Introduction
What is ASL? Academic Service Learning provides students the experience they need to appreciate their course at it is applied in real life. It is also helps to expose the students to the environment where they can reflect on their lives and of the others and help them follow St.Vincents commitment to the poor. What is Architectural Interiors? It is the art of practice of planning and supervising the design and execution of architectural interiors and their furnishings.

Objectives
To be able to gain experiences for professional development. To recognize the needs of government employees, as well as the beginners of education. To establish a solution that fits their day to day services. To provide a comfortable place for Barangay Officials and Preschool students. To be able to propose new ideas for the improvement of the Barangay Hall. To apply what weve learned in Architectural Interiors and make everything possible.

Selecting the Site

In choosing the site for the ASL, students were asked to look for a site which is near the school (about 5 kilometers radius from the university), also a site which can be redesigned by the students. A student from group found a site in Barangay 385, Zone 39, District 3. It is a Barangay office with a nursery daycare attached to it. The site was a challenge for the students because of its dimensions. A small area with many furniture will be needed inside.

Budget Planning
The students from the Architectural Interiors were given a total of 6,000 php. for their ASL project. For the first visit in the site 2,000 php. were spent then the remaining 4,000 php. will be divided into two for the two groups. The budget given for the students were used for transportation, food and materials would be needed. Because of the lack of time and budget, students were not able to redesign the site by themselves. Students were just planned a proposed design for their barangay office and day-care, and present it to the chairman of the barangay.

Division of Labour
There are 19 members in our group and we assigned every member to their respective duties to smoothen the process of the project Architectural Interiors Page 4

Visiting the Site

We went to the site as a whole. But then soon divided into two groups, the 1st half of the class took pictures and took observations on the physical conditions of the site. The 2nd half took the dimensions and took further observations on the site.

Most of us were first timers to see the site because the only one who really knew the site was our classmate whom have presented our professor the site.

Since most of us saw the site for the first time, when we saw the Barangay, we observed the site, took pictures and took own analysis in ourselves.

Our professor then assigned us to get dimensions of the doors, windows, appliances and even the location of the switches and outlets.

While getting dimensions, our professor assigned one of us to have a sketch of the room to have a copy. And while sketching the room he is also listing the dimensions that we are getting.

Design Process
Design Philosophy: Design that is uncomfortable is a failed design. Style: Contemporary Design Concept: The idea of the design is to combine the barangay hall and the day care center in a contemporary way. It is to let the barangay have functional areas that can be converted into different use in times needed. The flexibility of the design is the key in achieving it. Design Consideration: Area: Since the area is too small, considering that it must be composed of both the barangay hall and the day care center, the group decided to merge the two rooms and just use panels to separate it during classes or necessary times. Spaces: It is observable that most barangay halls have a kitchenette inside it so the group decided to provide one on it. Aside from the kitchenette, toilet was also provided. Accessibility: Aside from the main door, the group provided a service door at the kitchenette since it is a provision. The toilet is provided as a common one so that it can be used by both the barangay captain and the councilors. Furnitures: To save space, folding table for the meeting was preferred. Since it is not always that the barangay officials held meetings. Users: The furnitures such as chairs and tables are based on the anthropometrics of the users. The day care center has furnitures that are appropriate for toddlers, while the baranagay hall has for adults. Ventilation: Air conditioner was provided but natural ventilation was also implemented through the provided windows. Openings: Instead of wall between the barangay hall and day care center, accordion door was used to maximize space.

STEP 1: STATING THE PROBLEM Based on the informations and observations that we have acquired, the main problem that weve seen was the lack of enough space that should be used for the office to perform not only functionally but effectively and smoothly.

STEP 2: LISTING DOWN POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS Lending ears one by one, the group lead by Mark Joseph Torres and Timothy John Nebalasca had came up with an innovative solutions for the offices possible outcome: Circulation: Giving this factor with a prime importance, the group had discussed how we can still maximized the space using the chosen furnitures yet still considering the flow of people coming in and out. Furniture: Giving an ambiance that suited well for an office, picking the furnitures that can be multipurposed and doesnt waste any needed space without taking the risks of its design. Ventilation: Taking the cross ventilation technique into considerations, the group also discussed how air flow can travel throughout the office.

STEP 3: LAYING OUT DESIGN Before making any final decisions, we first seek guidance for our Archl Interiors professor Archt Coma if we have arrived in the right solution.

STEP 4: PICKING NEW FURNITURES Quality of the furnitures doesnt need to be sacrificed for better design. Picking up furnitures that can really help the office aiming for quality services but still keeping the furnitures intact with the design philosophy and concept.

Observation
Chair (kindergarten) - The chair provided in the kindergarten was bit too high for the children to reach. Since they were just children, provide a tables and chairs that are appropriate in their height. Consider the textures and materials that will be used. Plastic is more advisable than made of wood because it is more safe and to avoid decaying. Shelves (kindergarten) Childrens can put their things into the shelves and somewhat art materials like papers or personal hygiene can do. At the same time, childrens things in their back pack or stroller will be lessen. Mat (kindergarten/optional) Provide a mat for the children so that during their free time or activities, they have a place to sit down and to play. It is common in the kindergarten to have a mat to avoid accidents and injuries. Color (kindergarten) The color that was used was white and blue. Commonly in a room of a kindergarten, the wall color usually has a variety of colors because it gets the childrens attention and it looks attractive to them. Conference Table (brgy.hall) This is where committee and members discuss their meetings. Conference area must be in private area because some of their discussions were confidential. Otherwise, we can use bifold door in this case. Office desk area (brgy.hall) A working area for the members where they can use computers for their paper works and to entertain a person who has schedule from theirs. This was located beside the entrance so that when committee has meeting they will not be disturb. Storage/Cabinet (brgy.hall) The storage and compilation files were located in the office desk so that documents and paper works is organized. Kitchen Amenities (brgy.hall) Equipments in the kitchen must be in compact. In our observation before, water dispenser was placed in the front of the entrance. As the solution, we compact all the amenities in one place to be organized.

Color (brgy.hall) The whole facility looks dark because of the color used. It is advisable to used light color for this facility. This light color will also help to look the room wider since the barangay hall has a tight area. Window Treatment (both) The larger use of window, the more natural ventilation will get inside. Using of rollers and blinds will help the facility more comfortable and gives more privacy. Lighting (both) In the day care and barangay hall, the use of natural lighting is more sufficient than artificial lighting especially when children were writing and drawing. The sight is one of the important parts to us so that we must care it.

Proposed Changes:
Use of accordion as splitter of barangay hall and day care center Inclusion of kitchenette and a common toilet Adding a service door Changing the furnitures Remove storage for wider office space Provide office room Using accordion door for daycare extension during vacancies Use of panels for storing accordion wall
