I was only 19 years old when President Kennedy was assassinated. I had been in the Pipefitters union only a couple of years then and all the union's across the nation was already campaigning to their members to vote to re-elect Kennedy. I wanted to vote for him but it was illegal for me since I wasn't yet 21 year's old. In the weeks preceding the assassination in all of President Kennedy's political meetings he had been stressing the importance of both Texas and Florida in order to win his re-election and he planned on making several visits to both states. On November 21 the day before his death he came to Houston where he delivered an address to a Latin American organization and attended a dinner for Houston's Congressman Albert Thomas. On the Friday morning of the President's assassination of November 22, 1963 before my leaving my home in Jacinto City for work I had loaded my deer rifle in my gun rack of my 1958 Chevy pickup truck for a weekend of deer hunting with my friends in Crockett, Texas. I then took off work at noon that day and before getting on the highway I first stopped in Galena Park at Woody's Barber Shop for a haircut. I was sitting in the barber's chair and Woody my barber was trimming around my ears with a sharp pointed pair of scissors and when the news of President Kennedy

being shot came over the radio it startled Woody so much he jabbed deep into my head behind my ear with the sharp pointed scissors. I began to bleed quite a bit and Woody said, "Oh my gosh I'm sorry but they just said on the radio that President Kennedy has been shot." Woody was so nervous and shaken by the news and my bleeding he could not finish cutting my hair. After the bleeding was stopped by applying cotton presses on the cut I then decided to go home to hear more of the shooting. After seeing some of the news I then decided to not go deer hunting so I could keep up with the news. Also I was afraid if I got on the highway and headed north the police may stop me since I had the high powered rifle in my truck because the news at that time was saying there may be several shooters and the police was on the alert all over the state for anything or anyone that could be a part of the assassination. At my age of 19 Lee Harvey Oswald the accused shooter was 5 years older than me at age 24 and the slain President was 46, 22 years older than Oswald. Later I served 3 terms as City Councilman, one term as Mayor and 11 years as President of the Police Officer's Association before my serving 2 years as Chief of Police.
