Clarks wife, Cindy, and her daughter, Jennifer, accept the posthumous Bright Star award from the Northern Ohio Area Chambers of Commerce at a Cleveland awards banquet.

Late John Clark Honored by Northern Ohio Chambers

The Chamber Bright Stars for 2013 were recognized recently at the semi-annual Chamber Leadership meeting and sixth annual Chamber Bright Star Awards presentation of the Northern Ohio Area Chambers of Commerce (NOACC) in the Legends Club at the First Energy Stadium in Cleveland. More than 50 chambers of commerce across northern Ohio nominated a person from their chamber as their Bright Star, to recognize someone who has made a signicant impact on the chamber through membership, retention, sponsorship, economic development, operations and/or education. Each Bright Star is an active chamber member for no less than two years and is likely to be an unsung hero or a dedicated behind-the-scenes volunteer. John Clark was honored posthumously by the Huron Chamber for his nearly two decades of service as BGSU Firelands Colleges permanent representative to the Board of Directors. His wife, Cindy, and daughter, Jennifer, accepted his certicate and trophy from Tony Gallo, NOACC chairman and director of business development for Lorain County Chamber. The Huron Chamber lost not only a long-time board member, but a dedicated volunteer and great friend when he was killed in an auto accident last May. As coordinator of career services at the college, he left a legacy of young and re-entry students whose lives he impacted in very positive ways. At a memorial service on campus this fall, several hundred people turned out, each with a heart-warming story of how he touched their hearts and helped them along the path to a ner future. A quiet, can-do kind of guy, John was always eager to pitch in and help with the many various Chamber activities throughout the year. But always, just beneath the surface, was that razorsharp wit and dry sense of humor which surfaced each December when he donned a Santa suit during the Chambers stint at the Festival of Lights. As a car full of

children pulled up to the Candy Cane house, John would morph into an engaging Saint Nick who had them convinced that he was watching closely from the North Pole to see if they were naughty or nice. Their eyes would get a big as saucers and you just knew that they would be on their behavior until the big day. The Bright Star award winners represent a wide range of involvement with their respective chambers, some having been a member and or ofcer or committee chairman for 20+ years and some being newly involved but each of whom has given freely of his/her time, working hard for their chambers without any expectations. Tony Gallo, NOACC Chairman said our volunteers are the common bond in each chamber. Giving recognition to our Bright Star in a public way lets our membership and community know we appreciate the time, talent and treasure that they provided.

Canton-based Uniform Store Opens Second Location in Huron

BY LISA YAKO For many years, Canton (Ohio) area residents purchased uniform apparel from long-standing business, Uniforms Unique. About four years ago, the thriving uniform business was purchased from its founder by her daughter, Lori Gray. The business was subsequently renamed, The Uniform Store. Though Lori grew up in Canton, she was also quite familiar with the Huron area. Lori explained that We had a boat at Catawba Island when I was a kid, and we came up here every weekend. Back then Route 2 did not go across the Huron River, so we had to exit at Berlin Road and come thru Huron and then pick up the highway on the other side of town. We used to stop at the Pied Piper, Berardi's, and Marconi's at least once or twice every month. Further she stated I grew up loving the charm of Huron. When Lori purchased the uniform store from her mother, she decided to leave her career as a Regional Sales Director for a large nursing home company. Owning the uniform store offered her the exibility to slow down and assist in caring for her mother who had some health issues. After some life changes, Lori and her mother decided to move to Huron and join her brother who had lived here for many years. With her husbands encouragement, Lori decided to open The Uniform Place, Too here in Huron. Lori chose to open her second business in the north end of the building at 607 Main Street. Lori and Lucky Stone Promotions owner, Jenny Hagy, already had a business relationship for custom embroidery, so the location was a natural t. The Uniform Place, Too carries a wide variety of health care apparel for anyone that needs to wear scrubs to work. In addition, they carry housekeeping uniforms, chef coats, cook jackets, waitress aprons, hats, pants, etc. Some of the brands that The Uniform Place, Too carries include Jockey Scrubs, Koi and Orange Standard, Wonder Wink, Crocs, and Peaches. The store also offers a full line of medical accessories and other health care-related items. According to Lori, We pride ourselves on knowing the latest in brands, trends and t and fabric. We know what looks good and what will be comfortable to wear all day! The Uniform Place, Too will be celebrating their grand opening on Saturday, November 16. The store is open Tuesday through Friday from 11:00 AM until 6:00 PM and Saturday from 10 AM until 3:00 PM. Should a customer need something in an emergency outside of normal business hours, Lori will gladly open the store. That is one benet of shopping local! she exclaimed.

New Store Offers Options for Local Merchandise

BY LISA YAKO For many years, the store front at 607 South Main Street sat vacant; yet, now the display windows are full just in time for the holidays. At the beginning of this month, Lucky Stone Promotions moved into the south portion of the retail space and opened their doors for business. This unique store is owned and operated by Huron resident, Jenny Hagy, and her husband, Joel. From 1996 until 2008, Jenny worked as a manufacturing representative for a company offering corporate apparel. In 2008, she decided to strike out on her own in the corporate apparel and promotional merchandise business and started Lucky Stone Promotions. At that point, Jenny ran her business out of her home and relied on online sales exclusively. As the business grew, she looked for an opportunity to expand her offerings. Jenny felt there was a need in Huron for a retail outlet that offered resort wear and also high-end custom embroidering. So, Jenny began looking for a retail space to open a store to showcase her products. She found the perfect

location on South Main Street. In addition to still offering custom corporate promotional items, the retail store carries Huron Tigers, Ohio State, and Huron/Lake Erie apparel, including Varsity jackets, and other merchandise. Sizes offered run from infant to youth extra large to adult sizes extra small to 3X. In addition, items created by local artists, such as beach glass jewelry, note cards, and unique crocheted baby items, are also available. Though Lucky Stone Promotions has been open since November 2, the store will be having an ofcial ribbon cutting on November 14 and will be celebrating their grand opening on Saturday, November 16. Door prizes will be available for those who visit the store during their grand opening. Lucky Stone Promotions is open from 11:00 AM until 6:00 PM on Tuesday through Friday and from 10:00 AM until 3:00 PM on Saturday. The store is closed on Sunday and Monday. For more information, visit their web site, www.luckystonepromotions, their Facebook page, or call the store at 419-616-6008.

Approximately two years ago, Huron resident, Brad Storer, was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrigs disease. This debilitating disease has progressed quickly for Brad who is a husband and father of two children, Abby who is in college and Adam who is a junior at Huron High School. Brad has contributed to our community in many ways including coaching baseball and basketball. Now, some residents are trying to raise money in an effort to give back to this valuable member of the Huron community. On Saturday, November 16 from 8:00 AM until noon, a

Reminder: Leaf Pick-Up Continues

Residents are reminded that leaves are not to be raked into piles at the curb or into the roadway. All residents must use the appropriate yard waste receptacles for leaf disposal; 20 to 35 gallon trash can receptacles clearly marked as YARD WASTE containers. In place of receptacles, biodegradable yard waste bags may be substituted which can be purchased at most retail outlets.

There is no maximum amount of leaf refuse; however, no receptacle can weigh over 50 pounds. The citys refuse hauler, F.S.I., will pick up all packaged leaves as part of the normal weekly collection cycle; service began the rst Monday in October and will continue through the last Monday in December.

Grow Herbs inside This Winter

Weve probably all seen herbs that people have attempted to winter over in the home, and they look a bit scraggly and unsightly. This scenario doesnt have to happen. First of all, if you have small size plants that are not over grown, or are perhaps babies grown from seeds of the original mother plant this same year, those plants will be you rst choice to dig up and keep inside. If not, do not dig up huge weathered plants and try to bring them into your home. Many greenhouses and other garden establishments still have nice sized healthy plants which would have a much better chance to winter over in the home very nicely. The best plants to use for growing inside the home are chives, oregano, rosemary, and mints. Many people have tried to grow basil inside but the plant tires in a few weeks, and then never really look nice. If you have a greenhouse at home, your herbs will do well. But if you dont have a greenhouse, try to stick to ones that have more stamina as suggested. When you rst prepare to bring plants inside, either from your garden or a store purchase, look them over carefully for insects. Plant each plant in an appropriately sized pot, each pot being 1 inch larger around then the purchased plant, or at least 2 from the outer edge of the plant. Put the herbs in your brightest window, and check for water needs on a regular basis. Dont leave them standing in water, but dont let them completely dry out. Do not fertilize your herbs. If possible try to have your homes humidity level at about 40% or more. Most of the herbs need warmth, 65-75 to survive. However, Rose-

MARY STRAYER, MAsTER GARDENER, AUTHOR

mary would like you to place her in your coldest room in the home with at least some strong indirect light. She does not like the dry stagnant air in homes, thus prefers cooler areas and higher humidity. Our furnaces dry out our air, unless we have a humidier attached to it. Feel free to lightly mist the plants 2-3 times a week. When using the plants/leaves, do not pick them completely, but leave a few leaves for the plant to use to survive. If you see your plants rebounding come late winter/early spring, you have a chance to use this plant in your garden for next growing season. If they do not rebound, toss them come spring, and purchase new or plant seeds for the new seasons supply. Most of all enjoy your herbs this winter, and happy gardening!

In the opening round of the Division V state playoffs, Huron travelled an hour and a half away to take on the No. 2 seeded, and previously unbeaten, team from Liberty-Benton (Findlay, OH). Fans thought back to the recent playoff routs by Genoa when Huron fumbled the opening kick off back to the Eagles. A few plays later, Libertys RB Coombs powered his way into the end zone for the opening score. But both, the Tiger defense and offense buckled down. Huron would score the next 21 points while holding the opposition scoreless to take a 21-7 lead at the half. Spencer Maddox tied up the game with a 48 yard scamper down the far sideline. Then, following a long 74 yard scramble by Cody Thompson, RB Tommy Bogden charged the ball in from 2 yards out for a 14-7 lead. The third consecutive Tiger touchdown came on the sole TD pass of the game. It was an 11 yard across the body toss to Zach Souter. DurBY CHRIS MIScHLER

ing the second half, after the Eagles nal score, the Tiger defense took control of the game and Liberty-Benton was unable to maintain any sort of drive. QB Cody Thompson capped off another outstanding night (206 yards of total offense) with a 43 yard completion to WR Nick Stauffer who was pulled down from behind at the one. From there, Thompson called his own number and plowed through for the score. Huron (8-3) will now play Loudenville, in the second round of the playoff, on Saturday night at a neutral site in Medina. (ABOVE LEFT) The Huron defense, including Eric Weir (12), Nick Mix (16), and Tommy Bogden (35), close in on the opposition. (BELOW LEFT) RB Andrew Dowell runs hard into the Eagle secondary. (BELOW RIGHT) QB Cody Thompson scrambles to nd the open receiver.
