Do a favor for local economy: Shop in Auburn this year
ow the holiday season got here so fast, I cannot fathom – did we go to a 10month calendar while I wasn’t looking? Nevertheless, here I am once again window-shopping for holiday gifts as I take my daily walks down Lincoln Way and High Street. By the way, I’m a relative newcomer here, so can someone tell me why it’s called High when it’s actually the lower of the two main streets through town? Most of us have heard about the wisdom in buying locally, and my wife, Valerie, and I decided to get serious about it last year. We bought all of our Christmas gifts without leaving town. In fact, we challenged ourselves to shop without ever getting into our car. That’s one of the beauties of living two blocks from Placer Arts and the Monkey Cat. It was so much fun that we are going to do it again this year.
John Bowman Guest Columnist

If you haven’t tried it, you might be surprised how many gifts you can pick up with a sixor seven-block stroll. We found all we needed by visiting places like the Wildflower, Auburn Drugs, Avantgarden, Marilyn’s Fashion-a-tion, and the Chocolate Shoppe on Lincoln Way (or Aunt Flo’s down on High Street). A new shop this year, where you can grab a bite or peruse a wide array of candies, cookies and other nifty items is the Gold Rush Emporium and Tea. This year I am definitely going to pick up something at the new Man Cave shop across from Tre Pazzi. The Man Cave, with its knowledgeable and

affable owner, Kirk, has in its window an old photo of Babe Ruth in a Boston Red Sox uniform – perfect for my home office (yep, I’m going to give myself a present, too). Valerie is sure she can find some tasty and healthy goodies at Gaia Basket to create a gift basket for our vegetarian daughter. And I know she’ll venture across the street to the upscale consignment shop Get Dressed! at its new location and to the nearby Vintage Redeemed, because she doesn’t need a holiday shopping excuse to pop into those places. Also in that block is my favorite bookstore, Winston Smith Books, where I got three used books as gifts last Christmastime. And I haven’t even mentioned the myriad other jewelry, shoes, clothing, and bicycle shops that line these two streets. And how about South Side Art Center, where we were delighted to discover a piece of

art by a friend of ours in the window and we promptly bought it. Of course, there are plenty of places to stop in for a bite if your energy starts to flag and you need to be refueled. So, what do we accomplish by doing our shopping close to home? Here are a few of the benefits: • Saving gasoline by not driving down the hill to the malls. • Holding down our blood pressure by avoiding Mall Madness (no offense, Roseville, but ... ) • Helping the environment by not using our car so much. • Contributing to the health of the city by keeping our sales tax receipts here. • Supporting locally owned businesses, and keeping jobs here. • This might be the best reason: Talking with shop owners who actually know about their products. That’s something you

don’t get much of at the big-box stores. In fact, one shop owner said she didn’t have what I was looking for but pointed me to another store right down the street – she said she knew they had what I wanted. I don’t want to end this without saying that buying something from a local artist or crafts person can be especially gratifying. You might find something big, like a painting or a sculpture, or something smaller and less expensive like scarves, jewelry or quilts. But, lest I begin to sound too much like Martha Stewart, I’m heading back to the Man Cave. I want to see if any of those old San Francisco Giant souvenir miniature baseball bats are still available.

Keep your wallet full and spirits bright with these savvy spending tips
hanksgiving comes late this year, which means a shorterthan-usual holiday shopping season. If you’re not the type to buy gifts throughout the year, getting an early start on holiday shopping can help ensure you have enough time to find gifts for everyone on your list — and perhaps, most importantly, save money. Here are three things to do now to save money and time this holiday season:

likely appear on your list than you originally planned. Holiday shopping can be overwhelming, but if you approach it with an organized plan, you’re likely to avoid overspending and can better stick to your budget. Gift cards are a great option this year, since they are the top gift people want to give and receive according to a recent shopping survey from Discover.
Savvy shopping tip:

Whether you’re brave enough to face the crowds on Black Friday, prefer the convenience of Cyber Monday, or support your local merchants on Small Business Saturday, shopping these big sales is a great way to stick to your budget and make a large dent in your holiday shopping list.
Do your research on sales and promotions
According to the survey, Americans are most influenced by sales and promotions when it comes to their holiday spending plans. In fact, 70 percent of consumers are planning to take advantage of Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals. Whether you’re brave enough to face the crowds on Black Friday, prefer the convenience of Cyber Monday, or support your local merchants on Small Business Saturday, shopping these big sales is a great way to stick to your budget and make a large dent in your holiday shopping list. Doing your homework before making holiday purchases can also help you save even more. Price monitoring sites, like PriceGrabber, can compare and contrast prices for more than one million items, including electronics, appliances and clothing, and can be accessed right from your mobile

device. Your credit card may offer extra rewards on online purchases this season that’ll help you save money on holiday gifts.
Savvy shopping tip:

Mark your calendars with the dates of big sales and keep coupons in your wallet so you can use them at a moment’s notice. If you’re shopping online, do a quick search for coupon codes that provide extra discounts, as well as free shipping or gift wrap.

Create a list (and budget) for everyone on your list
Greet the holiday season with cheer by keeping an organized list of names of everyone you need to shop for and an estimated budget for each. From family and friends to hair stylists and teachers, more names will

Look into your credit card rewards programs to see if you can cash in your accumulated rewards for gift cards, some of which are offered at a discount. Redeeming rewards for store gift cards is one of the easiest and most valuable ways to save cash, which means you won’t need to reach as deep into your pockets this season.

Use credit card benefits and rewards to save extra cash
Many credit card companies provide rebates, rewards and discounts on holiday essentials — at no added cost. Once the hustle and bustle of the season is over, you might find an item you want to return,

but what happens if your purchase is no longer eligible? You won’t have to write it off as a loss if the purchase was made with a credit card that offers a return guarantee. These complimentary benefits can keep you feeling merry this holiday season. Savvy shopping tip: Use a credit card that provides added security and purchase protection including warranties and return guarantees that will help you save in the long run. Taking a little extra time to shop smart and plan ahead will help you save and stay organized while shopping for holiday gifts and essentials. You may be surprised by how many resources are available to help stretch your budget further this holiday season.

Buying technology for seniors is easier than you think
inding the perfect gift for mom and dad or grandma and grandpa often seems impossible. If they’re like a lot of seniors, they’re fairly well settled and don’t have long wish lists. Plus, it seems that many of the hottest gift ideas are tech devices, certainly not something that would be of interest, right? Think again. Seniors aren’t as wary of technology as some might think. In April 2012, the Pew Internet and American Life Project reported that more than half of the 65 and over population were online and using email. The number is growing as seniors see the advantages of technology, from convenience to safety benefits. And that’s good news for kids and grandkids in desperate need of great gift ideas. Help the seniors in your life manage more from the comfort of their home. A new laptop or tablet can be a valuable tool for communicating with loved ones, managing finances and even taking care of some shopping. More than the gift itself, they’ll appreciate the time you take to show them the ropes with a video chat program or online bill pay services, not to mention getting them connected with family and friends on social media.

Need help finding that perfect guy gift?
Fill his garage or man cave
Every guy has a little space in the home he likes to call his own. For some it’s the garage, for others it’s the man cave in the house, and for others maybe the garage is his man cave. Wherever he chooses to relax, he might enjoy a personalized beer pitcher or an under-the-counter fridge. His garage will also look great with a new toolbox or shop stool.

The Amazon Kindle starts with a 6-inch screen, but larger sizes are featured on certain models. Seniors can increase fonts to a comfortable size for reading, and they don’t need to spend a bundle on books as many libraries now lend e-books. Keeping connected with parents and grandparents may be the biggest gift of all, so don’t shy away from the gifts that can make that happen. Seniors may surprise you with their tech savvy.

uys can be the hardest people to shop for, and finding the perfect gift has become a daunting holiday tradition. Sure, they will appreciate the thought behind another bundle of tube socks — and might even wear them — but there are gifts that bring a wow factor and make even the most stoic guys light up like a little kid.

Add to a collection
Adding to a guy’s collection is a great gift idea. If you’re unsure about what to choose, ask him what he collects and what he needs to take it to the next level. He will be flattered you’re showing interest and you’ll gain valuable insight into that perfect gift.

Do you have difficult-to-shop-for people on your list?
Here are some unique gift ideas that ‘wow’
hen creating a holiday shopping list for gifts for friends and family, there is always at least one impossible-to-shop-for person on that list. Maybe they’re the type of person who doesn’t need anything, or are not involved in hobbies that cater easily to gift ideas. Whatever the reason, each holiday season you struggle to find the perfect gift to celebrate the season. “Sometimes coming up with gift ideas for friends and family is a challenge,” says Anna Post, great-great granddaughter of Emily Post and co-author of Emily Post’s Etiquette, 18th Edition. “I recommend taking a step back and looking at the

For the youngsters
Children have plenty of electronic gadgets to keep them busy, so consider going a different direction with the gift of origami. Beginners can start off easy with Scholastic Follow the Directions Art Easy Origami, which includes all the paper supplies and directions needed to create fun farm animals, rockets and flowers. As a benefit, origami folding helps children with fine motor skills, reading, counting as well as identifying colors and shapes. Another fun and educational gift idea is Appleletters, which contains 110 tiles with letters, and games that encourage children to spell out words.

For the entertainer
Hosting a dinner party often involves uncorking a bottle of wine. Many people will open the bottle early to let it breathe, but the small opening at the top of the wine bottle doesn’t allow air to properly oxygenate the drink. For this person, a wine aerator would be a great holiday

If you have someone on your shopping list who is constantly taking notes for shopping lists, calendar scheduling or even copying down recipes, the quilted ARC leather notebook system will be sure to please. It comes in three colors — teal, pink and black — and can be

Find the perfect gift for the music lover on your list
hile most people truly enjoy the holiday season, it can also bring a considerable amount of stress. One commonly reported cause of holiday stress is shopping for gifts. Selecting the right gift for someone can be a daunting task. When choosing a gift, try to find something that relates back to the recipient’s interests, hobbies or pastimes. One popular hobby for people of all ages is listening to music. To make this holiday shopping season a little bit easier, here are a few ideas sure to “wow” the music fan on your gift list.

For record aficionados
Record sales have seen a recent resurgence. Most major labels offer LP versions of newly released music and a growing number of classic albums are being reissued on vinyl. The obvious gift to consider for a record neophyte on your shopping list is a good turntable. Records should always be stored upright, never stacked one on top of another, so storage cases that securely keep albums vertical are perfect for record newbies. Search your neighborhood record store for first pressings, which deliver audio quality close to the original master disc.

o help be a smarter shopper this holiday season, consider putting these tips to use:

Keep the deals and discounts organized
At this time of year, everyone’s inbox is flooded with promotions with varying expiration dates. More than half of holiday shoppers will shop online this season, according to the National Retail Federation, but you’ll be ahead of the game with your promotions organized for quick access.

Share your wish lists
Many families create wish lists to help in finding the perfect gift for each recipient — you wouldn’t want anyone receiving another fruit cake! Use visuals to remove any confusion about what you really want by uploading and sharing a photo wish list on SkyDrive. That way,

Is your online shopping is secure?
Identity theft is a big concern during the holiday season, and keeping your credit card and account information secure should be a priority, especially when shopping online. Start first with the Internet browser
