A prince created from the prayers and wishes of Voodoo

followers. His appearance is that of a living Voodoo doll

(gris-gris doll). His age is unknown. Due to his unnatural appearance and nature, he resides and moves through only the most secluded areas.

As a living gris-gris, he may use himself to bless or curse

others but it is more common for him to use his own dolls

that decorate his many rooms and tunnels. It is thought that he has a doll for every human on the planet. He is immune to gris-gris curses made by others.

The first appearance of the prince was recorded in Haiti, although it is not known exactly when. He has no family and

no confirmed name, amongst villages he is often referred to

by different names of spirits or gods of the Voodoo religion, depending on whom each family pray to. It is rare for anyone to have seen the Prince, in most instances where his presence is known it is most commonly noticed through sound, either the clicking of his pins, rustling or repeatedly

snapping sticks (most likely the minor parts of his own body).

The prince still currently resides somewhere in Haiti but has been known to appear anywhere that there is a strong Voodoo influence.

For this project I first researched Voodoo on it’s own, having not known much about it at all. I then looked at the different variations of Voodoo and it’s many origins before choosing to focus mainly on the Haitian variation with only small influences from the New Orleans (American) version.

Despite finding out about the use of Gris-Gris dolls for mainly blessings, I decided to keep the idea of curses along with the blessings when thinking of my character, I then tried to channel this mixture of dark and light into the lair itself. I kept the rich, bright tones and colours of the decorative altars and offerings whilst adding earthy, natural and possibly dull contrasts to show the rural and secluded location of the lair.

I aim to give the lair an unkept but somewhat regal look, focusing on the idea of a mixture of dark and light along with the idea of the Prince being hidden away.

This is my first attempt at production art for my secret lair. I will need to rework the proportions and perspective, most likely

pulling back to give the lair more room, as well as clean up some of the lines. I also plan to work with a few different settings before deciding if I want to use this one.

For my hero prop I continued my research into Voodoo, this time focusing on the dolls themselves and the altars used during religious Voodoo ceremonies.

I decided I wanted to incorporate the voodoo dolls into my hero prop somehow, either

decorating the prop or being the main part themselves. I also looked closely at key parts

of the altar/offerings, for example the food and drinks or the ornaments adorning the table.

I then moved on to the Prince part of my character, looking into thrones and crowns, as well as weapons a prince might own. I chose to disregard the idea of a weapon, a conventional one such as a sword at least, as I decided it didn’t fit my character or his lair at all.

I continued on by combining some of the research, using some decorations that may be found on the voodoo altar to decorate the generic shapes of a throne or crown that may be used by a prince. I kept this idea as I liked the thought of combining the two and changing the silhouette of normally plain shapes.
