AKSUM UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING & TECHNOLOGY QUIZ-I MENG-4807-IC ENGINES & RECIP.

MACHINES NAME______________________ _________ID NO_______________________Total:15 marks/Time: 1.30 hours

1. Derive an expression to determine the efficiency of a cycle which is working at constant pressure.(4marks)-(Diagram -1 mark,Expression-3 marks) 2. Write the four strokes an engine working at constant volume (1 mark) 3. The minimum pressure and temperature in an Otto cycle are 100 kPa and 27C. The amount of heat added to the air per cycle is 1500 kJ/kg. (i) Determine the pressures and temperatures at all points of the air standard Otto cycle. (ii) Also calculate the specific work and thermal efficiency of the cycle for a compression ratio of 8 : 1. Take for air : cv= 0.72 kJ/kg K, and = 1.4.(4marks) (8 answers-2 answer carry 1 mark8/2=4 marks) 4. The swept volume of a diesel engine working on dual cycle is 0.0053 m 3 and clearance volume is 0.00035m3 The maximum pressure is 65 bar. Fuel injection ends at 5per cent of the stroke. The temperature and pressure at the start of the compression are 80C and0.9 bar. Determine the air standard efficiency of the cycle. Take for air = 1.4 (3 marks) 5. Differentiate E.C engines with I.C engines(3 marks)
