ANIMAL HUSBANDARY SERVICES

ANIMAL HEALTH: The Kolhapur Zilla Sahakari Dudh Utpadak Sangh Ltd (Gokul Milk Union) renders extension services, viz., breeding, feeding, management & also health care of the cows & buffaloes. These services are helpful for enhancing productivity & quality of the milk. Gokul Milk Union provides services for animal health through 40 mobile veterinary clinics with a team of 60 qualified & experienced veterinarians. These services are available for round clock at the farmers door step.

MASS DEWORMING PROGRAMME AND VACCINATION: De-worming programme is carried out to eradicate worms in dairy production. The purpose is to improve production and health of dairy animals. De-worming medicines are provided on subsidized rates. As a preventive major, animals are vaccinated against Foot & Mouth Disease and HS+BQ Diseases.

FARMERS ORIENTATION PROGRAMMES: Farmers orientation programmes are regularly carried out on demand of DCS at village level where farmers are groomed in respect of overall management of dairy animals.

ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION SERVICES: An artificial insemination (AI) is required to improve genetic characters of the animals i.e. cross breeding for enhancing the milk production. Extension services provided for 2010-11 under AI programme are as below.

No of Mobile A.I. centers No of A.I. cases No of pregnant animals No of calves borned by A.I.

401 1,78,600 60,635 52,479

Through A.I. programme, 25,000 to 30,000 improved calves of Buffalo and Cow are born every year. However, number of calves of cows & buffaloes born yearly were not matching to yearly milk production. After doing rout cause analysis we have concluded that the farmers were neglecting the newly born calves. The young calf needs to be fed two liters of milk daily, at least for a period of two months. The cost of this milk is Rs.55/- to Rs.60/-. Obviously, farmers prefer to sell this milk to meet their day-to-day needs. Consequently, the growth rate of calves is severely affected which also has adverse effect on the maturity age as well as on the productive life of dairy animals. Though India is the World's No.1 in milk production, it's per animal productivity performance is very poor (about 1.5 to 2.0 liters/day). India has a Cattle population of about 199.1 million and Buffalo population of about 105.3 million (Census 2007) as against the World's Cattle population of about 1350 million. Moreover, AI activities are performed since last 50 years and Embryo Transfer Technology is also used since last 10-12 years. As far as our Kolhapur district is concerned, the situation is not much different. Due to globalization of this business, milk production is on increasing side. However, there is no improvement in per animal productivity performance. Keeping above shortfalls in mind, Kolhapur Milk Union has conceived, designed & implemented unique Sustainable Upgraded Female Calf Rearing Programme" from 1st October 2005.

CALF REARING: AIMS & OBJECTIVES:

Rearing upgraded female calves at the farmers doorstep. To minimize initial three months feeding expenses of the calf by using 'Milk Replacer & Calf Starter'.

To monitor the health of the calf through the Union's Doctors to improve the maturity age & productivity life of the calf.

To motivate the farmers to bring the young female calves to the age of maturity and subsequently produce more quantity of milk by providing them incentives by way of subsidy. FEATURES OF THE PROGRAMME:The Pedigreed Registered Heifer gets Pregnant by 18+4 months of age for Cow and 36+4 months age for Buffalo, a subsidy of Rs. 3,OOO/- and Rs. 5,OOO/- respectively, is being paid by the Milk Union. Farmers have registered total 1, 21,506 nos. of female calves during the period from Oct. 2005 to March 2011. Gokul Milk Union has developed Mahalaxmi Milk Replacer & Calf Starter to reduce initial three months feeding expenses of the calf. The same has resulted in reducing the feeding cost by 55-60%. Palatability, high digestibility and good nutritive value of Mahalaxmi Milk Replacer & Calf Starter, have shown noticeable weight gain in calves. Mortality percentage of the calves has been considerably reduced by less than 5% & 15% in cow calves & buffalo calves respectively.

Due to implementation of Calf Rearing Programme', at farmers doorstep it is expected to have upgraded and crossbred calves which in near future would certainly fetch sustainable long term milk production enhancement in Gokul milk shed. PATENT BAGGED FOR MILK REPLACER: A Patent for 'Milk Replacer' for calves has been awarded to Union by Government of India.

INFERTILITY CAMP:Infertility camps are organized as per the demands of DCS, where free checkup and treatment are carried out to rule out the cause of infertility by expert veterinarians. FODDER FEVELOPMENT Gokul Milk Union not only renders extension services for taking care of animal health, but also provides extension services for fodder development for milk production.

To increase productivity of animals, nutritious fodder is required & for that Gokul provides seasonwise improved verities of fodder seeds & by considering the feasibility of cultivation, Sangh has decided to provide certain fodder seeds on 100% subsidy. Also for increasing palatability & nutritive value of available non-conventional fodder like paddy straw & wheat straw, urea treatments are practiced under our supervision. In addition to this improved multicut grass verities e.g. CO3, Marvel & also multicut Lucerne seed provided to milk producers. Lucerne is recommended for mix cropping with sugarcane. Gokul Milk Union provides indigenous fodder cutters & chaff cutters for utilizing cultivated fodder & also to minimize the losses of fodder. Gokul Milk Union has also prorogates silo pits/silage for enhancing keeping quality of fodder. During 2010-11 following Fodder Development Services are provided:

Fodder seed cultivated Improved varieties of multicut grass sets cultivated Indigenous Fodder cutter supplied Chaff cutters supplied to the farmers
