Using Spot Welds

You can use spot welds to connect two nearly parallel surfaces at a datum point.
Restrictions:

Surfaces < 15 from parallel from each other. Stresses can be inaccurate near weld. No beam releases for spot weld beam elements.

Requirements:

Surface references Point references Diameter Material

Before Spot Weld Connection

After Spot Weld Connection LectureNotes Spot Welds Use spot welds to connect two nearly parallel surfaces at a datum point you specify. Mechanica creates a spot weld entity that connects the two surfaces using a beam with a circular section to simulate the weld. Mechanica connects the two surfaces in a circular spot at a point, and transfers forces from one part to another. When working with spot welds be sure to keep the following in mind.

The surfaces that you connect must be within 15 of being parallel to each other. Spot welds transfer forces, but stresses close to the welds can be inaccurate. You cannot apply beam releases to the beams created with spot welds.

When creating a spot weld, you will need to specify the following:

Surface references: Two surfaces that you want to weld to each other with beam elements must be specified. Point references: The point or points on the surfaces where you want the spot weld beam elements to be created must be specified. Diameter: The diameter of the spot weld beam element must be specified. Material: The material that the spot weld beam element will be composed of must also be specified.

Best Practices If you are creating an assembly that has rivets, you can use spot welds to model the rivets. You should be aware that spot welds will add material to the model, and therefore the models mass in the analysis may appear greater than what is reported by Pro/ENGINEER. Procedure: Creating Spot Welds

Scenario
Create multiple Spot Welds in a model. CreateSpotWeld spot_weld.asm

Task 1. Open the Mechanica application and create Spot Welds.

1. Click Applications > Mechanica. 2. Click Weld from the Mechanica toolbar.

3. From the Type drop-down menu, select Spot Weld. 4. For the first surface reference, select the bottom surface of SHELF.PRT as shown in the left figure below. 5. For the second surface reference, select the top surface of U_CHANNEL.PRT as shown in the right figure below.

It may be helpful to zoom in close around the points you will be selecting in the next step.

6. To select the Point references, press CTRL and select PNT0 from SHELF.PRT and PNT0 from U_CHANNEL.PRT as shown in the figure.

7. Type 10 in the Diameter field and verify that the units field is set to mm. 8. Verify that the Material field is set to STEEL. 9. The dialog box should now appear as shown in the figure. Click OK to complete the Weld Definition and close the dialog box.

10. Note the creation of the Spot Weld feature, as indicated by the icon in the figure below.

11. Return to the Standard Pro/ENGINEER mode by clicking Applications > Standard. 12. Click Save from the main toolbar and click OK to save the model. 13. Click File > Close Window from the main menu. 14. Click File > Erase > Not Displayed > OK to erase the model from memory. This completes the procedure.
