Nodoubtyourecallaprofessorwhohadanimpactonyousomeonewhomadeadifferenceworking withstudentssomeonewhoinspiredthemtoreachgreaterheightsthantheyimagined.Youmay havebeenoneofthosestudents.Perhapsaprofessorhelpedopennewdoorsforyou,leadingto newopportunities.Youmayevenhavethoughtthatsomedayyouwouldliketobeapartofa professionthatchangeslivesbyhelpingindividualstobethebesttheycanbe. Duringyourprofessionalcareeryoumayhaveencounteredanumberofissuesforwhichadditional insightswouldyieldsignificantdividendsquestionslikeHowcanweimproveauditquality?,How canwemaketheauditprocessmoreeffective?,HowcantheU.S.incometaxsystembedesigned togenerategreatercompliance?,orHowdoyoumeasuretheimpactofataxpolicychangeon taxescollected?Perhapsyouhavewishedforthetimetoaddressissuesliketheseandcontributeto theadvancementoftheaccountingprofession. Ifyouhaveapassionforchanginglivesandhaveanintellectualcuriositythatinspiresadesirefor advancingthebodyofknowledgeinaccounting,youpossessthetwokeyingredientstobeinga successfuluniversityaccountingfacultymember.Teachingandresearcharethetwomainrolesof accountingprofessors. Thetimehasneverbeenbettertoconsiderbecominganaccountingprofessor.Currently,thereisa severeshortageofaccountingdoctorates,especiallyinauditingandtax.Basedonexpected retirementsofaccountingfacultymembersintheUnitedStatesoverthenextseveralyearsandthe potentialgrowthinaccountingenrollments,theshortageisexpectedtoincreaseoverthenextfour tosixyears.Largelybecauseofthesevereshortageofdoctoralaccountingfaculty,accountingfaculty membersareamongthehighestcompensatedfaculty.Doctoralgraduatesinaccountingusuallyhave theirchoiceofthegeographiclocationstolaunchtheiracademiccareers.Whilebeingafaculty memberismuchmorethananinetofivejob,facultymembersfindconsiderableflexibilityinwhen theydotheirworkoveraweekstime.Theyalsohaveflexibilityintheareasofresearchtheymay pursue. Tomakealongtermcareertransitionfrompracticetothecampusclassroom,adoctoratein accountingisrequired.Whileduringtheirdoctoralprogramstudentsgainexperienceinclassroom teaching,themainfocusinmostaccountingdoctoralprogramsispreparingstudentstoconduct meaningfulresearchusingadvancedquantitativemethods.Mostprogramsarefouryearsinlength withsomerequiringfiveyears. OverviewoftheAccountingDoctoralScholarsProgram Inresponsetothegrowingshortageofacademicallyqualifieduniversityaccountingfacultymembers,especiallythose withrecentpublicaccountingexperienceinthepracticeofauditingandtax,concernedpractitionersatthebiggestCPA firmsinitiatedcreationoftheAccountingDoctoralScholars(ADS)Programin2008andcommittedfundingoveraneight yearperiodfortheprogram.Theyhavebeenjoinedbymorethan60otherofthenationslargestCPAfirmsandthe majorityoftheStateCPASocietiesincommittingmorethan$17milliontofundtheprogram. TheADSProgramprovidesfundingforfourenteringclassesofupto30individualseachyeartohelpthemmakea permanenttransitiontoteachingandresearchattheuniversitylevel.TheADSProgramsupportsapplicationto accountingdoctoralprogramsandalsoprovidesastipendof$30,000foruptofouryearsofenrollmenttoindividuals committedtoteachandresearchinauditingortaxataU.S.AACSBInternationalaccrediteduniversityuponcompletion oftheirdoctorate.Thefirstgroupoffundedstudentswillbegintheirdoctoralstudiesinthefallof2009. EligibilityCriteria TobeeligibletobeconsideredasanAccountingDoctoralScholarforenrollmentinthefallof2010,candidatesmust meetthefollowingcriteria: Haverecent,significantandmeaningfulworkexperienceofatleastthreeyearsinpublicaccountingin auditingortax.Partofthepublicaccountingworkexperiencemustbewithinthelastthreeyears. Provideawrittenstatementofacommitmenttoacareertransitiontoteachingandresearchinauditingor taxatanAACSBInternationalbusinessaccrediteduniversityintheUnitedStatesuponcompletionofa doctoralprograminaccountingwithanemphasisinauditingortax; Fulfillapplicationrequirements,e.g.,haveanacademicrecorddemonstratingpotentialforsuccessin advancedgraduatework;haveaGraduateManagementAdmissionsTest(GMAT)scoreofthatwillbeno morethanfiveyearsoldbyMayoftheyearofpotentialenrollmentandthatiscompetitiveforadmission tomajordoctoralprogramsinaccounting,e.g.,650orhigher;andsupplyappropriatelettersof recommendation; BeaU.S.citizenorpermanentresident;and Commit,ifselectedasanADSprogramScholar,toapplyingforadmissiontooneormoredoctoral programsinaccountingatanADSprogramparticipatinguniversitytopursueauditingortaxasateaching andresearchfocus. AssistanceProvidedtoADSProgramScholars ADSprogramScholarswillreceiveassistancewithidentifyingandapplyingtoaccountingdoctoralprograms.Oncethey enrollinadoctoralprograminaccountingataparticipatinguniversity,theywillreceiveastipendof$30,000peryear foramaximumoffouryears.ThestipendispaidbytheAICPAFoundationonbehalfofthesponsoringfirmsand organizationstotheuniversityfordistributiontothestudentundereachparticipatinguniversityspolicesand proceduresfordistributionofgraduateassistantshipstipends.Hostuniversitiesmaysupplementthestipendfrom fundingfromothersourcesprovidedthenumberofslotsfordoctoralprogramenrolleesisnotdiminished.ADS programsponsorsexpectADSScholarswillalsoreceiveothersupportfromtheiruniversitiesorothersources.Ifthe requiredprogramofstudyextendsbeyondfouryears,thestudentshostuniversityisexpectedtoprovidefinancial supportforanadditionalyearequivalenttothatavailabletootherfifthyearstudents. ADSScholarswillhavetheopportunitytoserveasgraduateresearchassistantsduringthemajorityoftheirprogram, therebydevelopingtheirresearchskillsundertheguidanceofaresearchfacultymemberinauditingortax.Inaddition, ADSScholarswillbeprovidedtheopportunitytogainsomeclassroomteachingexperiencebeforecompletionoftheir programofstudies.

WhatUniversitiesLookforinProspectiveStudents Doctoralprogramsinaccountingseektoprepareindividualstoexcelbothatteachingandresearch.Consequently, candidatesfordoctoralstudyarescreenedforevidenceofboththeiraptitudeandpotentialabilitytosucceedinthe classroomandinpublishedresearch.Mostprogramsdonotrequireamastersdegree,althoughtheabsenceofa Mastersdegreemayextendtheprogramofstudybyoneortwosemestersformanydoctoralprograms.Mostprograms requireaGraduateManagementAdmissionsTest(GMAT)scorewithinthelastfiveyearsofatleast650withmany programslookingforascoreofatleast700.PleasenotethattheaverageGMATofcandidatesinitiallyselectedasADS Scholarsforfall2009enrollmentwas718.UniversityapplicationdeadlinesrangefrommidDecembertoearlyspring. IndevelopingatimetablefortakingtheGMATonatimelybasis,candidatesshouldconsiderdevelopingastudy scheduleand/orseektoenrollinaGMATpreparatorycourseaspartoftheirpreparationfortakingtheGMAT. Candidatesmayexpecttoreceivepartialresultsuponcompletionoftheexamatthetestsite.Thefullofficialscorethat includestheresultsofscoringtheessayportionoftheexammustfiledwiththeapplicationtotheADSProgram.The officialGMATscoreisusuallyavailableabouttwentydaysaftercompletingthetest.Candidatesmayobtaincomplete informationforschedulingandtakingtheGMATatand/orforsecuringacopyoftheGMATInformationBulletinat http://www.gmac.com.
