“Devotion to the mother is the root of all welfare”. This was the spirit echoing in every inch of Nachiketa Tapovan on 26th January, the day on which Indian Constitution came into force 59 years ago. We proudly bore the badges of Indian Flag in and on our proud bosoms. The celebrations started with the Chief Guest Sri K Vinai Garu MD Embedded Infotech Pvt. Limited, hoisting our Tiranga completed by a heartfelt National Anthem from all of us. The students of Tapovan opened the cultural affair with Veda Pathanam, followed by cheerful dances, thought provoking discussions, orations and yoga vinyasa. Vinai garu and Swami Nachiketananda also awarded certificates to the 2nd batch graduates of computer literacy classes. It would be more apt to say that Sri Vinai Garu had a hearty chat with us rather than a speech. The fun and frolic came to an end after words of enlightenment from Swamiji. ..Illustrations on page 8

EDITORIAL When this newsletter was launched on January11th 2009, as a part of Vidya Mandir’s Annual Day Celebrations, I was in for a surprise. Swamiji announced my name, requesting me to come and receive the first copy from Smt Padmaja Rambabu. I stepped forward after some hesitation. “Do I deserve this honour?” This was the foremost thought in my mind. Anyway, since it is the ‘Divine Will’, I am left with no option. After all the guests had left, Swamiji called me to the office and sprang yet another surprise. He entrusted me with the assignment of writing Editorials and you can well imagine my plight. Swamiji gave me no scope to voice my uncertainties. I submitted myself to the Divine plan. Many cautioned me that it would be very difficult to keep up with this task. I knew that, but still went ahead in the belief that if we take one step, Swamiji would take care of the rest and that sure has happened. We have successfully brought out our 3rd Issue of Newsletter without any teething troubles, thanks to Swamiji’s Grace and of course your good wishes. We are featuring our Republic Day Celebrations and an update on the Ashram Construction activities in the current issue.

Message by Adhyatmik Praneta

When you say, I want to reach God, who wants to reach
God? And where is that God? If the time ceases then distance ceases and there is no question of reaching God. You don’t need to say I have to reach my body or my mind. You exist everywhere in this body but not in just one part. That existence has been forgotten by every individual. When you exist everywhere you don’t need to reach somewhere. If you are able to drop that thought from your mind then this word “reach” doesn’t exist. If that word doesn’t exist then you know very well where you exist. You start searching for God elsewhere trying to find him in temples. When you look at yourself in the mirror, do you need to remind yourself of who you are? It is not at all necessary. The moment you think of God you have already created separation. In separation time exists, if time exists distance exists.

Yours in the service of Motherland Subhadra K.

Swami Nachiketananda Blessed are those who are into Sadhana!

Pure love has no motive. It has nothing to gain.

Sage Patanjali
In the previous issue we described different streams of yoga. In this issue we shall discuss about one of the streams that is Hatha Yoga. These days people are more health conscious. People have a misconception that yoga is meant for only treating obesity and other ailments. Even though we are practicing Hatha yoga, the main purpose or the real essence of Hatha yoga given by our sages is being forgotten. The spiritual aspect of life needs to be emphasized. HATHA YOGA is a combination of two Bija Mantras. ‘Ha’ represents ‘Prana’ the vital force, and ‘tha’ represents ‘Mind’, the mental energy. So Hatha yoga means the union of pranic and mental forces. It is a unique and wonderful event in man’s life when he experiences the union of pranic force and mental energy, he experiences the higher planes of consciousness and the purpose of life is fulfilled. If you are a real hatha yogi you will be aware of your body and internal mechanism. You will understand the relationship of body and mind in a better way.

Day by day science is progressing and we are very delighted to see that. But when a hatha yogi balances Ida and Pingala, develops sensitivity through hatha yoga, he can discover a new world, a new era of life full of intrinsic and external joy which is incomparable to that derived by scientific advancement. When a hatha yogi brings balance between ‘Ida’ and ‘Pingala’, he develops control over prana. This Prana Shakti and mental force exist in every object of world. These two forces are responsible for the creation and destruction. When the union occurs, then the creation unfolds. When there is separation between Prana Shakti and mental force and if they go back to their source then the creation is dissolved which leads to Pralaya. In yoga, life and consciousness are known as Prakriti and Purusha, in Tantra they are known as Shakti and Shiva, in Hatha Yoga they are called Ida and Pingala. Hatha yoga harmonizes Ida and Pingala. Due to imbalance of these forces people develop psychosomatic illnesses. This imbalance manifests as anger, greed, jealousy, lust etc. resulting in crime, murders and such vices. Always these forces are not harmonized. If Ida is active Pingala is passive and if Pingala is active Ida is passive. To bring harmony between Ida and Pingala, you need to purify your external and internal body by adopting shatkarmas or six cleaning techniques which are prescribed in Hatha yoga. Hatha Yoga Pradipika (2:21) Shatkarmas create balance between three doshas and help to prevent physical and mental diseases. In whom the doshas (phlegm, wind

and bile) are balanced, they need not practice them. When fat or mucus is excessive, the shatkarmas can be practised before Pranayama. Shatkarmas ‘Shat’ means six ‘karma’ means action, so the six cleansing processes are mentioned below. 1. Neti- It is a process of cleansing nasal passages. Jala neti and sutra neti are two kinds of Neti. 2. Dhauti- It is divided into three groups, Antar dhauti (internal cleansing), Shirsha Dhauti (head cleansing) and Hrid dhauti (thoracic cleansing) The internal cleansing techniques clean the entire alimentary canal from the mouth to the

anus. They are divided into four practices, Shankhu prakshalana – Cleansing of the intestines Agnisara - Activating digestive fire Vaman dhaut i- Cleansing the stomach with water Vastra dhauti - Cleansing the intestines with air 3. Nauli- It gives a nice massaging effect to all the abdominal organs. It activates the inner fire within. Nauli kriya strengthens all the abdominal organs. 4. Basthi– It cleanses the large intestine. 5. Kapalabhati- It purifies the frontal region of the brain. 6. Trataka- It is a technique of constant gazing. It develops the power of concentration.

Sutra Neti by Chalapathi

Danda Dhauti by Mataji

Shatkarmas are very powerful practices and these shatkarmas should not be learnt from books or taught by inexperienced people. They are to be learnt under perfect guidance of a guru. Our ancient sages used Hatha yoga as a means to prevent diseases and facilitate a smooth journey. Hence Hatha Yoga has been referred to as a “Science of Purification”.

Hatha Yoga is the science of purification!

Let us never, never, forget our Ideal

We are thankful to Shilparamam Co-ordinators who invited young artists to showcase their talent on Republic Day which was also covered by a few regional newspapers! We appreciate Smt Pallavi and Kum. Krishna for sharing their dancing skills with our students.

THE BLESSING The Mother’s heart, the hero’s will, The softest flowers’ sweetest feel; The charm and force that ever sway The altar-fire’s flaming play; The strength that leads, in love obeys; Far-reaching dreams, and patient ways, Eternal faith in Self, in all, The light Divine in great, in small; All these and more than I could see, Today may “Mother” grant to thee!

Char Dham Yatra

As a group of 44 pilgrims we had the rare privilege of going to Char Dham on a quest to find the meaning of life under the auspices of Swami Nachiketananda. Swamiji motivated us to connect with our higher self and this tour turned out to be the most beautiful, insightful and thought provoking inner journey. Rishikesh, the home for hundreds of Ashrams was the starting point of our journey. The variety of floral and herbal trees, the breath taking view of Himalayas and the river Yamuna flowing down at Yamunotri held us spellbound.

A visit to the temple of Mother Ganga, the spectacular Ganga Aarti and a meditation session on the banks of River Bhagirathi at Gangotri elevated our spirits. While Kedarnath is famous as one of the Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, the trek up the hills is very strenuous. The high altitudes, scarcity of oxygen and freezing nights made it tougher. Once we reached there we found it an amazing place, nestled in the lap of nature. The gurgling Mandakini river, the snow clad peaks and the presence of spiritual seekers (yogis) make the place ethereal. The sanctity of Badrinath left us speechless. Standing face to face with mythology was a thrilling experience. This 18 day pilgrimage to Char Dham and other spiritual places made a powerful impact on all of us in so many levels. We recommend this tour to all spiritual aspirants.

Our beautiful relationship with this wonderful organization called Intelli Group started with a small group of employees stopping by Tapovan with small gifts and warmth for our little ones. These short visits started becoming longer and more frequent as they felt the worth of Tapovan’s cause. Our relationship has evolved to such an extent that now they have become one of our all time supporters in cash, kind, and love in our endeavor to increase the standards of life of underprivileged sections of our society. On the same note we wish to convey our gratitude to the personnel of Intelli group for their generous contribution of Rs. 2,60,000 made to our organization on the 30th of January 2009.
