id noted from the rap sheet that the band had taken the opportunity to record on Dave Grohls recently acquired Neve 8028 mixing desk as part of his Sound City movie project. We recorded our rst album there, on that board (in 2001). Recording this time was like shaking hands with a ghost. Sure its a magic thing. Im sure there were a lot of famous recordings made there (everything from Fleetwood Macs Rumours to Nirvanas Nevermind). But theres plenty of bands you never heard of thatve been through there, too, dont forget The recording of (Grohls soundtrack opener) Heaven and All (which included Been, Hayes and Grohl on drums) was particularly memorable; like picking up an old guitar because the desk, it becomes a xed instrument in the studio, and it has this ability to create exactly all the colours you need, bright, dark or nothing at all. Colours, theyve varied over this bands career. In 2003 a concert in Leeds was cancelled due to dodgy ooring, earning them the rep as the band that broke the oor. But the band really did break after the release of Howl, when Hayes walked out of 2004s V festival refusing to sign an inatable penis, and then feuding with drummer Nick Jago, who quit in the early stages of recording. Jago returned during the sessions for Baby 81 (2007) in which the band consolidated their current blues/folk angst rock sound. Yet by 2009 Jago was out again, being replaced by Ravonettes drummer Leah Shapiro when on tour. The band claimed Jago was never really red. Still they themselves were unemployed, enduring record company changes and chose to release their all instrumental work The Effects of 333 independently as a digital download. Notoriety was gained when Done All Wrong from their next release appeared on the New Moon soundtrack, the rst of many contributions to the motion picture industry, which has included tracks in Batman: Arkham City (Shadow on the Run) and Need for Speed (Beat the Devils Tattoo) plus plenty of TV projects. Tragedy struck, too when in Belgium whilst touring 2010s Beat The Devils Tattoo, Beens father and long term sound engineer suffered a fatal heart attack. The eventual album Spector at the Feast, released in January 2013 is a mass wall of cathartic sound. Playing music is always a kind of therapy. When at its best, its a kind of medicine. At least I want to believe it. And there we were - back at the doctors, quips Hayes referring to their extended visit to Grohls Studio 606, the new home of the aforementioned Neve board and the location for much of the new album. A return, of sorts and a completion in the circle-of-life. Speaking of which, Hayes pipes up, snapping me out of my ponderings, You guys owe us a meal on the beach. The last time we were in Auckland I heard a rumour that the record company were thinking of taking us down to the water for a BBQ. Apparently, thats what they do when artists are touring but someone said No, those guys are too dark and moody. They wouldnt like that! Well, when Im down there I want my brew on the sand. Yeah?
