How Do You Really Perceive Images?

How do you really perceive images? Today in our generation we are growing up with media and images in every direction we look. Books today force students to find meaning which can either mislead or create a gap in the enjoyment of the story. Students should not be required to read Macbeth; because media brings consistent imaging, we can be de-familiarized to images, and students know more than enough about meaning. Media has been with us for more than enough time. I believe media can be valued just as much as it can be hated. In the article Changing the news: The Necessity of Visual Literacy in the ELA Classroom (By: Chris Gilbert) he states “Students find themselves situated within landscapes characterized by the over whelming presence of images” (Gilbert, 89). I think it would offset our learning and slow us down in our progression. It’s hard enough doing work without it being something that the students don’t all like. In the same article he also said “This is significant because the image possesses incredible metaphoric force” (Gilbert, 90). The media has the power to allow us to learn 100% faster. Magazines for example provide great metaphoric force which students can understand. Another reason I believe students shouldn’t have to read Macbeth is because students can b defamiliarized to images. In the article Changing the news: The Necessity of Visual Literacy in the ELA Classroom (By: Chris Gilbert) he states “Familiarity collapses the distance necessary for critique” (Gilbert, 90). Today’s media may have desensitized us, but I don’t believe that this is our fault. I think if you want this prefect censored media the school should be the ones to provide that instead of someone else. He later goes on to say “There are many ways to directly involve students in the study of images” (Gilbert, 92). Just like we can be de-sensitized we can be re-sensitized. Teachers can make students do assignments wit media to forcefully break it down for them to teach them the real meanings behind things. My final reason I think students shouldn’t have to read Macbeth is because I believe students know more than enough about meaning already. In the article Changing the news: The Necessity of Visual Literacy in the ELA Classroom (By: Chris Gilbert) he says “I define visual literacy as the ability to comprehend the image as a constructed medium inscribed with multiple narratives that inform identity” (Gilbert, 89). Students know visual literacy we just need teachers to test us then work off what we already know. Today’s fiction allows us to comprehend identity and unreal things. He goes on to say “Most students are so familiar with images that they instantly absorb the messages contained within them” (Gilbert, 90). Students are so underestimated that people forget that half this media exists to help us. A great story should and will usually have an equal or greater movie that conveys meaning in realistic scenarios.
