FROM THE DESK OF FR. DENNIS MILLER

Next weekend, we will have another of our one priest weekends. Weve been scheduling these every other month for approximately a year and I feel like its time to give you some updates. I know that they are confusing or frustrating for some of you, especially if you showed up on a weekend and found that Mass was at a different time or different location than you were expecting. Nonetheless, please let me assure you that we are not just experimenting for the sake of experimentation, nor are we trying to frustrate people so they no longer come to church. These weekends are an important part of our mission, to ensure a Catholic presence into the future of these counties The purpose of one priest weekends is to plan for a possible time when there is only one priest available for our cluster. This may be a shortterm situation in which one of the priests become sick, goes on sabbatical, or is asked to help out at another assignment or a longer term scenario in which the number of priests declines to the point where there is only one priest available. Either of these scenarios is more than likely to occur in the future and, as Dave Ramsey says, Failing to plan is planning to fail. I met with the cluster pastoral council and cluster liturgy committee to talk this over with them and we decided on a couple of preliminary assumptions. First, if there is only one priest available, the maximum number of Masses on any given weekend is four. This has as much to do with Church law as it does with fatigue on the part of the priest. Second, given the driving distance between parishes, the only possible scenario is two Masses Saturday evening and two Masses Sunday morning. Third, the fairest way to distribute the four Masses is to have two Masses in Hancock County and two Masses in Winnebago County. Fourth, we decided to try to avoid a six month rotation type of schedule but to set a schedule and stick with it. Lastly, we decided that the three bigger parishes (Britt. Forest City, and Garner) should have Mass every weekend. The smaller parishes (Buffalo Center, Duncan, and Lake Mills), though remaining open and vibrant, will not have Mass every weekend. I will go into further detail next week about this. DAILY MASS CANCELLATIONS: CANCELLATIONS: In the event that school is NOTICE delayed or cancelled for West Hancock, Hancock, GarnerGarner-Hayfield, Hayfield, Forest City or Lake Mills due to weather conditions, the morning Mass will be cancelled for the day. If school is cancelled or dismissed early due to weather conditions, the daily afternoon Mass will be cancelled.
