* Listed to be in Anaconda but not enough room for me to insert it.
That is the end of the first list that I had. Before I move on to the next list, I would like to
discuss the hand written notes on this document and a few other items. It is unknown who
did the hand-written part on this document or when they did it. Apparently it was done to
correct mistakes and to make updates. Following is a breakdown on these hand-written
corrections/updates:
# 23 Riding was crossed out and Writing was hand written, making #23 as Writing-bird.
#36 Inserted in Indian Name blank space, there was hand-written in that stated, Killed by
train 8/16/09". There is some writing above the name Moses Smith and my guess is that it
says, Dead.
#37 St. Ignatius School was wrote in same blank spot as #36.
Between #40 and #41 the name Rosie is written in as F, Dau., age 3. Perhaps this is a clue
that it was updated at least 3 year later or she was inadvertently left off the census.
#41 There was some writing but it has not been deciphered as to what it says.
Between #52 and #53 it is written, Baby born 8/31/07 or 09, F, dau., but no age.
#63 states that Sadie Black Tongue was at the Fort Shaw School.
#69 above the name Johnnie is writing that says, or Baptiste.
#74 Margaret is crossed out and the name Maria is written in.
#77 Above the name Joe Little Pine the word Dead is written.
#80 Above the name Ona-kaw-ao, the name O-nak-a-wao is written.
#81, 82, and 83 has writing indicating that they are the sons of Otter-in-his-hand.
#82 Next to the name Side Rock, the word Dead is wrote.
5

#84 and #85 indicate that these are children of Otter-in-hand. Whoever wrote it left out the
word, his.
#86 Next to the name Noon-skies the word Dead is wrote.
#87 was originally typed as F, Dau. And crossed out and changed to M, Son in writing.
#91 The Indian name was crossed out and Na-wa-ka-mi-ka-pik was wrote in. Also the
English name was crossed out and the name Sitting in Middle of Ground was wrote in.
#104 There was writing by the name Joe Mitchell but it has not been deciphered.
#109 In the blank space for Indian name, Widow of Side Rock (82) is wrote. There is
also writing I cannot decipher next to the English name.
Between #109 and #110 it is wrote, Dau. born 8/01/09", and the rest I cant decipher.
Between #113 and #114 there is a name wrote but it is not legible.
Between #114 and #115 there is a name that appears to be Cecilia, F, Dau. 8 mo.
(Page 6)
#116 In the blank space for Indian Name, Wife to No 1" is wrote. Also next to English
Name, M. To Standing Rock is wrote.
Between #116 and #117 in same space as Rosie it says, Young Son-born 8/20/09".
#122, 123, 124, 125, 126, 127 the last name is unreadable and I guessed the best I could. I
also checked a list of who was alloted land on the Blackfeet Reservation and found the
names William, Isabelle, Eliza, John, Se-ten, andJoseph, all with the last name of McGillis.
I think the last name of these people in the 1909 document changed their name to McGillis
by the 1911? Allotment document.
According to Duncan Standing Rock, one of his grandfathers were Round Day and he was
married to Light Hair. According to this document Light Hair was married to Round Sky.
This next list only has 17 names with 2 that are duplicated that I purposely included, which
I will explain later. This list is using the same form by the same person, but be sure to read
the difference on this form.

(Page 7)
There is some hand writing towards the top of this document but it is not deciphered.
#4 In the blank space for English Name, 1st Wife of Panato is wrote.
#16 In the blank space for Indian name and above Standing Rocks name, is wrote, Said
by Rocky Boy to be a Chippewa.
# 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15 is believed to be Denny but was on this census as Dinnie.
Both Light Hair and Standing Rocks name appears on both documents. Im not exactly
sure why this is. The second list is supposedly Canadian Indians that are affiliated with
Rocky Boys Band and that must be why there is a hand-written statement from Rocky
Boy indicating that Standing Rock is Chippewa.
Again, Light Hair (according to the first document) is said to be married to Round Sky but
Duncan Standing Rock said his granfather Round Day was married to her. No doubt there
is not only Indian names mis-wrote but also English names are incorrect in these
documents.
I attempted to type out these copies of the two documents that are now 97 years old. I also
had a couple of Cree speakers review the Indian names and was informed that there are
several mistakes on the correct spelling. In most cases I would have to put this blame on
Thralls W. Wheat or whoever he had type them up. These copies were from old BIA files
and in some cases the typewriter used, had the e, s, and o look quite similar, especially if
there was a line running through the letter, which there was in many cases.
There is a need to do further research on this document for the following reasons:
1. Where is Here? At least two places (and maybe more) that Rocky Boys Band were
around 1909 were Great Falls and Browning. Neither place was listed as a place where
people were at, during this Census.
7

2. The Indian names need to be corrected for historical purposes, and in some cases the
English name may need to be corrected too. Where the Indian names can not be
interpreted by a Cree speaker/reader, it may require sending them outside, perhaps to a
Ojibway speaker/reader, for they may be in a different language. We also need to try to
identify those that only show a Indian name, some may have had a English name also.
3. There seems to be a lot of names missing from this document. With further research,
Im sure names will surface. My next step is to compile and create a document to show
where people were during this census. In other words, so many in Cut Bank, so many in
Anaconda, etc. Then I plan on going over the list of who was allotted land on the Blackfeet
Reservation and see if there are names there that need to be added to this list. At one time
I read where there were 357 Rocky Boy Band members. That means we need to find about
200 more Indians. It is also unknown at this time who did not get enrolled in Rocky Boy
from this list, but Im sure that can be researched also.
4. I now plan on sending this list to Cree speaking staff to review it to make corrections.
