SUPPLICATION WHEN SETTING OFF ON A JOURNEY |H 722 “When a person was about to set off on a journey, Abdullah, the son of Omar would say to him, ‘Come loser so that ! may bid farewell to you in the same way as the "rophet, praise and pea e be upon him, use to bid farewell to us# $! entrust to the are of Allah your %eli&ion, your trust and your final a tions#$'

GREET A GATHERING UPON ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE |H **2 “When you arri+e at a &atherin& you should &reet those present, and do the same when you depart# (he first &reetin& is not better than the last#,
Abu -aud and (irmidhi with a hain up to Abu Hurairah who related that the "rophet, praise and pea e be upon him, said this#

A SUPPLICATION FOR A JOURNEY |H 72. “A man ame to the "rophet, praise and pea e be upon him, and said, ‘O /essen&er of Allah, praise and pea e be upon him, ! am about to set off on a journey, 0indly bestow some pro+ision 1prayers2 upon me#3 He suppli ated sayin&, ‘/ay Allah pro+ide you with ri&hteousness#3 (he man as0ed, ‘"lease add to it#3 )o he suppli ated sayin&, ‘And may He for&i+e your sins#3 (he man as0ed a&ain, ‘"lease add some more#3 )o he suppli ated4 ‘And may He ma0e it easy for you to do &ood, where+er you may be#3'

in e+ery ampai&n e< ept (abu0# ! did not a ompany the /essen&er of Allah at =adr and at that time he did not blame anyone who did not a ompany him#3 (he /essen&er of Allah. praise and pea e be upon him. and his Companions had been obser+in& the :oraysh ara+an when Allah ordained an une<pe ted lash to o ur between them and their enemies# Howe+er. praise and pea e be upon him. and e+il loo0s upon the family or property#. praise and pea e be upon him. praise and pea e be upon him. $! 1:a3ab2 a ompanied the /essen&er of Allah. praise and pea e be upon him. the son of /ali0 who was blind2 heard him say. in urrin& any loss after &ain. and ! would not e< han&e A>abah for =adr with all its fame# As for my failure to a ompany the /essen&er of Allah. /uslim with a hain up to Abdullah son of )arjis who related this# SUPPLICATION FROM HARM |H 66. /uslim with a hain up to :haulah the dau&hter of Ha0im who related that she heard the /essen&er of Allah. set out on a journey he suppli ated see0in& the prote tion of Allah a&ainst the hardships of the journey. the &uide of :a3ab. “Whene+er the /essen&er of Allah. praise and pea e be upon him. sensed e+il from people. 1Abdullah. ! was present with the /essen&er of Allah. durin& the ni&ht of A>abah when we pled&ed our oath of omplete adheren e to !slam. praise and pea e be upon 2 .3 will not suffer from any form of harm until he departs from that pla e#. en ounterin& anythin& &rie+ous upon the return. the suppli ation of he who is harmed. say SETTING OFF ON A JOURNEY ON A THURSDAY MORNING |H 6. praise and pea e be upon him. said this# SEEK PROTECTION FROM THE HARM OF A PLACE |H 667 “Whosoe+er rea hes a point of arri+al and suppli ates. he suppli ated4 ‘O Allah. praise and pea e be upon him. the son of :a3ab. at the ampai&n of (abu0 ! will tell you# At that time ! was stron&er and more affluent than at any other time# ! had two ridin& amels ? before that time ! had ne+er owned two# !t was the pra ti e of the /essen&er of Allah.SUPPLICATION FOR THE PROTECTION OF ALLAH |H 6*7 “When the /essen&er of Allah. ‘! see0 the prote tion of the omplete Words of Allah from the e+il of that whi h is reated.6 “!. we let 8our safety push their plottin& into their hests and see0 refu&e with 8ou from their e+ils#3' Abu -aud and 9isa$i with a hain up to Abu /usa Ash$ari who related that the /essen&er of Allah.

praise and pea e be upon him. only to return later without a omplishin& anythin&. was also lar&e and a re&ister had not yet been established to list all of them# 9o man relu tant to &o ima&ined that his absen e would &o unnoti ed unless it was dis losed by Allah# !t was a time when the fruit on the trees had ripened and their shade was dense 5 this too rossed my mind# (he /essen&er of Allah. praise and pea e be upon him. were only those who were either suspe ted of hypo risy or e< used on a ount of a&e or somethin& similar# (he "rophet. but ! did not# As ! went about in the town it &rie+ed me to noti e that amon& those who remained at home. praise and pea e be upon him. sayin& to myself. did not omment# !t was at this time that the /essen&er of Allah. praise and pea e be upon him. while the Companions set off on their mar h# ! thou&ht ! would set off by myself and o+erta0e them 5 how ! wish ! had done so. he did not ome be ause of his two loa0s and admiration of his fineryA3 Bpon hearin& this /u$aC son of Dabal said.him. li0e me. we 0now nothin& about him e< ept &ood#3 (he "rophet. ‘/ay it be Abu :haisamah3. was on his way ba 0 from (abu0 ! was filled with an<iety F . obser+ed someone at a distan e in the desert lad in white and e< laimed. praise and pea e be upon him. set out with them on his mar h# ! had done nothin& to prepare myself# ! remained in my inde isi+e state. in fa t he would imply the opposite up until the last moment# Howe+er. praise and pea e be upon him. made no mention of me until after he rea hed (abu0# One day when he was sittin& with his Companions he in>uired. ‘What has happened to :a$ab the son of /ali0@3 )omeone from amon& the =ani )alimah said. that whene+er he de ided to embar0 upon a ampai&n not to dis lose his real obje ti+e. praise and pea e be upon him. and he was ri&ht ? Abu :haisamah had been ta0en for a be&&ar by the hypo rites on a ount that he &a+e a small >uantity of dates in harity# When ! learned that the /essen&er of Allah. and his Companions who were to a ompany him o upied themsel+es with their preparations# ! would &o out in the mornin& intendin& to do the same alon& with them. ‘(here is plenty of time# ! an &et ready whene+er ! wish#3 (ime passed and the Companions had ompleted their preparations# (hen one day. and the enemy was &reat in stren&th# He warned his Companions learly and told them of his obje ti+e so that they were able to ma0e ade>uate preparations# (he number of those who prepared to ma0e themsel+es ready to a ompany the /essen&er of Allah. praise and pea e be upon him. be ause it was the season of intense heat and the journey was &oin& to be lon& a ross the desert. ‘E+il is what you ha+e said# O /essen&er of Allah. ‘O /essen&er of Allah. without a omplishin& anythin&. on this o asion. praise and pea e be upon him. the /essen&er of Allah.

until Allah de ides your ase#3 )ome men of the hildren of )alimah followed me out of the /os>ue and said. ! onsulted members of my family whose jud&ment ! trusted# When ! heard that the "rophet$s. ‘(his one has told the truth. now withdraw. and possessed many &ood >ualities. ! ould easily es ape his displeasure with some e< use. said. ! realiCed that no false e< use would help me therefore ! de ided to tell the truth# He arri+ed the ne<t mornin&# When he returned from a journey it was his ustom to &o strai&ht to the /os>ue and offer two +oluntary units of prayer 1ra0a$s2. a epted their e< uses and renewed their oaths# (hen he prayed for for&i+eness for them and ommitted to Allah whate+er they had in their minds# When it ame to my turn and ! &reeted himG he smiled. ‘O /essen&er of Allah. if ! had been onfronted by someone other than yourselfG su h as a man of the world. and he said. praise and pea e be upon himA3 (hey persisted in reproa hin& me so harshly that ! almost went ba 0 to the /essen&er of Allah. ‘We ha+e ne+er 0nown you to ommit a sin before this. arri+al was imminent. li0e the others who did not ta0e part in the ampai&n ? your sin would ha+e been for&i+en throu&h the suppli ation of the /essen&er of Allah. praise and pea e be upon him. ‘/urarah son of %abi$a $Amiri and Hilal the son of Bmayyah Wa>ifi#3 When they mentioned these two ri&hteous men who had parti ipated in the =attle of =adr. had you not pur hased your mount@3 ! replied. praise and pea e be upon him. to withdraw my onfession# (hen. but displeasure was +isible in his smile. and then meet the people# He did the same on this o asion and those who did not parta0e in the ampai&n ame forward and be&an. ! was stren&thened in my de ision# (he /essen&er of Allah. praise and pea e be upon him. dire ted his Companions not to spea0 to the three of us# "eople a+oided us as if . on oath.and be&an to fabri ate false e< uses in my mind to help me sa+e myself from his an&er# Also. ‘What 0ept you ba 0. praise and pea e be upon him. why didn$t you offer an e< use to the /essen&er of Allah. praise and pea e be upon him. ! stepped forward and sat down before him# He as0ed. praise and pea e be upon him. whi h mi&ht e+en on+in e you. ! an still hope for mer y from Allah. ! as0ed. ‘Are there any ases similar to mine@3 (hey replied. without doubt Allah will soon arouse your an&er a&ainst me o+er somethin& else# =ut. be ause ! am &ifted with s0ill of plausibility# Howe+er. the E<alted# =y Allah ! ha+e no e< use# ! was ne+er stron&er or more affluent than when ! held ba 0 from a ompanyin& you#$ (he /essen&er of Allah. ‘Come forward#3 )o. if ! tell you the truth and you are an&ry with me. . ! 0new that if ! were to on o t a false story to you today. to &i+e their e< uses# (hey were o+er ei&hty people and the "rophet.

a messen&er of the "rophet. praise and pea e be upon him. but he should not asso iate with you#3 )he told the "rophet. one day ! went and limbed o+er the &arden wall belon&in& to my ousin Abu :hatadah of whom ! was +ery fond# ! &reeted him. who had brou&ht &rain to sell. he does not ha+e a ser+ant# Would it displease you if ! were to ser+e him@3 He replied4 ‘9o. and said. ‘E+er sin e this happened. $We ha+e heard that your master has treated you unjustly# Allah has not made you to be humiliated and maltreated# Come o+er to us and we shall re ei+e you &ra iously#$ Bpon this. but he did not return my &reetin&# ! said to him. praise and pea e be upon him@3 =ut he remained silent# ! repeated my earnest >uestion. ‘Abu :hatadah. ‘Allah and His /essen&er 0now best#3 When ! heard this. ame to me and said. ! would stand near him and ! noti ed that he would &lan e in my dire tion when ! was prayin& and loo0 away when ! loo0ed in his dire tion# Heelin& an&uish and deeply hurt by the harshness of /uslims towards me. praise and pea e be upon him. ! said to myself. ‘(he /essen&er of Allah. ‘)hould ! di+or e her or what should ! do@3 He replied. ! burst into tears and returned home# One day ! was in the mar0et5pla e of /edina when ! heard a )yrian peasant. shuttin& themsel+es away in their homes# =ein& the youn&est and tou&hest of the three. ! would &o out and join my fellow /uslims for prayers and wal0 in the streets. ‘(his is another trial.3 and threw the letter into the o+en# After forty days of the fifty had elapsed without any indi ation in the %e+elation on ernin& us. just do not asso iate with her#3 ! understood that my two ompanions had been dire ted li0ewise.we were stran&ers. but he still did not reply# ! as0ed a third time and he replied. do you not 0now that ! lo+e Allah and His /essen&er. ‘9o. ‘O /essen&er of Allah. when he sat in the /os>ue after prayer and &reet him wonderin& whether he had mo+ed his lips to return my &reetin&# -urin& prayer. praise and pea e be upon him. and weeps ontinuously#3 7 . he has no interest in me. praise and pea e be upon him. ‘Would someone dire t me to :a$ab the son of /ali0@3 (he people pointed in my dire tion and he ame to me and handed me a letter from the :in& of Ihassan# =ein& literate ! read it# !t read. althou&h no one would spea0 to me# ! would wait before the /essen&er of Allah. and ! felt as if ! was in a stran&e land# (his state of affairs ontinued for fifty days# /y two Companions were so o+er ome by misery and shame that they went into se lusion. Hilal the son of Bmayyah is old and unable to loo0 after himself. ! as0 you in the 9ame of Allah. dire ts you not to asso iate with your wife#3 ! in>uired. so ! told my wife to &o her parents and remain with them until Allah determined the matter# (he wife of Hilal son of Bmayyah went to the "rophet. praise and pea e be upon him. praise and pea e be upon him. as0.

praise and pea e be upon him# On my way to the /essen&er of Allah. praise and pea e be upon him. it seemed to ha+e be ome narrow and small for me# )uddenly. praise and pea e be upon him. seated surrounded by people# Amon&st them was (alha. son of Bbaidullah who &ot up and rushed towards me. and ! ha+e ne+er for&otten his &esture# When ! &reeted the /essen&er of Allah. ‘=e happy with this. and besides. the best of days sin e your mother &a+e birth to youA3 ! as0ed. the E<alted had &ra iously a epted our repentan e. sayin&. as Allah. ‘!t is indeed from Allah#3 When he was happy. informed the Companions that Allah. all my possessions as harity . ! too0 off my &arments and &a+e them to him ? ! had no other set of &arments to wear so ! borrowed some and went off to &reet the /essen&er of Allah. ‘O /essen&er of Allah. is this from you or from Allah@3 He answered. ! was sittin& at home feelin& sad and althou&h the world is wide. and upon hearin& this se+eral people set off to on+ey the &ood news to us# )ome went to my two ompanions and another hastened on his horse in the dire tion of my home# One man from the tribe of Aslam ra ed up the mountain and his +oi e rea hed me before the arri+al of the horseman# When the one whose +oi e ! had heard arri+ed to on&ratulate me. ! en ountered &roups and rowds of people who on&ratulated me. ! heard someone shout at the top of his +oi e from the top of /ount )ala$ah4 ‘O :a$ab the son of /ali0 &ood newsA3 !mmediately ! fell down prostrate and realiCed that relief had ome# At the dawn prayer the /essen&er of Allah. it was usual for the happiness upon his fa e to shine as if it were a part of the moon 5 when this happened we 0new he was pleased# (o omplete my repentan e. his fa e shone with joy and he said. praise and pea e be upon him. ‘=lessed is the a eptan e by Allah of your repentan e#3 When ! entered the /os>ue ! found the /essen&er of Allah. for this be ause ! did not 0now what he mi&ht say. . after the dawn prayer.)ome of my people su&&ested to me that ! should also see0 the permission of the "rophet. ! was youn&er# (en more days and ni&hts passed li0e this# On the fifty5first mornin&. praise and pea e be upon him. the E<alted des ribes. praise and pea e be upon him. so that my wife may also loo0 after me as the wife of Hilal bin Bmayyah did. praise and pea e be upon him. ! offered to &i+e the /essen&er of Allah. praise and pea e be upon him. shoo0 my hand and on&ratulated me# He was the only one from of the Emi&rants who &ot up. praise and pea e be upon him. but ! did not as0 the /essen&er of Allah.

the E<alted.-++* . $e is %entle. praise and pea e be upon him.in the Cause of Allah and His /essen&er. ! ha+e ne+er had any in lination to tell a lie. has not tried anyone so well in the matter of truthfulness as He has tried me# (o this day. they (ne! there !as no shelter from Allah except in $im# 'hen $e turned to them (in mercy) so that they might also turn (in repentance)# Allah is the 'urner. ‘! shall retain the portion whi h is in :haybar#3 (hen ! said. Allah turned (in mercy) to the Prophet. indeed. ‘O /essen&er of Allah. they !ill apologi0e to you# ay: Ma(e no excuses1 !e !ill not "elieve you# Allah has already told us of your ne!s# urely. !ho follo!ed him !hen some of their hearts !ere a"out to serve a!ay# $e turned to them. my &reatest blessin& was when ! told the truth to the /essen&er of Allah. praise and pea e be upon him# He told me. and Allah willin&. ! will ontinue to prote t myself a&ainst it durin& my remainin& days# Allah. And their souls "ecame narro! for them. the Most Merciful# &elievers.no!er of the unseen and the visi"le. ‘After Allah had &uided me to !slam. sin e my de laration. fear of Allah and stand !ith the truthful#) *:++. praise and pea e be upon him. Allah and $is Messenger !ill see your !or(1 then you !ill "e returned to the .oran :a$ab ontinued. Allah ondemns those who indul&e in lyin& sayin&4 ‘/hen you return. Allah the E<alted. the Exalted. and $e !ill inform you of !hat you !ere doing# /hen you return. revealed: ‘In the hour of adversity. praise and pea e be upon him. lyin& to him as others lied would only ha+e aused my ruination# !n His %e+elation. Allah. and as part of my repentan e ! shall say nothin& but the truth for the rest of my life#3 E+er sin e ! de lared this before the /essen&er of Allah. has deli+ered me only be ause ! adhered to the truth. they !ill s!ear to you "y Allah that you might turn aside from them# 7 . the Emigrants (of Mecca) and the upporters (of Medina). ‘%etain part of it 5 that is better for you#3 )o ! said. the Most Merciful# And to the three !ho had "een left "ehind (at the &attle of 'a"u() until the earth "ecame narro! !ith all its vastness.

worshipin&. they are unclean# %ehenna shall "e their refuge. and praisin& our Lord#3 He would repeat this until we entered the town#. the Most Merciful#) *:++5 . praise and pea e be upon him. * . praise and pea e be upon him.2et them alone.oran !t does not mean that we la&&ed behind from jihad. they (ne! there !as no shelter from Allah except in $im# 'hen $e turned to them (in mercy) so that they might also turn (in repentance)# Allah is the 'urner. 0ept our matter pendin& until Allah determined it with4 ‘And to the three !ho had "een left "ehind ( in Medina). then he would sit down and re ei+e people#. =u0hari and /uslim with a hain up to Abdullah son of :a3ab son of /ali0. before noon# Bpon his arri+al he would &o immediately to the /os>ue and offer two +oluntary units of prayer 1ra0a$s2. a recompense for their earnings#) *:*3-*4 . and whi h he a epted renewin& their o+enant and for whom he suppli ated for for&i+eness# (he /essen&er of Allah. but it means that Allah deferred our ases until after the ases of those who had pleaded on oath before the /essen&er of Allah. praise and pea e be upon him.oran :a3ab said. said. and when /edina ame into si&ht the "rophet. until the earth "ecame narro! !ith all its vastness. pro eeded to the ampai&n at (abu0# :a$ab say this# SUPPLICATION WHEN THE END OF ONE'S JOURNEY IS IN SIGHT |H JKKK “We were returnin& from a journey with the "rophet. praise and pea e be upon him. praise and pea e be upon him. and their souls "ecame narro! for them. Another narration tells us that4 “!t was his pra ti e to return from a journey durin& day5li&ht. set out for (abu0 on a (hursday# His preferen e was to set out on a journey on (hursdays#. praise and pea e be upon him. 5 who was also :a3ab$s &uide when he be ame blind who 5 said4 ! heard :a3ab son of /ali0 &i+e a full a ount of the in ident that aused him to remain behind when the /essen&er of Allah. ‘We are returnin& repentant. praise and pea e be upon him. ‘(he matter of the three of us had been left in the balan eG separated from the matter of those who had made e< uses on oath before the /essen&er of Allah. and he had a epted their e< uses#3' Another narration adds4 “(he /essen&er of Allah.

and for the deeds that please 8ou# O Allah. “On the o asion of the two Eid festi+als. praise and pea e be upon him. =u0hari with a hain up to Dabir who related this# 6 . we as0 8ou in our journey for ri&hteousness and a+oidan e of sin. praise and pea e be upon him. =u0hari and /uslim with a hain up to :a$ab son of /ali0 who related this# THREE PRAYERS THAT ARE ALWAYS ACCEPTED |H 66F '(hree 0inds of prayer are without doubt assured of a eptan e4 the prayer of the oppressedG the prayer of the tra+eler. and return from it by another#. worshipin& Him and praisin& Him#3' /uslim with a hain up to ibn Omar who related that the /essen&er of Allah. would pro eed to the prayer alon& one route. we oursel+es are not apable of it. ma0e this journey easy for us and shorten its len&th for us# O Allah. said this# T=E 8ENE6IT >A? 96 RET:RNING A %I66ERENT DIFFERENT ROUTES |H 72. praise and pea e be upon him. to our Lord we are turnin&# O Allah. indeed. said this# JOURNEY'S END |H JKKJ “When the "rophet. family and hildren#3 On his return he would repeat the suppli ation and would add. praise and pea e be upon him./uslim with a hain up to Anas who related that the "rophet. mounted his amel to set out on a journey he would re ite4 ‘Allah is Ireat3 three times# (hen he would suppli ate. and the prayer of a father for his son#' Abu -aud and (irmidhi with a hain up to Abu Hurairah who related that the "rophet. turnin& to our Lord. said this# SUPPLICATIONS UPON JOURNEY’S END |H 6*. ! see0 8our prote tion from the hardships of the journey and that ! may not en ounter anythin& &rie+ous on my return re&ardin& my wealth. ‘We return in safety. 8ou are the Companion on this journey and the Iuardian of those we lea+e behind# O Allah. “When the "rophet. praise and pea e be upon him. ‘E<altations to Him who has subje ted these to us otherwise. praise and pea e be upon him. the "rophet. returned from a journey he would &o strai&ht to the /os>ue and offer two units 1ra0a$2 of +oluntary prayer#.

no rider would set out on a journey alone at ni&ht#. =u0hari and /uslim with a hain up to the son of Omar who related this# T=E VIRT:E 96 TRAVELING IN T=E <9. =u0hari with a hain up to ibn Omar who related that the "rophet. said this# TRAVEL )Y NIGHT |H 67. Abu -awud. be ause durin& the ni&ht it is the tra 0 of harmful beasts and reptiles#.. said this# ETI@:ETTE 96 TRAVELING AN% ALL IT ENTAIL# STRIKING CAMP |H 67. said this# APPOINTMENT OF A LEADER WHEN TRAVELING |H 672 “When three people set out on a journey they should appoint one amon& them as their leader#. would &o by way of )hajarah and return by way of /u$arras# He entered /e a by the hi&her pass and left it by the lower pass#. two riders are two satans and three riders are a ara+an#. “8ou should always tra+el by ni&ht be ause the earth shrin0s durin& the ni&ht#. praise and pea e be upon him. JK . praise and pea e be upon him. praise and pea e be upon him. “When you tra+el throu&h fertile land. praise and pea e be upon him. the son of )huaib who related on the authority of his father +ia his &randfather that the "rophet. prais a!" p a# $ %p&! 'i( |H 727 “(he "rophet. said this# TRAVELING IN A CARAVAN |H 67J “One rider is a satan. &i+e the amels their share from the land and when you tra+el throu&h barren land hasten your pa e and onser+e their ener&y# When you ma0e amp for the ni&ht lea+e the tra 0. (irmidhi and 9isa$i with a hain up to Amr. /uslim with a hain up to Abu Hurairah who related that the "rophet.PROPHET'S TRAVEL. Abu -awud with a hain up to Abu )a$id :hudri and Abu Hurairah who related that the "rophet.AN? 96 A LEA%ER TRAVELING ALONE AT NIGHT |H 67K “!f people 0new the haCards ! 0now of tra+elin& alone. praise and pea e be upon him.

Abu -aud with a hain up to Abu (ha$labah :hushini who related that the "rophet. son of Da$far2 ride pillion with him one day and onfided somethin& to me whi h ! shall ne+er dis lose to anyone# ! pride myself that he did not on eal himself from me behind a wall or the trun0 of a date palm#. praise and pea e be upon him. /uslim with a hain up to Abu :hatadah who related this# VALUE OF CAMPING CLOSE TO ONE ANOTHER |H 677 “Bpon stri0in& amp we used to disperse amon& the dunes and +alleys till the "rophet. would stri0e amp in the latter part of the ni&ht and lie down on his ri&ht side# !f he halted a little before dawn he would stret h out. ‘O /essen&er of Allah. ‘=e mindful of your duty to Allah in respe t of these animals# %ide them while they are in &ood ondition. praise and pea e be upon him. praise and pea e be upon him.
