Assignment One: For assignment one I decided to observe my internship with the Athletics Department specifically working with

h the Marketing Department. With this job we have monthly meetings, handle all game operation activities and promotions for the athletic teams here at UNC Charlotte. These observations will take you through meetings and game day operations. Interview: 1. What is your position with Athletics/Operations? Assistant Director of Marketing, I manage and handle all of the ideas and operating of the athletic events here at UNC Charlotte. 2. Was this something youve always known you wanted to do with your life? How did you receive this position and get to where you are now? When I first started college I really just wanted to play soccer but once I got out of that phase and my parents told me I needed to start to get into something and decide what I wanted to do I knew I had a love for sports so I began to intern with the athletics department and eventually I had received responsibilities like being in charge of games and I fell in love and knew that this was the career path I wanted to take. 3. What are the disadvantages to working this job? What are the advantages? The main disadvantages of this job is that you dont have much free time because you just get so involved and theyre typically a game almost every night and weekend. There are many more advantages to this job than disadvantages though. I love what I do and the people I work with. We are all a really big family. 4. Do you maintain relationships with your coworkers and peers outside of the office? Yes! We are all really close we often get together outside of work and get our families together and have barbeques together so we are pretty comfortable with one another. 5. Is this you stopping point? Are you looking to progress in your career or are you content with where you are right now in your career? Im sure in the future Im going to want something more but right now Im really happy with where Im at. This school is growing so fast and Ive only been in this position for maybe 6 months. I want to see what more it has to offer and then maybe Ill think about trying out new things. But right now Im really enjoying myself. Observation 1: August 20, 2013 Time: 5:00pm-5:30pm Description of the Location: Monthly meetings conference room on the second floor of the SAC (Student Activities Center) in the marketing and media department it has about a table with 10 conference chairs and a flat tv screen.

Figured World: A figured world is an environment where people share the same rules, conventions, and manners. This figured world may not be what others expect. Although there is a lot of responsibility the actors in this figured world are very laid back and make it a less intense environment. Some conventions in this figured world is that although you are a student and worker and support UNC Charlotte, you are still a representative for the school and at athletic events you must act appropriate and not cheer against the other teams, yell at the refs, or get to into the game and forget about your responsibilities. Some games are very slow and some are very fast paced. To add onto this, the meetings are very informal and not very long at all. Actors: Actors are the people who influence the figured worlds and some actors play more important roles than others and set the standards of what the rules and conventions are in the figured world. I have chosen people from all different positions in this figured world. -Josh: Josh is the Director of Marketing, very nice and really easy to get along with. He has a strong sense of humor but he also knows when and how to be serious. Josh comes to most of the athletic events but not all of them. He carries a lot of trust in his employees. During football games he stays up in the press box and gives the ques to everyone on when they are supposed to do what according to the script. -Ashley: Ashley is the one who is in charge of everyone down on the fields and makes sure everything runs smoothly for Josh. Ashley has a good sense of humor as well but dont get on her bad side or she will give you a hard time for the rest of your life. Ashley often gets in fights with Norm because Norm thinks he knows everything. She does a great job at what she does because shes not afraid to tell people when they are in the wrong. Which can get inappropriate sometimes but she means well with everything she does. Ashley is also the advisor for SMA. -Arron: Arron is the President of SMA- Sports Marketing Association, which is a student organization that consists of students that help out with the Athletics Marketing Department with these game operations. Arron is very conceded and thinks hes the best thing thats ever walked this planet and just talks about all of the girls he gets every weekend. He walks around the stadium with his chest high and acts like he owns the place, hes also very sarcastic. He is very opinionated and will do anything to prove you wrong. But for the most part he is very nice and as long as you dont insult him he will make you feel welcomed. -Brett: Brett is a country, southern soul who is a UNC Charlotte fanatic. He loves his school and has a ton of spirit. Very easy going and doesnt take too many things seriously. Hes a little on the weird side, weird being air headed like. Hes not very quick with his reactions and often says dumb statements. But he always gets the job done with out any complaints.

-Julie: Julie is the Vice President of SMA. She is also the flirt. She talks or has talked to at least 2 guys from all the athletic teams here at UNC Charlotte. So she is always perky at the games and is in a great mood. She is very refreshing to be around because her attitude is so contagious. She rarely speaks bad about anyone and is always ready to help others. Arron likes to make fun of her a lot and make digs at her about how she talks to nothing but athletes, but she really doesnt mind she actually laughs and cant deny anything because pretty much everything he says is true. -Kristin: Kristin is also an officer in SMA, she mostly works as the social media person and does as much as she can for Aaron and Julie if they cant attend the games. Kristin is also Aarons cousin so you often see them bicker back and forth. Kristin is a sports fanatic, her phone goes off every 2 minutes with ESPN Updates. She is roomates and bestfriends with Julie so they often tag along together a lot. Sometimes Kristin gets a little annoyed with Julie with all of her guys and Julie likes to go out sometimes but Kristin is often reluctant to do those types of things because she is somewhat self-conscious about her body because she isnt petite like Julie. Kristin often takes her job pretty seriously as well but for the most part she lightens up because of Julie and the rest of the SMA crew. -Interns: the interns work with SMA but they technically work under Josh and Ashley. They do everything SMA does. Although, theres some responsibilities that the Interns have that SMAers dont, and vise versa. -Jenny: Jenny, is really nice. However, she tends to believe that all of these athletes are into her when they really arent paying her any attention to her. She often likes to goof around which can get frustrating when game situations get more serious. Along with fooling around, since shes so into herself she likes to take a lot of pictures of herself which distracts her of getting a job done and she always finds time to act up when Josh is around which is a time where you want to be impressing him because he is rarely around. -Amanda: Amanda is friends with everyone, she likes to act like she has a more important job than what she really has so she sometimes takes her tasks seriously and gets upset when she gets petty tasks but shes really nice and gets along with pretty much everyone and her mind is always running a mile a minute because shes involved with so many things. You could also consider Amanda as a bootlicker, she likes to impress people especially Josh and Ashley on her work ethics and skills for her age. Discourse Communities: These are communities that often work and communicate with each other the most, in other words a clique -SMA: although the SMA team works with everyone they still are considered their own group and have their own meetings with their club and talk about things that

not everyone knows about it and that may pertain to their separate meetings they have with Ashley. -Interns: the interns often gather together when they are assigned to a different tasks and have different responsibilities other than the others. Some like to think the Interns are a little bit higher up but some of the SMAers have been around a little bit longer and have a better relationship with Ashley and Josh which makes some interns envious. The Observation: This meeting is for Ashley to welcome everyone back to school and to get everyone excited about the upcoming year filled with athletics! Especially with football coming she emphasized what to expect for this year. All who attended this meeting: Amanda, Julie, Brett, Aaron, Kristin, and Jenny. We began by discussing what we did during our summers. Many of us had summers filled with internships and jobs and some just relaxed. We also included what we are involved in for the upcoming academic year. Next, we moved into our availability for the year and what events we were able to make. Finally, Ashley presented a power point on the new stadium facilities and which areas will be important areas and where our main focus, attention, and goal will be for the Inaugural Games. After all of that information was settled we just caught up on lost time individually. Observation 2: August 31, 2013 Time: 7:00am-4:00pm Description of the Location: The location is at the Jerry Richardson Football Stadium at UNC Charlotte. This stadium was built in 2011-2012 and opened August 31, 2013. The capacity of this stadium is about 16,000 people. The dimensions are 360 by 160 feet, in other words 25 acres. The areas that will be mentioned are the ticketing office, which is where the marketing table is placed. Another place that will be mentioned a lot is a place we like to call Home Base which is a tunnel area down on the field in the corner where we place all of our promotions and supplies are placed during the game, this location also is right on the field where we will be next to all of the action. Artifacts: tangible items that is significant with certain actors. -Credentials: The credentials are passes that allow everyone down on to the field, in the press box, ticket office, in and out of the stadium, everywhere. If you dont have a pass then you cant get very far.

-Walkie Takies: The walkie talkies are probably the most important pieces in the events of games because it helps everyone communicate through out the whole event without having to run to where ever they are, you can just get an immediate answer and you look very official when you have one. -Scripts: The script is the bible for us working the game. It basically has the whole event broken down by the minute and lets everyone know what will be happening and when it will happen and who will be doing what. Discourse Communities: These are communities that often work and communicate with each other the most, in other words a clique -SMA: although the SMA team works with everyone they still are considered their own group and have their own meetings with their club and talk about things that not everyone knows about it and that may pertain to their separate meetings they have with Ashley. -Interns: the interns often gather together when they are assigned to a different tasks and have different responsibilities other than the others. The Observation: Today is the first football game for the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Everyone must arrive at the field at 7am. Everyone must meet in front of the ticketing office Everyone finally gathers around and we are standing in a big circle, everyone shares their name, major, and an interesting fact about themselves. Ashley and Josh arrives thanks everyone for helping them out on this big day and lets everyone know the expectations for the day. They say that its going to be hot, hectic, and exhausting but fun so to enjoy ourselves and just remember our responsibilities. The football team will be taking their walk from the Union at 9:49 so that everyone can see them. We all go down to the tunnel to help get boxes, walkie talkies, tshirt toss guns, and to set everything out so that we know where everything is. The marketing table gets set up, we talk around and put promotions at all of the windows to the concession stands, and finally we walk around to make sure if any other department needs help with anything. Once we make sure everyone is ok, we all meet at the tunnel to get all of our responsibilities through out the game. Everyone receives a script and sees their responsibilities. (Attach script) For the beginning of the game: SMAers are in charge of handing out programs at all of the gates.

Jenny and Amanda are in charge of handling the drumline, dancers, and cheerleaders. Kristin and Julie are in charge of getting the coin tossers and national anthem people Aaron and Brett are in charge of the bell ringer and Norm as well as the ROTC men who are in charge of the football field goal kick and running of the flags for touchdowns. For the first half of the game: Julie and Amanda are in charge of being the AAA girls to come help Norm fix his car (time out promotion) Second Half Amanda is in charge of finding two people to be in charge of the Chick Fil A hamster ball run for the TV timeout. Everyone is in charge of the halftime tshirt toss. Jenny, Julie, and Amanda are with the sling shot. Ashley and Kristin are in charge of a tshirt gun. Brett has his own gun and Aaron has his own gun. Ending Game Everyone is in charge of helping get everything together and ready for clean up. Everyone must go get all of the promotions around the concession stands, carry the extra boxes of promotions to the tunnel and make sure the tunnel is cleaned .
