Alexius Comnenus. He expected armed men on horses. By Thomas Colbeck . Jimmy: Why did you choose the Nobles to lead the way of the Crusade? Pope: For the good of all Roman Catholics I wanted high church officials to lead the way in this holy battle.Council of Clermont Article Hello this is Jimmy reporting from Clermont on a beautiful day in France. This mob of people raided the countryside and towns on their way to Constantinople to keep themselves from starving. Once kicked out of Constantinople the peasants were ferried across the Bosporus River. These crusaders also robbed these Jews of all their wealth. Even his teachings were unique as he spoke of a forgiving God instead of the vengeful God we are all familiar with. When the crusaders reached a certain village they attacked thinking the inhabitants were Turkish. Lastly he gave money to the poor. Peter the Hermit and his fellow crusader Walter the Penniless (who was a poor knight as his name suggests) set off to capture Jerusalem. These two facts caused quite a bit of grief for everyone in their path. Once across they pillaged the outskirts of Nicea. This mob eventually got to Constantinople where they continued with their sinful robbery. The fact that his army had no training did not discourage Peter.A Colossal Disaster: The People’s Crusade The smell of death is in the air as the carcasses of 20. This mobs hate for nonCatholics was not only reserved for Jews as they also robbed other Eastern Orthodox Christians. Even though he had money he lived a simple existence wearing the same simple clothes day after day and ate the same food as the poor. even to lowly whores. The castle was surrounded while inside the crusaders were dying inside from lack of water. When king Arslan heard that one of his favorite castle was taken by a catholic army he sent his own army to surround the castle to lay siege to it. This surely would have dammed many crusaders to hell if they all had not received indulgences for going on a crusade.000 of them. There are even stories of people drinking mules blood and others of people drinking their own urine (1). Our most interesting man of the crusade is Peter the Hermit. Raymond of Toulouse or even Pope Urban II. This man is a shining example of how we should all act. Peter is also an extremely charismatic guy who can inspire men to perform great feats. He even gives money to prostitutes and asks for no “favors” in return. His teachings are even more unique then his way of life in that he speaks of God as loving and forgiving instead of angry and vengeful. All these traits led peter to organize a movement called the peoples Crusade. At first many thought this was blasphemy but after townspeople contacted their local literate monk they found out that the God in the bible could be nice.An Inside Look At: Peter the Hermit Many ask who is the most interesting man of the crusade? Bohemond of Tarento. This man lives a life of poverty when he has the means to live a lavish life. He acts almost divine which is probably why there are rumors floating around that he is the second coming of Jesus (Though Peter denies these claims). Here at the Tempus staff we have voted it not to be a knight in shining armor but a simple man who calls himself a hermit and wears the clothes of a monk. Though the peoples crusade was a total failure the fact that Peter could raise an army of 100. He wears the clothes of a monk when he can afford silk. and eats the same as a peasant. The Crusaders came very close over this year and a half expedition but just fell short of victory as weather conditions and food supplies just weren’t Seeing Eye to eye with these great warriors. (Crusades “The Illustrated History”). The Crusaders though all coming from the holy faith. The Siege of Antioch I am here today on June 2nd 1098 (Historical Atlas of the Crusades) with some of the Crusaders that have survived their siege on Antioch. As stood in front of them was a roman wall that ran for a staggering 10 miles long. Yet it wasn’t there biggest worry on their minds. At first I am told they didn’t know how to approach it until they came up to realise that it was way too dangerous to try and attack it. hung up naked and 8/10 of them where cut from groin to their foreheads. Symeons (Crusades “The Illustrated History”). supplies and even men. were not known as the nicest boys in the holy kingdom. This city seems to be able to hold its own and I see it has as these men have tried for a year and a half to get in but just can’t and now many of them are ready to give up. It is no wonder why these men are fighting for this town as it could potentially lead them into a great victory. Antioch is one of the biggest cities of today’s era and would be great for the Crusaders if they are able to captured it. The Crusaders wouldn’t try their first attack on this great city right away as they reported camped out about 3 km away from the city (Battles of The Crusades 1097-1444). But sadly things started going wrong from day one according to my inside Crusaders who wants to stay un-identified due to safety concerns. These men are very ruthless and as I walk outside and around Antioch I saw some horrible things. He got to the people inside and was able to convince them to help them get into the city. But I am told that this year and a half wasn’t always so bad and they ALMOST had the city in their hands. This city is magnificent from just the outside as I am not allowed in doors due to the fact I am talking with Crusaders. and all the Crusaders had arrived with high hopes of capture and return home as war legends and tell stories to their kids and families. Bohemond he tells me how it was all so close. I am told as everyone arrived to the great land of Antioch everyone was very high in hopes. As I arrived here I saw their brutal ways first hand. but sadly after a year and a half of hard work they are still un able to get their hands on the city they deeply want and need. This port was very important to the Crusaders as it was their way of transporting food. As I talk to this group of Crusader leader Mr. News got to the Crusaders leader that England has already seized its port. Though the Crusaders where trying to pull a siege of their own to the people of Antioch. Not only food supplies have ran short here. I am that told that during their time outside of the city they had many problems with their main ports being captured and taken over and having a very limited amount of food for some time. By: Alex Coletta . they were camping when a dreaded rain storm came along accompanied with very cold winds. they had their own supplies and food problem. But as my insider tells me. many men went out to look for food and supplies and ran into the jackpot. as I stand out here reporting I can see the number of men is very short to none as well. and wishing great hope for these men and hope that they prosper and lead into victory but for now they shall remain in a stalemate with food.
