A Story of Hope
Dear Friends, The season of giving thanks is upon us, and I am reminded I have so much to be thankful for. I am honored to hold the position of Interim Executive Director for the We Care Program, and to be serving my community in this most vital way. As many of you know, following the Modesto Bee’s feature story this past Sunday, I have had my own experience with homelessness. Following the breakup of my marriage, and having lost my home, I struggled along for a couple of years trying to “hold it all together” for my three sons and I; however we eventually lost it all. Just seven short years ago, we too were homeless in Turlock, living in our vehicle. I felt lost, incapable, worthless as a parent and citizen. With emotional, spiritual, and sometimes financial support from many individuals and organizations in our community, I began the process of putting it all back together. I met a wonderful man who will become my husband next spring. We worked, volunteered, kept busy, and found purpose, slowly rebuilding a life for ourselves and the boys. I returned to school. Today I am proud to say I have earned three college degrees, including my Masters this past May. In addition to my work here at We Care, I have been hired as an instructor at California State University Stanislaus in the Sociology Department. We have bought a home, and our sons are thriving, the oldest now a college student! We are doing well. Our family is humbled by the outpouring of care and kind words from this community. We have been blessed to be able to rebuild a good life for ourselves and the children, but their father has not been so fortunate. I know that for all the successes I may realize, all the good I can do for my sons, their greatest need is that their father would be restored. I can’t make that happen, but this is why I believe so strongly in the We Care Program. I see him in the face of every homeless man who walks through our doors, and I know there is hope. I believe there is hope for each and every one of us who struggles, and that is why I do what I do.
With Gratitude,

Thank You Sierra Health for your generous contribution of $10,000 to support the We Care Program! That’s 555 shelter nights!
Another shelter season is under way, and with the wet and frigid weather upon us we are running near capacity each night. As we welcome in shelter guests each evening, wet and weary, seeking respite from the streets they call home, we are reminded that this place of refuge is made possible by the generosity of our dedicated supporters. Though our doors open for emergency shelter each November 15th, our work for each season begins with the closing of the last. The We Care Program staff and Board of Directors wish to thank you for your continued commitment and compassion for the least fortunate in our community.
