Text: A fantastic love story
Once there was a rich man. His name was Malick. He had a beautiful daughter
whose name was Kumba. Kumba loved Samba, her father’s secretary. But she
couldn’t marry him because he was poor. Her father told her not to talk to Samba,
but Samba and Kumba used to meet in secret behind the orange trees.
One day, while Malick was walking near the orange trees, he saw Samba and
Kumba. He was very angry. He told his servants to build a fence around his house
and he told Samba to leave.
He ordered Kumba to marry Demba. He was a rich old man who lived in another
province.
Then Malick locked Kumba in a little hut near the lake.
The day of the wedding came closer. Kumba waited and waited for Samba. On the
day before the wedding, she saw a coconut shell floating in the lake. In it was a
message from Samba.
He asked her to wait until the next day, when he would come and take her away.
Demba arrived in the morning, with a large box of jewels for his bride. While he and
Malick were talking, Samba came secretly and took the box. He found Kumba in the
hut and they ran away together. Malick saw them, and he ran after them. But he
couldn’t catch Kumba and Samba.
They jumped into a boat and sailed hundreds of kilometres down the river.
Later, Samba and Kumba found an island where they got married and built a big
house.
They soon became rich and very happy till the end of their days.
