Fighting Fit

Step has been a fitness favorite for 18 years for very good reasons. While it designed to strengthen knees it’s a fabulous cardiovascular workout. Step uses many more muscles than any other type of cardio training, thus reducing the risk of overuse injuries. Plus, the effort made to learn the moves is actually wonderful for the brain. While this class is designed for people who are familiar with Step, anyone who is interested should sign up as you will become quite comfortable with the moves within a few weeks. Walter

Are You Taking a Swimming Class?
Arlington County is proud to provide lessons that are based on the Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Program. When registering please make sure participants can complete all necessary prerequisites prior to beginning the class. Students who are not at the right level hinder the classes’ ability to function. Everyone progresses at different speeds, so it is typical to repeat courses. Public Health requires pools to close when contaminated. Swim diapers or snug-fitting plastic pants must be worn by anyone who is incontinent. Also please do not eat within 30 minutes of swimming. When registering for a class you are ONLY allowed to swim during the class time, there will be no swimming allowed to class participants before or after the class session unless the customer pays a general admission or has a monthly or annual pass. For more information on Swimming classes visit our website and search: SWIMMING.

ATTENTION GYMNASTICS PARTICIPANTS:

In July 2013, USA Gymnastics updated the skill requirements for levels 1-10 and changed the level names. For our recreational class program this change affects levels 1-4, starting FALL 2013. The updates may seem a bit confusing so please talk with your instructor about which class to register for this winter. First time beginners that are 5 years and older should register for Level 1: Beginner. For returning participants, please register for the appropriate class listed below:

Gymnasts are introduced to advanced gymnastics skills on the vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise. A strong foundation is needed to excel through these new progressions. Students need to pass the skill requirements before moving to level 3/4. Pre-requisite: Level 2.

WCRB Karate’s Mixed Martial Arts is a compilation of the styles Karate Master Rod Batiste has mastered over a 44 year period. It combines kickboxing, boxing, judo, jujitsu, and Kung fu into one fast paced, fun class. The first part of the program studies of three components: upper body mastery, lower body mastery, and the mastery of takedowns and throes. The second part covers how to effectively combine these components. The third part of the program will be application. The goal of the class is to give participants superior personal safety skills and superior fitness. While application of techniques will go beyond theory, high impact and aggressive behavior will not be welcomed. Dawson

Signing Smart™ strategies integrate more than 150 American Sign Language signs into songs, games and activities developed to engage very young children and their parents. Research has shown that using American Sign Language with hearing babies and toddlers allows communication and spoken language to happen earlier and faster, while reducing frustration and tantrums. Most children have two to three words by 12 months, whereas Signing Smart TM children typically have 25 signs and 16 words! Most children start combining words into two-word sentences by 20 months, whereas Signing Smart TM children typically do this by 11-14 months and some as early as six months! The National Institute of Health even found a 12-point IQ increase for eight year-olds who used signs as young children. More research, class pictures and family quotes at www.ParentChildU.com. winter Class Registration Times Change!
In an effort to better serve the growing number of Arlingtonians who enjoy our classes, the Department of Parks and Recreation is moving up and dividing class registration times. On December 11, resident online registration opens only for Gymnastics classes at 7:00 a.m. and for ALL OTHER classes online registration begins at 7:30 a.m. This change reflects two issues. First, the number of people registering for recreation classes during the first minutes of the online registration has increased by 40% over the last year. We’ve made a number of technical changes to support this growth; we hope that separating gymnastics, which constitutes close to half of the classes, from the other offerings will improve the speed of the online system and reduce phone call wait times. What’s more, many people asked that we move the entire registration process earlier as the old opening time conflicted with many families’ general morning rush. Parks and Recreation continues to look for ways to make class registration easier (such as the new online registration portal) and support the community’s interest in recreation classes in general.
