SACS Quick Start Guide

There are 2 options for licensing Bentley applications: Standalone or Networked workstations. Standalone workstation - computer system that requires an XML license file to be imported into License Management Tool in order to license installed applications. The XML file is checked out against a Bentley Hosted or User Deployed SELECTserver account. Networked workstation - computer system that is connected temporarily / permanently to a Bentley Hosted or User Deployed Server on a network. While connected, license can be checked in /out as required from a pool of available licenses on the contract. All license management questions/modifications are handled by the Bentley License team and Account Managers not SACS TSG. Your account manager can also assist with application pricing.

SELECT LICENSE - STANDALONE WORKSTATIONS (NODE LOCKED) OVERVIEW

An internet / network connection is not required to authenticate the license used by SACS V8i. In order to use the application, SACS requires a valid SELECT license file (*.XML) with license options checked out for extended period of time. SACS LICENSING INTRODUCTION

SACS is sold and licensed as packages plus individual modules. Each package contains a defined set of modules, e.g. the Fatigue Advance Dynamic Response package includes DYNPAC, Fatigue, Interactive Fatigue and Dynamic Response modules. License check-out and check-in is managed by the Executive. With this model if a user requests functionality that requires any of the modules in a package the complete package is checked-out. The Executive supports an automatic and a manual check-out/checkin mode which are described below.

AUTOMATIC MODE
In this mode the executive manages which package is selected for check-out; e.g. if a user initiates a Time History Earthquake analysis, the executive would query the server for a license that contains the necessary modules and attempt to check them out. In this mode the executive checks-out the package(s) when it starts the analysis and checks it back in when the analysis is complete.

MANUAL MODE
In this mode the user selects the license(s) to check-out/check-in. When running the analysis, the Executive prompts the user to check-out any required packages. These licenses would remain checked-out until the user checks them in manually in the SACS License Explorer or Bentleys license manager or the license period expires. This mode also handles the disconnected mode equivalent to taking the hardware lock off-site. In disconnected mode the license is still checked out to the site so if the user does not check it in it will remained tied-up for up to a maximum of 30 days. The same happens on the computer, the license will expire in a period of time if the user does not plug back in a refreshes the license. These procedures are managed using the SACS License Explorer described below.

SACS Quick Start Guide

SACS LICENSE EXPLORER

The SACS License Explorer has three basic functions: 1) Display a list of currently licensed SACS packages and modules. 2) Displays the check-out status of the licensed packages and modules. 3) Allows the user to check-out/check-in licenses when in manual mode and allows the user to set a Check-out Expiration Date.

SACS Quick Start Guide

29

PACKAGE/MODULE LICENSE SELECTION IN AUTOMATIC MODE

When launching a SACS program or executing an analysis, the Executive first looks to see if the requested module is individually licensed before looking for a best-fit package. For example, if a customer has the one license of each Offshore Structure, Marine, and Flotation and he/she runs an analysis that requires Flotation, the Executive will try to check-out the module Flotation first. If this license is not available it will then try to check-out the marine package.

RUNNING AN ANALYSIS IN AUTOMATIC MODE

License swapping Example: Company A licensed these packages: 2 licenses of Offshore Structure 1 license of Offshore Structure Enterprise 1 license of Fatigue Enterprise A user launches the Executive and checks-out one Offshore Structure package. The user then initiates an analysis that requires functionality not found in this package but is available in the Offshore Structure Enterprise. The Executive determines that it needs this licenses and checks for its availability. If the license is available it will then SWAP licenses by checking-out the Offshore Structure Enterprise license and checking-in the Offshore Structure license. If the more advanced license is not available, the Executive will display a message informing the user that the necessary modules are not available or not licensed. After the analysis is finished the Executive will attempt to swap back the licenses. If the original license is not available when it tries to swap back the license, it will cancel the swap and keep the currently checked-out license until the user exits the Executive or swaps licenses manually.

SACS Quick Start Guide

RUNNING AN ANALYSIS IN MANUAL MODE

License swapping does not take place in Manual Mode. In this mode the user must select the license to check-out. When running an analysis in manual mode the Executive still follows the same procedure of determining the required modules but it will prompt the user to checkout/check-in the necessary licenses.

SACS Quick Start Guide

31

SWITCHING FROM AUTOMATIC MODE TO MANUAL MODE"

This is done using the SACS license Explorer by selecting from the drop-down list.

WORKING IN DISCONNECTED MODE

Disconnected mode allows the user to check-out a license(s) and unplug from the network to work offsite. To work in disconnected mode the user has to first switch to Manual Mode then check-out the desired licenses using the SACS License Explorer. The Explorer allows the user to set the licensed expiration date to a maximum of 30 days. These licenses will remain checked-out until either the user reconnects and checks them in or the expiration date passes.

CANNOT COMMUNICATE WITH LICENSE SERVER AFTER CHECKING-OUT THE LICENSE

In the case that communication with the license server is broken the Executive will keep the license checkout for the default period of two days if in Automatic Mode or the selected expiration date if in Manual Mode.
