Application

The MiCOM P125 series is suitable for all applications where directional overcurrent and directional earth fault protection is required. The integration of many functions provides complete protection for a wide range of overhead lines and underground cables, from distribution to transmission voltage levels. It is suitable for solid earthed, resistance earthed. Inductance earthed (Petersen coil) isolated system. A comprehensive suite of overcurrent protection provides an economic solution to complex applications. The fig.1a shows the insertion of P126 for a general distribution underground line. The fig. 1b shows the P127 applied to parallel feeders. The MiCOM P125 range relays are also applicable in generator and in generator transformers schemes. A range of communication protocols allows connection with many external devices thus providing remote programming control and extraction of information.

Protection and Control functions

Undercurrent

Three phase and single phase tripping is provided for overcurrent and directional protection function.

Phase Directional overcurrent

MiCOM P126 and P127 relays provide undercurrent function. This function allows typical applications such as lost of load detection and circuit breaker failure.

Broken Conductor

Three independent stages are available for directional/nondirectional overcurrent protection. Each stage may be selected as non-directional or directional (forward/reverse). All stages have definite time delayed characteristics, the first stage may also be independently set to one of twelve IDMT curves. The IDMT stage has reset definite and IDMT timer to reduce clearance times where intermittent faults occur. The phase fault directional elements are internally polarised by quadrature phase-phase voltages, and will make a correct directional decision down to 0,5V with Vn=57-130V or 2.0V with Vn=220-480V. A synchronous polarising signal is maintained for 500ms over the delay time till 5s maximum, to ensure that the instantaneous and time delayed overcurrent elements operate correctly for close-up three phase faults.

Earth Directional overcurrent

Phase overcurrent

Three independent stages are available for overcurrent protection. All stages have definite time delayed characteristics, the first stage may also be independently set to one of twelve IDMT curves. The first stage has reset DMT and IDMT timer to reduce clearance times where intermittent faults occur.

This protection operates from earth fault current directly measured using a separate CT. The sensitivity can be choice by ordering code. The polarising voltage may be measured using a directly VT or may also be derived from residual connection of the three phase to phase VTs. Three independent stages are available for directional/nondirectional earth fault protection. All stages have definite time delayed characteristics, the first stage may also be independently set to one of twelve IDMT curves. The IDMT stage has reset DMT and IDMT timer to reduce clearance times where intermittent faults occur. Each directional stage is composed of a residual overvoltage element, an earth fault overcurrent element and the angle between residual voltage and earth fault current. Each non-directional stage is a standard overcurrent element.

The broken conductor protection detects unbalanced conditions caused by broken conductors, mal operation of single-phase switchgear or by single phasing conditions.

Negative phase sequence overcurrent

Negative phase sequence overcurrent is also designed for broken conductor detection when earth fault protection are not enable or not sensitive enough (e.g. broken conductor on load side). Instantaneous and time (DMT or IDMT) negative sequence overcurrent setting stages is the same as the phase and earth overcurrent stages.

Thermal overload

Wattmetric

The sensitive earth fault protection is also suitable for Petersen Coil earthed systems

using wattmetric protection. Two stages are available and have definite time delayed characteristics.

Thermal overload protection is suitable to protect transformer and cables for their particular thermal characteristic. MiCOM P126 and P127 relays include a thermal overload based. Alarm and overload stages are fully programmable to match each device requirement.

Undervoltage

Two independent stages with definite time elements are

available. Each stage can be configured in AND / OR logic mode.

Overvoltage

Two independent stages with definite time elements are available. Each stage can be configured in AND / OR logic mode.

correctly when used in a cascade scheme. The selective relay scheme logic function can be enabled or disabled by the user as required.

Protection and control elements can easily be assigned to any output. All inputs and outputs are freely configurable.

Cold load pick up

Residual Overvoltage

Residual over-voltage protection is available for detecting earth faults in high impedance earthed or insulted system. The neutral voltage can be measured directly using a VT transformer or derived in according to the insertion mode of the phase voltage. An independent stage with definite time element is available. It is named as 4th stage.

Cold load pick-up temporarily raises the phase overcurrent, earth overcurrent, thermal status, negative sequence overcurrent settings following closure of the circuit breaker, allowing the protection settings to be set closer to the load profile.

Latching of the outputs relay

Any of the output relays can be latched, excluded the trip command relay (relay n.1). The associated functions to trip command relay can be latched. Reset of all outputs and trip commands is possible by logic input, a push button on front HMI or through the local area network.

Circuit breaker failure protection

Blocking logic

When MiCOM P125 relays are used in critical networks, management of protections must take care of surrounding devices. 2 blocking logic inputs can be configured independently from each other to block any combination of the selected elements (e.g. current elements, thermal overload etc.) Each blocking signal freezes its associated memory (timer or thermal state) after drop off, it restart from the pre-blocking value and status if conditions are still present.

Circuit breaker failure protection may be used for tripping upstream circuit breakers and also the local secondary trip coil when a local breaker failure is detected.

Autoreclose Setting groups

External conditions may request the need of different settings. MiCOM P126 and P127 relays provide two setting groups including all the protection, automation features and monitoring functions. The switching between group 1 and group 2 can be achieved locally, remotely, via a dedicated logic input. All settings are stored in E2PROM (non-volatile rewriting memory)

Selective relay scheme logic

Programmable inputs and outputs

It provides three pole multi-shot autoreclose, setting change during dead and reclaim time whether enable and virtual reclose when two CBs in series MV distribution system using fuse are present. The user may select which protection elements and/or a digital input may start any of four shots independently. Each shot has independently settable dead and reclaim time. A counter stores the number of reclose commands incremented with each reclose order.

P125 range relay includes selective relay scheme logic. A dedicated digital input can temporarily alter the time delay settings in response to a downstream relay phase/earth fault start condition. This function allows the MiCOM relays to discriminate

MiCOM P125 range include up to 7 logic inputs and 9 logic outputs including watch dog. For P125 range two of output relays are change over type. Change over output type is typically used for tripping commands.

Monitoring and measurement

Circuit-Breaker monitoring Preventive circuit-breaker maintenance is the advance function provided by the MiCOM P126 and P127 with adjustable closing and opening time measurements and breaker failure protection.

All phase currents I and I during faults are memorised and summed. Trip Circuit Supervision [TCS] MiCOM P126 and P127 relays allow trip circuit supervision via a specific input. Result of this monitoring can be locally or remotely transmitted. Measurements MiCOM P125 relays monitor permanently all of the analogue inputs (voltage and currents) display the values on the LCD and store in memory the measurements. The measured values are the true RMS up to the 10th harmonic with a 0.1% accuracy (nominal conditions). Peak demands with a 15 minute window are also memorised. All measured and calculated values can be displayed on the HMI or transferred locally or remotely upon user request. Event records 75 logic events restored in MiCOM P126 and P127 relays. Events include inputs/outputs, change of status, alarms and contact operations. All events are time stamped to 1ms. Disturbance records Voltage and current waveforms are captured by MiCOM P126 and P127 relays at 1600Hz. Up to 3 seconds of records are stored inside MiCOM relays. Disturbance recording function is triggered either by any of the programmed threshold or by an external input through the local area network. Fault records 5 faults are stored inside the MiCOM relays. Each fault includes: Record number

Fault time Fault date Active setting group Faulted Phase Protection operation Magnitude Fault indicator help the user to identify clearly the fault and to monitor the MiCOM P126 and P127 relay settings.

User interface

Front display and menus All functions including protection, automation, communication, LEDs, inputs and outputs can be programmed and modified using the front panel user interface. The 32 alphanumeric backlit LC display (available in a range of

The menus have a pull-down structure for easy use and quick access to any data. Dedicated Leeds 4 Leeds indicate the status of the MiCOM relays (trip order, alarms, power on, watch dog) Acknowledge of alarm and trip LEDs can be easily performed locally or remotely. Programmable LEDs 4 freely programmable LEDs are provided on all models of the MiCOM P125 range. The user can assign independently to each LED any program function or combination of thresholds. Keypad A seven button tactile keypad on the front panel allows the user easy access to any data in the MiCOM P125 range relays.

Local and Remote Communication

languages) provides the user with key information (faults, measurements, settings etc)

Two communication ports are available; a rear port providing remote communication and a front port providing local communication. Remote communication The remote communications are based on RS485 voltage levels. This port is available for MODBUS, Courier, IEC 60870-5103 and DNP3 protocols. MiCOM relays can transmit to the local monitoring system (e.g. MiCOM S10) or remotely to the SCADA settings, measurements,

alarms, fault events, and disturbance records. The communication parameters (relay address, data rate, parity, etc.) can be programmed using the HMI front port. Local communications The front serial communications port has been designed for use with MiCOM S1, which fully supports functions within the relay by providing the ability to programme the setting offline, extract and view event, disturbance and perform control functions.

The interface MiCOM S1 software interface will be full WindowsTM last version compatible.

Diagnostic

Automatic tests performed including power-on diagnostic and continuous self-monitoring ensure a high degree of reliability.
