Upper Fremont Glacier is in the Fitzpatrick Wilderness of Shoshone National Forest in the U.S. state of Wyoming.[2] This Wind i!

er ange alpine glacier is associated "ith the largest gro#ping of glaciers in the U.S. ocky $o#ntains and lies on the north slope of Fremont %eak& the third tallest mo#ntain in Wyoming. Upper Fremont Glacier is at an a!erage altit#de of '(&)*+ ft ,)&'++ m- and is one the highest altit#de glaciers in the .merican ockies.[(] /ce core samples "ere taken from Upper Fremont Glacier in '00+1'00'. These ice cores "ere analyzed for climatic changes as "ell as alterations of atmospheric chemicals. /n '002 an #n3roken ice core sample of *(2 ft ,'4) m- "as taken from the glacier and s#3se5#ent analysis of the ice sho"ed an a3r#pt change in the o6ygen isotope ratio o6ygen1'2 to o6ygen1'4 in con7#nction "ith "hat is "idely regarded as the end of the 8ittle /ce .ge& a period of cooler glo3al temperat#res 3et"een the years '**+ and '2*+.[(] . linkage "as esta3lished "ith a similar ice core st#dy "hich had 3een #ndertaken on the 9#elccaya /ce :ap in %er#& "hich also demonstrated the same changes in the o6ygen isotope ratio d#ring the same period. The Upper Fremont Glacier ice core sho"ed a spike in (4:l from '04+s n#clear testing.

.mo#nt of atmospheric merc#ry deposited at Wyoming;s Upper Fremont Glacier o!er the last 2<+ years /ce cores from the glacier also sho"ed increased le!els of Triti#m ,(=- and chlorine1 (4 aro#nd the year '04(& "hich coincides "ith the peak period of a3o!e gro#nd n#clear testing.[(] The same ice cores "ere also tested for $erc#ry deposition from nat#ral and h#man1 ind#ced acti!ities. This is the first kno"n instance in "hich ice cores ha!e 3een #sed to determine $erc#ry deposition from a mid1latit#de glacier in North .merica& as all pre!io#s st#dies ha!e 3een deri!ed from other so#rces.[*] The ma7ority of $erc#ry deposition is 3y "ay of the atmosphere and so#rces of the element may 3e from !olcanic acti!ity or from ind#strialization& 3#t !olcanoes contri3#te a small proportion of the $erc#ry. The ice core samples from the Upper Fremont Glacier indicated that le!els of $erc#ry increased dramatically d#ring the ind#strial re!ol#tion and ha!e decreased significantly since the mid1'02+s. /t is 3elie!ed that the decrease in $erc#ry deposition since the '02+s coincides "ith the passage of the :lean .ir .ct.
