AT&T Partners with Valliant High School to Highlight Dangers of Texting While Driving
AT&T partnered with Valliant High School, local legislators and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol to remind student drivers that texting while driving is a dangerous practice. AT&T is a leading partner in the nationwide "It Can Wait" movement, an initiative aimed at educating students on the dangers of distracted driving and curbing the practice. The event included a viewing of "From One Second to the Next," a Werner Herzog-produced documentary that chronicles the negative consequences encountered by several families impacted by distracted driving accidents. The film has been used nationwide and is a powerful tool to deter drivers from this dangerous practice. "Texting and driving is a real danger," said Oklahoma State Senator Jerry Ellis. "We must work together to ensure that drivers of all ages understand that there is no text or email worth serious injury or death." As a company, AT&T has been at the forefront of efforts to educate drivers to the dangers of texting while driving and has made a proactive push to educate all wireless users -- particularly teenagers. "This is a life and death matter. I applaud AT&T and Valliant High School for partnering together to educate the next generation of drivers to help make prevention of distracted driving a reality," said State Representative Curtis McDaniel. "Texting while driving greatly increases your chances of being involved in an accident," said Jason Winborn of AT&T Oklahoma. "Sadly, many people still don't think twice about picking up a phone to answer an email or text while behind the wheel. I hear from far too many people whose lives have been forever changed by a textingwhile-driving accident, and together we want to spread the word about how deadly a single text can be. We'd like to see texting and driving become as unacceptable as drinking and driving." It Can Wait is a national movement tapping into the power of social media and personal networks to make texting and driving as unacceptable as drinking and driving. It urges drivers to visit www.ItCanWait.com , where they can pledge not to text and drive, and share their pledge with others via Twitter (#ItCanWait) and Facebook. It also offers a host of educational resources and information on the issue.
