Entrelac Stocking

Getting Started
This was the first entrelac pattern that was ever published by Knitability and now it is shared with all of you!

Abbreviations

Yarn Brown Sheep Lambs Pride R2 Worsted (85% Wool, 15% Mohair; 190 yds/ 4 oz): RH Any wool worsted weight yarn RS st(s) may be substituted for varying SSK results. Must not be superwash T1 if you are going to felt it. Approximate Yardage tog WS Required: 190 yds White - MC 125 yds Red CC1 125 yds Green CC2 Needles Size 4.0mm (US #) DPN and 16 circular Finished Size: Approx: 9 diameter x 24 deep Notions: Tapestry needle Gauge: 20 sts and 28 rows = 4" in Stockinet Stitch. Adjust needle size to achieve gauge

Stitch Patterns: 2x2 Corrugated Rib (Multiple of 4 sts): The directions below are for working in the round. *K2 with CC, P2 with MC; repeat from * for entire round being careful not to carry yarn behind too tightly. Entrelac Units When working triangles or rectangles turn work after every row unless indicated otherwise.
Triangle #1 (T1)

Row 1 (RS): K1. Row 2 and all WS rows: Purl sts just knit. Row 3: K2. Row 5: K3. Row 7: K4. Row 9: K5. Row 11: K6. Row 13: K7. Row 15: K8. DO NOT TURN WORK.
Rectangle #1 (R1)

Base Row: With the WS facing you, purl up your base # of sts along edge of T1 or R2. *Row 1 and all RS rows: K all sts. Row 2 and all WS rows: P all but the last st of R1, P2tog (1 st from R1 with 1 st from joining unit). Repeat from * until all sts from joining unit has been incorporated 16 rows.

Rectangle #2 (R2)

Base Row: With the RS facing you, knit up your base # of sts along edge of R1. * Row 1 and all WS rows: P all sts. Row 2 and all RS rows: K all but the last st of R2, ssk (1 st from R2 with 1 st from joining unit). Repeat from * until all sts from joining unit has been incorporated 16 rows.
Triangle #4 (T4)

Pick-up and knit 8 sts directly below your RH ndl working from top to bottom. Row 1 and all WS rows: P the stitches just worked. Row 2: K7, SSK the last st and 1 st from the previous section tog. Row 4: K6, SSK. Row 6: K5, SSK. Row 8: K4, SSK. Row 10: K3,SSK. Row 12: K2, SSK. Row 14: K1, SSK. Row 16: SSK

Stocking Leg:
Ribbing: Using double pointed needles, cast-on 80 sts with MC. Join without twisting and work 2x2 Corrugated Rib (see above) with MC and CC1 for 1. * K3, K2tog in MC; rep from * 15 more times to complete the rnd (64 sts). Leg up to Instep: Base Triangle Tier: With MC work T1 8 times using 8 sts as the base number of sts. Tier 1: With CC2 work R1 8 times using 8 sts as the base number of sts. Tier 2: With MC work R2 8 times using 8 sts as the base number of sts. Tier 3: With CC1 work R1 8 times using 8 as the base number of sts. Tier 4: Repeat Tier 2. Tier 5: Repeat Tier 1. Tier 6: Repeat Tier 2. Tier 7: Repeat Tier 3. Tier 8: Repeat Tier 2. Tier 9: Repeat Tier 1. Instep (Tier 10): With MC work R2 4 times using 8 as the base number of sts. HINT: The heel for this sock is worked after the rest of the sock is completed. To prepare for this, a short row of waste yarn is worked which will be removed later to provide raw sts for working the heel. Prepare for Afterthought Heel: Cont with MC, work T4 4 times using 8 as the base number of sts. Break off MC. Turn work; P32 sts using a waste yarn. With MC, on RS, work T1 4 times using 8 sts as the base number of sts.

Stocking Foot
Tier 11: Repeat Tier 1. Tier 12: Repeat Tier 2. Tier 13: Repeat Tier 3. Tier 14: Repeat Tier 2. Tier 15: Repeat Tier 1. Prepare for Toe: With MC, work T4 8 times using 8 as the base number of sts. Break off MC. Toe and Heel Using the CC1, * K4, inc 1 st. Repeat from * 15 more times. Divide sts, 20 sts per needle, onto 4 st double pointed needles making sure that 1 needle lines up with the beginning of the heel opening. **On first needle, K1, K2tog, K remaining sts. On second needle, K to within 3 sts, SSK, K1. On third needle, K1 K2tog, K remaining sts. On fourth needle, K to within 3 sts, SSK, K1. Work next round even. Repeat from ** until 6 stitches remain on each needle. Turn stocking inside out. Slip all stitches onto 2 needles, 1 needle for the top and 1 needle for the bottom of the toe. Join with a 3-needle bind-off. After-thought Heel: Pull out waste yarn leaving raw stitches to be picked up using 4 double pointed needles 64 sts. Repeat the instructions used for the Toe.

Finishing:
Using tail from cast-on, create a loop to hang stocking by and anchor securely. Weave in all loose ends. Felt if desired.
